Yep.  I've been in high schools for museum and Kiwanis reasons, and I have thus interacted with high school students.  They look like children.  Even when they change out of their school clothes and go to Walmart in more revealing clothes, they just look like children wearing revealing clothes.  Maybe Hollywood has screwed up people's expectations by Dawson Casting people in their late 20s as high school students.  But it sounds like people need to stop being attracted to children.

Seriously?

High school is a a crazy mix.  There are students who look like kids and there are students-male and female-that absolutely do NOT look like kids.  Hell, there was a friend of mine who had a receding hairline at 18 who was our go-to for buying beer.

Marcus Aurelius: Gym is a perversion, and needs to be banned by Congress.

School sports too.

Getting kids to be active is a good thing.  Back when I was in school at least it was always done wrong, though--the less good students would spend much of the time sitting around.  And there was no regard for biological differences.  I have always been absolutely shait at running--but I regard throwing a pack on my back and doing 10 miles in the mountains something to do for fun.  It's a different thing, the sports guys are good at a lot of energy for a little while but can't keep it up.

Target Builder: Taking a cynical view here:

The source article says some girls were pulled out of class and told not to wear revealing clothes to school, in accordance with school uniform rules (ubiquitous in the UK and Ireland).

No boys were given the same talk, presumably because revealing clothes are not common among male students because revealing clothes are not part of the cultural landscape and the male uniform doesn't really allow it anyway.

The evidence (so far, I'll happily concede this if more comes out) is that one or more pissed off girls or parents claim they were told their clothes were distracting to male teachers.

I'm happy to change my mind if more comes out, but for now this looks like a case of the annual "testing of limits" around the beginning of the school year and some students/parents going scorched earth with possibly made up claimsupon finding the limit.

I suspect you are right.

I used to train people working with children, and that was my advice too. The issue isn't actually the child concerned as the possibility of rumours from others. "Bernadette was alone in the room with Mr Steklo and she seemed all upset when she came out" is not something you want getting to parents, so when you tell Bernadette that she hasn't make the debating team you make damn sure you are not alone with her.

Two summers ago I worked part time at a private golf course.  One day a memo came out re-enforcing the clubs dress code.  Most private golf clubs don't allow clothing like jeans, cutoffs, sweat/gum cloths or tight and revealing clothing.  Later that day one of the members 14 year old daughter showed up wearing a pair of shorts so tight you could read the date of a coin if she had one in her back pocket.

I could not and did not want to go up to her parents to inform them that their daughter's shorts were too tight and too short.

One would think one of the parents would've noticed. Doesn't matter where they we're going, to the club or just a simple outing to the stores. Tight clothes on a teen leaving the house? Wouldn't happen in my home, that's for sure.

2020-11-25 1:10:17 PM

Stantz: Probably because even though it's 2020 and we're all progressive n'ting, girls are still perceived as things to be judged & rated on appearance.

In high school boys are judged on the cars their parents gave them, how much money they (their parents) have, how "cute" they are, and so on, perceived not as people but the items they can provide or looks. The other option is to be a star in one of the preferred high school sports, but that's faded a bit in the last few decades.

Society is shallow as fark to everyone.

A while back, I checked out some high school photos as part of similar discussion.  it's really true, girls DID NOT look like this 20 years ago.

A lot of it simply has to do with people eating more, but there is also some suggestion that it may have to do with increased levels of hormones and other chemicals. In any case, puberty seems to be happening early for a number of people, and they're physically maturing faster. We're getting quite a few 13 year olds who look 20.

BTW, although I'd never recommend it to anyone for obvious reasons, in high school there were a few of us who got to know some of the adults really well. This whole thing goes both ways.

zepillin: EvilEgg: meanmutton: EvilEgg: Girls, it's your right to dress anyway you like, you just can't control who's attention you attract.

Should the men and boys leer?  Probably not, but they do have the right to. They don't have the right to anything past that.  Not your attention, not your smile, or even not being glared at.

fark that, no. Adult male teachers DO NOT HAVE ANY farkING RIGHT TO LEER AT 12 YEAR OLD GIRLS. That's farking disgusting, offensive and seriously, man, what the fark is wrong with you?

Of course they shouldn't.  But people have the right to do disgusting offensive things.

How do you legislate a leer versus a look?

I think it has to do with the length of time

I seem to recall Australia having a 6 second limit to how long you could oggle someone before it came became harassment

that was way back in the day I don't know if that's still a thing

You never met Allison from the 7th grade. (1980 or so) Way back when, the school made the girls wear these really really tight yellow shirts...I mean really tight...

My middle daughter had a friend that went from flat to, ahem, "blessed" over a summer. She was actually pretty embarrassed about it. I mean going from most of the teen boys ignoring her ~100lbs with "mosquito bites" body to staring at her ~115lbs with DD's body was quite a shock for a 15yo. The ultimate laugh was my daughter getting pissed off when she walked in on that friend having naked sexy time. Freaked the heck out, and made us sit her down for a bit of a chat. "Yes, we know it's not ideal your friend decided jumping in bed with your brother would be fun but we can't make him not date her or vice versa." Funny thing being the reason she jumped him, apparently, was because he didn't turn into a gibbering idiot when she suddenly grew boobs.

This brings up a question that I have never thought about before.

We al know that fast growing teenage boys can eat their parents out of house and home with their all-consuming appetites.

If a particular young girl has a fast episode of breast growing like you describe, do they too develop an uncontrollable bout of hunger while this is going on and have trouble stopping themselves from eating?

It seems to make sense that this would be the case.

I remember being in elementary school in the 70's and we had to do the presidential fitness tests in gym class.

and then once while high on LSD in high school,  we played the why game.

that's when you ask a question and keep answering why to it...the question we started with was..

"why do we have to go to gym class"

I think the final answer had something to do with money.

I don't know why people keep wanting to pretend that this is so complicated. This Disney Channel isn't a trillion dollar company because nobody wants to fark teenagers.

It is perfectly normal for a heterosexual male to find post-pubescent females sexually attractive. If you found those girls hot when you were 17, why wouldn't you expect a 40 year old to? The age of consent is a standard that society imposed because as a general rule, teenagers don't have the emotional maturity or the life experience to make smart decisions for themselves regarding sexuality. You get a pass when you yourself are underage because kids are dumb and its unfair to apply responsibility to one dumb kid and not the other.

As an adult man, it is perfectly healthy and normal to find young women sexually attractive. Even ones under the artificially imposed cutoff of 18. You just don't farking act on it. You instead protect vulnerable women in that situation.

Having the ability to impose your will on people, and making a conscious decision not to, is the keystone of being a man.
