Also,
I never really appreciated Richard Sanders' acting (his Wikipedia entry says he had a Fulbright  Scholarship to study Shakespearian acting in England) when I watched WKRP as a teenager. But rewatching his stuff has taught me an appreciation for his skills. The tone of awe and reverence when he says "It was almost as if they were...*organized*" is just beautiful. It gets kind of lost because of the punchline from Gordon Jump.

I would, because the opinion was dragged so far in the Bailey direction that Jennifer is probably underrated at this point.

Plus, I'm not a fan of the whole nerd girl thing anymore after the internet played it out.

So, Jennifer > Bailey.

The whole show really holds up. My wife and I binged through it a few Thanksgivings ago after seeing this clip everywhere. Pretty progressive and even subversive for it's time.

Makes me a little proud I loved it as a little kid.

/I also loved BJ and the The Bear so one step forward one step back I suppose

You don't actually see a single turkey. The whole scene is basically carried by him narrating what's happening. That's what makes it so legendarily funny.

The Andy Samburg movie Hot Rod tries to invoke the same humor with an AM radio dj during the final stunt. WKRP does it much much better

Also, listen to the famous radio narration of the Hindenberg disaster to see where he's getting some of his phrasing from. That adds another layer.

Well, my "Mama Carlson" thing is partly because she had all the money, and partly as a joke. It's similar to the Mary Ann/Ginger debate when someone says "Mrs. Howell"

Yeah, the whole thing is a legendary one man performance that creates a scene and then launches into the madness.  Richard Sanders is a fantastic actor, and never got his due.

That little extra from Les is not always included in clips from this, and it should be.

I have to say that I'm fortunate that I was born at a time when I saw the original Star Wars in the theater, and this episode of WKRP when it originally aired.  If I had had a VCR back then, I think I would have worn out the tape.

First time I saw this episode, I had never even thought of working in radio. Decades later, working towards a diploma for radio broadcasting, I realised how accurate that show was. From this classic moment, to the office politics and personalities.

Don't work the industry any more, but those were some of the better years of my life.

Ever noticed how Les has a white bandage on him somewhere in alsmost every episode. Not sure if there was a story behind that but it's fun tidbit to watch for.
