I enjoy Thanksgiving. Aside from covid, I meet up with family and eat tasty food, drink wine, and play euchre.

What should I read to dissuade me from enjoying these things? Why should I ruin something I like? Would the world be improved if we had our feast a week earlier or later? Called it something different?

The origin point of this day is irrelevant to the present. Let people have a day of enjoyment for farks sake. Life is shiatty enough without trying to turn turkey day into a day of mourning.

Trump has had little to do with the highly subsidized American industrial farming system.

Trump blames politicians for not "fixing things" while they were in office all the time. Trump has been in office almost four years, so by his own metrics...

The thing with the Chy-na might have been less than helpful as well.

The agricultural industry didn't turn to sh*t in 4 years.  Clear cutting land. Overuse of water. Overuse of pesticides and herbicides. Disease vectors. Poor working conditions. We've been hearing about this for decades.
The agricultural industry has well-paid lobbyists to persuade (bribe) our politicians.  None of this is getting any better until we experience a collapse of our food supply. And by then, it'll be too late.
I'm just glad I'll be long dead before we experience the negative impacts of our farming industries.

Farms (actually the banks holding ag loans) had to be bailed out the last 3 years because of Trumps failed trade war. Only one of those was during Covid.

OK. I thought that was gonna be about how Trumps tariff war BS screwed America's farmers.

One nice thing about Thanksgiving, it emphasizes a lot of foods that you can source locally almost anywhere in the US.

Getting your holiday produce and meats from a nearby co-op is a good start on reversing some the mess our food supply is in.

My comparison was apt.

If you can't separate Trump's penchant for doing "nobody knows x but me" on common knowledge with his authoritarianism, that's your problem.

I didn't call you a fascist. I didn't say you had bad hair. I didn't say you raped your ex or put kids in cages.

I said you crapped out a runny pile of verbal diarrhea on Thanksgiving and presented it as some kind of informative post.

Reread your op. You are literally telling people they shouldn't enjoy a holiday and that if they do they are ignorant. I disagree. One can fully understand the history of Thanksgiving and still enjoy it without guilt. And fark you right back for trying to be a Debbie downer.

Life is shiatty enough. Let people have a farking day here and there to enjoy it. I consider myself a negative, glass is half empty kind of guy, but jfc.

First of all, Ive never seen anything claiming we didn't coexist for a period.

Second, you miss the point. Feeling like shiat because of shiat your ancestors did is stupid.

I don't have a nationalist bone in my body. Attack americans all you want. What is your nationality, and how much do you mourn what your own ancestors did?

I'm german and polish. Afaict everyone came here after 1800 and before 1930.

I don't give a fark what happened with my ancestors before 1800, or what those countries did after 1930. Or what some of my homo sapien ancestors did to my neanderthal ancestors.

Why should I? I've got 99 problems but what my ancestors may or may not have done isn't one.

If you've got an actual argument to make, farking make it. Or go off somewhere to self flagellate for the sins of your grandparents. You do you. I'm going to eat gravy slathered turkey and play cards.

Yeah, that article read like something a teenage vegan communist would write.

The main thing to remember about US agriculture is that we're probably the most blessed people in the history of the human race when it comes to the ratio arable farmland vs population density.

We built cities on soil that would make farmers in other countries weep in envy.  We grow a ridiculous amount of food in the desert because, aside from the lack of water, California has a perfect climate to sow crops.  The Midwest has better soil and more water, if climate change causes us to shift agriculture back there we'll live with it.

Currently an entry level factory worker makes enough money in a week to feed himself, or herself, for a year if they're willing to cook their own food and live on rice, potatoes and a healthy amount of chicken/pork.  Some of that is due to subsidies... but the underlying fact is that we've got a ridiculous amount of good farmland for our population.

Remember, as a country the US wastes more food than most nations grow.  The meatpacking industry works on razor thin profit margins because they're selling a common commodity in the US, as such every single factory is close to going out of business at all times.

The key is to farm smart, not just cheap.

That requires some government involvement. Difficulty getting farmers to work together is like herding cats.
