The players want a game. They aren't getting paid for a forfeit.

I said it in early October and I'll say it again now.  Put the entire league on a 4 week bye/self isolation and play the Superb Owl in March.

So you'd make the Steelers lose out too? Because if the game isn't played, the Steelers don't get paid either.

the problem is that nobody wants a forfeit. especially the players - from what I've read they won't get paid for that week.

even if they postpone the game and move it to a Week 18, that pushes the entire playoff schedule back a week including the Superb Owl unless they cancel the Pro Bowl. if they need to make up two games - then the Superb Owl would need to be delayed a week which would be a nightmare for the NFL (and NASCAR as well since they scheduled the Daytona 500 that Sunday)

kind of a mess all around. I'm a Steelers fan so I'd take the forfeit, but I'd rather like to see them beat up a healthy Ravens team

that is the tough precedent that would actually cause change.  hit the players in the pocketbook where it matters... the only thing that matters to 99.99% of them .

The Pro Bowl was cancelled weeks ago. They're doing Pro Bowl voting since players do get bonuses for being selected, but the game will be done on Madden.

Forfeit the game. Pay all the players from Goodell's salary.

2020-11-27 2:22:01 PM
The Steelers should still get paid, they didn't do anything wrong. The Ravens players should not get paid, and because of their failed protocol, they now forfeit as well the next 1-3 round draft picks for 4 years. Maybe having a stiff punishment would force teams to follow protocols. Look at the Astro's.... They cheated and it only cost the owner $5million.  Really make it hurt, then it would stop.

I was on the forfeit side of the fence since the Titans fiasco, but now I am firmly on the "let them play with whoever is healthy" side.

Look, this is a pandemic.   Every business is affected and every workplace has people out for a couple weeks.   Testing is simple:   test every player and coach twice in the days before the game and suit up whoever is not infected.   If you have enough to field a team, the play the game.   If your star is out, tough shiat.  It's like any other injury or illness.

This affects all of us and yet all of us are still going to work when we can.

I would only want this to be a wacky rendition of The Replacements if a game occurs. And that they were the only ones to beat the Steelers this regular season. That would be a hoot.

This. Even the Steelers themselves have had an outbreak, which they caught when it affected one coach, 1-2 players, and put several other players on the covid list, including Big Ben. The Steelers didn't push back their game. They seemed to nip it in the bud. Other teams have had similar experiences. What is the difference between the Titans and Raven and all the other teams in the league? More than 50% of the league had at least one case by November 6th, yet only a few teams have had so many cases.

Yeah, let me know how it goes with "Hey, my 2 star developers are out with COVID, can we get a 2-week delay on the Go Live of the software?".

I mean, depending on what it is, maybe you can, but, I used to work decades ago at STATS, Inc., so, somewhere like that, if you have to have code ready for Week 1 of the NFL season, you can't go "Hey NFL, can you delay your season so we can get our code ready?".    The NFL is going to play, YOU have to be ready.

Now, in this case, the NFL is the NFL, so, it is probably closer to the "maybe you can" situation... the NFL isn't depending on anyone else's timeline other than their own... all the networks and such will put on an NFL game at 3am if you tell them to (although they'd probably want a rights fee discount on a 3am game, but, just about anything else goes, they know fans will follow).  They'll run the Super Bowl 3 weeks later at whatever location you tell them to show up to, etc.

Decades ago only being 2 (late 90s), so, at an actual office, LOL.

I'm happy with where everything has landed overall over the last 20 years, but, I did probably make a mistake in how I left after 4-5 years (for a "search engine" startup that went nowhere and ended up being founded by some guy who was fined for running stock email scams in the late 90s).

Next Thursdays game is FOX though... FOX doesn't gain anything by that game moving to a Sunday window where FOX already has games... they lose that prime time window.  So, will be interesting how that gets resolved with FOX from that standpoint.

I had options (that obviously went nowhere), but, did get an actual salary, so, wasn't that bad.

I left STATS right before Dewan sold out to FOX Sports at the time.  That and the fact that I was doing a lot of their work on their AOL content (back when the AOL software was still more important than "web browsing"), once the web basically killed getting paid by the time you made people sit for $6/hr on AOL, that part fizzled out.  Not that I couldn't have stayed around obviously, but, those two things made me "look at other stuff".  But, I was around Dewan, Bill James, others that have gone on big (Darel Morey, etc).   Also plenty of crazy stories about various people, famous and not famous.  Good times.

Other than farking over their tv partners (and really only NBC and ESPN), the league doesn't care if the games are played or not.

The players care because their salary depends on playing, so they want to play.

The vast majority of money coming into the NFL IS tv money. That's why they're considering adding a playoff game to try and recoup potential lost revenue from canceled games.

They already expanded the playoffs and made an extra game. It happened in the last CBA I think. Certainly pre-Covid
