Having seen a few Facebook walls in my time, yes, this is about right. Facebook is more fun when you are pixilated.

I haven't used it in seven weeks.  I am totally missing all the updates on people's meals, vacations, and kids doing schoolwork from home.

Boomer here (although I prefer Gen Jones). I pare my friends down regularly, use snooze/unfollow, and, when possible, block pages that some of my weirder friends post up so I don't have to see the stuff they post from them.  Aside from personal posts from actual friends, my feed is now pretty much instant pot recipes, gym memes, ads for fitness stuff, and news from the sources I follow.  It's been much more enjoyable.

I'm 59, and I only use FB to catch up with friends and family. I've never gotten any of this right-wing nonsense.in my feed. If you're getting propaganda from Turning Point, it's because you "liked" them at some point. That's on you.

So... do you think the Fark forum is just your private swimming pool? Welcome to social media, my friend...

When I check FB the routine is to scroll through my feed and block the source of any share. Don't care what it is or where it's from, if it's a share it gets blocked. Initially it took a lot of time but these days I only see actual posts from friends and that's about it.

FB would be completely gone from my life if not for my child's school using it for communications.

I gave up on Facebook shortly before I married Mrs. F. Suffice to say it contributed to escalation of quarrels that irreparably damaged my relationship with the rest of the family.

A foretaste of what was to come, I suppose. And we didn't have the excuse of interference from Russian spies.

capn' fun: [Fark user image 410x512]

There is a sizeable subset of Boomers who came of age at the beginning of the "digital revolution".
Our VCRs had the correct time. We were able to transition from Vinyl to Cassette to CD to MP3 to streaming without a glitch. We managed to work our way through digitized video as well, fully embracing DVD including DVD authoring. And when BluRay hit the market we were all in.

I was born in 59 and started my career in tech in 1980. I've been working in STEM in one fashion or another since then. There are many who do fit that stereotype, sure...but a lot of us are that gullible or ignorant...

True story here though, it's my wife and not me...

Wifely unit was into photography and I bought her a new Canon EOS rebel digital SLR, this was around 2007ish
and supplemented that with a stack of CDs for backup up that camera and archiving the images.

She managed to handle that part ok. But when it came to labeling the disc she kind of lost her way...

She would scratch the CD foil with a date and time for the photos.

ugh...

Same here and Boomer too. I weed out folks that are just putting up non-factual political stuff. I keep a few Trumpers around just for fun but I don't have any of the nonsense this article is describing. You gotta weed the garden occasionally.

As I keep pointing out in these discussions, people who aren't already racist shiatheads don't fall for nazi propaganda. So, basically, if their feeds look like that it's their own damn fault for continuing to subscribe to this bullshiat, same as Fox 'News' watchers are 100% at fault for not changing the channel or turning off the farking tv.

I'm always left wondering who is seeing and/or sharing all this stuff.  I very occasionally see some stupid Trump meme from the conservative friends or family members I haven't ditched, but even those have gone almost completely silent since the election.  My entire feed is just games, music, and football, with the rare family picture or snarky comment from friends.

Seems like you have to be a very active and willing participant to get flooded with all the MAGA derp that all these people seem to be.

I know it's an overused meme at this point but

Facebook, and to a lesser extent, twitter, youtube and other social media have done to our boomer parents what they were afraid what video games would do to us (millenials). Facebook has completely poisoned their minds, and is just as effective, if not more effective, at taking people who once had fairly well-balanced worldviews with principles and scruples, and turned them into hyper-partisan hacks who are willing to scorch the earth if they think a single liberal will be offended by it.

I'm a big proponent of free speech, and my blood curdles at any idea of curtailing it, but a small sliver of me feels like the nation, and indeed the planet, would be much better off without Facebook radicalizing the boomers and assorted other Olds. Maybe we'd be better off without any social media that's powered by the algorithm that constantly force-feeds the elderly ever-more radicalizing far-right ideas.

I never visit the page I set up around when my kid was born 17 years ago.

I just checked it out today, and despite having a bunch of contacts from a very red part of the country, no pro Trump stuff at all.  Just one or two anti-trump things.

Still not interested in spending any time there, though.

In 2016 I checked out Youtube's and Facebook's numbers on me. Youtube had me categorized as "far right" and Facebook had me categorized as "far left." It's not nearly as cut and dry as you think it is.

The internet is the USA's big vehicale for colonialism. Facebook and various other platforms also shows young people in Canada Aemrican medical ads which totally fark up their perception of what our health care system is. And university. based on the ads and stories they saw on social media, only 5 in a tutorial of 25 of my sudents last year knew that our university was a public institution. When I asked them a lot of questions it became clear that social media only ever showed them debates about college and debt from the USA, and most of them had seen nothing about how the system functions in Canada. And, whatever they learned in high school, they thought was just 'wishful thinking" because they thought what social media showed them (the USA)  was the reality, because it was labeled as "news".

There have been other stories over the years about how their algorithm skews harder towards conspiratorial nonsense and things that get scared boomers angry because they engage more with that kind of stuff than anything else. YouTube does this too. Watch one video of silly game glitches from the wrong channel and it's months of them suggesting Jordan Peterson talks and neckbeards screaming about feminism in Star Wars in front of their bookcase full of manga and barely-clothed waifu figurines.

I don't know. I deleted my old Facebook, but created a new account when my partner passed away a couple years ago so I could have her pictures. When I got back on, I just added a few coworkers and friends and I kept getting Trump related stuff and I think it's because the only data they had on my account was who I was friends with and most of the people I know are Republican. I didn't want to get into politics on Facebook, but I started liking and adding Democratic groups just so Facebook would get the hint to stop sending me MAGA shiat.

How to lessen Facebook's grip on you:

Always use the chronological timeline. Make that your go-to link for FB. Never just click the Facebook logo, because it'll go back to their curated mode, and as we now know, their curation is not to be trusted, because it's designed to keep you doomscrolling.

Someone's making your blood pressure rise? Block 'em, especially if they're someone you don't know from Adam. You didn't know them in real life, you don't need to know 'em on FB. "Oh, but you want to hear differing opinions..."...sure, I do in real life. But I don't need puppet heads spouting puppet drivel, even when they don't know they're puppet heads.

If I debunk your meme and you realize you got played, you stay "friends"; if not, bye, especially if you can't cite sources. I'll note I've lost a lot more right-wing acquaintances this way.

2020-11-24 5:21:03 PM
I have the opposite problem most people here do: as a humanities academic who follows colleagues on Twitter, it took months of muting to get my feed to be about something other than mansplaining, white fragility, "decolonizing your syllabus," microagressions . . . and the latest self-righteous declarations about how one or more of these terms is "problematic" and we should move on to a better term that will also be "problematic" in 2-3 weeks.

Not that I'm opposed to any of these things in principle, but the internal politics of the social justice crowd gets farking tedious.
