Father_Jack: anyone else just find themselves saying "fark the south, fark the south, fark the south..." while reading this?

It's easy to say this, but it isn't only ONE geographic area...

Here in Canada it's real easy to shake our heads and nod sympathetically, but we're just as guilty of racism and discrimination and crimes against humanity.

It's easy to hate what you don't know or fear or want to dominate.

Nah, just a disease that permanently changes their skin color to a nice mahogany.

Those bozos are doing a fair job of killing themselves with Covid, sodium, sugar and stupid people tricks involving beer.

The courageous Black people who did theses deeds are also Southern, as were the most prominent leaders of the Civil Rights Movement.

There are racists and good people everywhere. I'm more bothered by institutions and general sentiment.

while i know there are terrible people in NY too who would love to throw rocks at black people, i cant imagine NYers lining streets throwing rocks or doing what was said in this article.

Do you know the way to Mordor: Whenever I see a section of a powerful article like this, it is like a red rag to a bull for me in terms of Google searching.

"When her eldest daughter was 15, she finally gave her the film Crisis at Central High to watch."

We all need to remember and commemorate the shame of America's racism in exactly the same way that Germany does towards the Holocaust and say like they do- "Never again."

We can all make a good start by watching the full length documentary mentioned in the article. Hopefully it will help us focus on and plan for the massive amount of healing work that Americans (and the world when it comes to global examples of racism) all need to do.

BigGrnEggGriller: I noticed it was a Republican president who sent troops in to guard them against the Democrats who were abusing them.

The Trumpists would have painted Eisenhower as a liberal cuck while at the same time worshipping 4F douchebag failures

You are right. I certainly would like to ask the other so called white students what they remember of that time. And if their views have changed and see people as equal in every way. Never mind the colour of their skin.
To me, most memorable is the speech Martin Luther King gave in Washington in 1967 I think. I am not American and never will be;  Canada is my home but I have read, watched and listened to the struggle people of colour had to fight.  I still remember an opera singer celebrated all over the world but in US she couldn't go to just any hotel. It had to be one for people of colour.

kpaxoid: I feel compelled to highlight that Eisenhower, a Republican president, intervened to do the right thing and calm the situation.

True.  However, it doesn't mean what you are trying to imply.

That happened in 1957.  In 1961, JFK became president, and he advocated for the civil rights act, which was eventually passed under the LBJ administration.  And the parties changed after that, with many switching allegiance on each side.

Yeah, fark them, they should learn how to act like their superiors in the north do.

you mad bro

Yeah I am mad that NYC has very segregated schools.  You should be as well.

From the website:  "Public School Review is a partner site of Boarding School Review, the leading online resource for evaluating private secondary boarding schools, and Private School Review, a unique resource for researching private day schools across the USA. This network of sites aims to help families learn about and make the best pre-college educational choices for their children."

Yeah...pick better sources next time, Cletus.

Just going to leave this here. Schools all across the nation are doing this stuff and no "school choice" is not the answer. We can't just let people shiat in the punchbowl and just get out a new punch bowl.

Is the New York Times a better source for you, Hoss?  You probably think the NYPD treats minorities fairly because they reside in the north.   If the NYT is fake news in your world, here is a link to The Root as well.

You're one of those butt-hurt white guys who considers "afro-centric" schools to be segregation, huh?

This is not a NY issue. It's nation wide. It's telling that after school segregation was outlawed, they just closed the black schools and fired the black teachers. That isn't what anybody wanted.

Kids deserve better, all kids.

Not sure where you got that from. I posted the Root story to show that others think NYC schools are heavily segregated, an idea you dismiss.   You claimed my original source was bogus, so I posted a source from an African American site that claimed the same thing.  Are the people at The Root lying when they say NYC schools are heavily segregated?   If so, maybe you can whitesplain to them why they are wrong.

I wouldn't, because they're not making the point you're desperately trying to make; that regional and socioeconomic "segregation" is the same as ...

So NYers and other northerns practice the "good" kind of segregation.  Whatever helps you sleep at night.

And I have lived in the north my whole life.  I am just aware enough to notice that racial inequity exists in the north while you ignore or excuse away.
