"Free" doesn't exist when it comes to goods and services.

You could say that it is being paid for with taxes, but that would require a balanced budget.

https://www.ifs.org.uk/publications/14982

This is effectively being paid for with borrowed funds that will have to be paid back. With interest.

"Free" should be banned when it comes to government expenditures. It's not farking free.

So no. Go worry about those things first.

Well of they're going to go down that road.

Make condoms free so people would use them more.
Make gyms free so we can stay a healthy weight and not overburden the health system with obesity related diseases
Make eye glasses/contacts/corrective surgery free
Make dental care free because so many various conditions are related to oral hygiene plus it affects ones own mental health

Also, since they're now covered for free will the government bite the bullet if someone dies from Toxic Shock becuase (insert reason why the gov has to pay multi millions in liability) because they had x brand instead of y brand.

Condoms are already free there - you can get them for free at doctor's offices, pharmacies, and schools.

Condoms are already free. TFA even says so. Gyms are hugely subsidised in the UK with council run sports centres, eye tests, glasses and dental also hugely subsidised. Scotland even cheaper than England, because they get a big subsidy from England to fund it.

/Also glad to see TFA mentioned the EU law that forced us to charge VAT (sales tax) on tampons. After Brexit we can scrap that tax.

Totally agree on eyeglasses. You want your people seeing well not just so they will be productive workers but so they don't get in traffic accidents, fall and hurt themselves, etc.

BTW, anyone out there who needs glasses at reasonable prices, you need to be buying them online. You can get titanium frames, transitions lenses, etc, for under half of what the optometrist charges for fugly basic plastic birth control glasses. All you need is your prescription, which the optometrist can't keep secret from you, and the frame size you want (printed on the inside of the arms of your current glasses). Glasses are not expensive to make.

I usually buy those things in massive quantities once every five years or so and it works out to probably less than a penny a day. I started shaving my head about 15 years ago and so I only use a small amount of shampoo.

I'd be fine with giving poor people free soap and shampoo if they had access to a shower where they could use it. Free toothpaste? Sure...it's cheap and prevents disease from spreading. We can buy this stuff in massive bulk quantities - not necessarily from Ulta, mind you...but maybe Dollar Tree quality.

The ROI on this is massive. Less orphaned kids due to free condoms, less whatever kind of shiat due to better hygiene, less chance of some kind of awful pandemic spreading through the homeless population and killing us all...yes, let's do it. And it's like, what... $25 per person per year? Sounds great.

Sensible basics help everyone. There is a balance, societies can go too far, but, at least in the US, we aren't anywhere near too far. I wish the people that slam giving a few dollars worth of basic health items to those that need it would also slam giving hundreds of billions in subsidies to corporations that don't. Do the math and you will see what costs us more and what gives a better ROI really easily.

Unfortunately no. The number of people in Scotland who rely on food banks has been growing. Homelessness still exists. Fortunately, providing for the public good isn't a zero sum game. Each step forward brings the government more in line with the purpose of protecting the poorest, the weakest and the most vulnerable members of society.

This isn't the last step towards a perfect society and it's not claimed to be. It's one of many initiatives that make it better.

That's interesting. Because I was thinking "If the battlecry is feminine hygiene products should be free because it is a basic necessity, shouldn't that apply to food first?"
