The only way to fight this existential threat to our Republic is though education, education that thoroughly and actively promotes analysis, reflection, extrapolation, and synthesis-and with healthy doses of mathematics and Roman history.

So you want the government to teach children what propaganda they should believe.

/you know someone will make this claim

I know people have floated it before, but we need to mandate that certain sites get certain domain types. Just as the government gets .gov, and universities get .edu, news agencies should get .news, while satire should get .sat

If newsmax want to be satire, then make them lable it as such, because there are WAY too many people fooled into thinking that nonsense is news.

Journalism used to be pretty ok at self policing.

Now you have reporters at the Post wondering why they have to be so diligent with their sources when Fox News and Newsmax can just make shiat up and make millions.

The purpose of modern education is to protect the interests and needs of the system.  The system was sufficient at doing this up until the internet allowed the individuals who were educated to work the assembly line (and later the cash registered) to selectively choose the course of imagined events that suit their psychological needs.

The only way to fight existential threats to the Republic is to destroy the Republic, thereby assuring there can be no Republic to destroy.  Creating the technologies that allowed us to leave the trees was a mistake.  I'll be talking about this in my upcoming masterpiece e-Book, which will also be distributed in the Angelfire format.

There will be hundreds of books written on the topic of why I made this grammatical error.  The greatest minds in all the world will be powerless to decipher my true intention's.

The simple change we need is to disallow the use of the word "News" for these so-called entertainment networks.

I've gone out of my way to explain I have no evidence he molests children and kills them and eats their fresh raw corpses.

They aren't the only news outlet that spreads lies. Almost every news outlet allow themselves to be used by professional liars and then do little to nothing to refute the lies being spread on their dime. It's not like they don't know beforehand who the liars are. It's not like they can't invite on someone who can rebut the lies if the hosts are too afraid or prissy to do it.

"Journalism used to be pretty ok at self policing"

Sports coverage gave them the money to challenge Ted Turner's 24-hr news cycle when advertising based syndication was content to finance "happy" morning programming and "scary, get-to-sleep" evening programming.

The conservative ethos was the 24-hr cycle was driven by sensation and reactionary pulses that made more noise than signal a status-quo had previously controlled.

The progressive ethos was a less frequent cycle (morning and evening) was vulnerable to a range of criticisms of the "establishment"-- collusion between corporate and government agendas, sabotage of grass-roots movement, military actions...there are more.

Since these titans shaped the scheduling of news, reporters have been more curtailed and controlled, corralled into zones. Press zones in Iraq (that Geraldo famously sabotaged) were viewed by most as the lesson learned from VietNam-- embedded reporters served some purposes and not others.

Ironically, they were booted from Fox News for, wait for it, spreading misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nonetheless, we're a nation which has far, FAR higher religiousity than peer nations are. And that's a problem, a big one.

GregInIndy: We're a nation of incorrigible bullshiatters who love to exaggerate & lie about our rectitude & religious propriety.

Religiosity is an extensively covered topic in Sociology. Sociology's prevalent method is survey and statistical analysis of economics directed by theory. Your criticism is a single caveat that's not new.

Religious institutions, or enterprise if you prefer, is protected from taxes because, short of exceptional grifters, charity is a vital activity to society. Second, how its buildings are financed and their maintenance by members who are chosen by wildly variegated traditions (though horribly sexist) is, as well, vital to activity with social value.

These characteristics are not limited to nations. Their similarities and differences are largely left to the enterprises themselves to define. Some Anthropology study is given them.

tl;dr  your caveat isn't informed

Whooole lotta Americans claim they pray all the time and go to church regularly who don't. do. squat. Or if they actually believe themselves devoutly religious, pray at the dinner table on holidays but otherwise live like your standard atheist.

We overstate this crap. We lie about faith. To others AND ourselves.
