I remember last year when the Farkiverse opined Peloton was reaching peak sales because there wouldn't be enough people willing to blow big bucks. Looks like there are.

How were we supposed to know the lengths they would go to to keep people shut inside, away form the gym?  Not many companies will engineer a pandemic to boost sales.  That takes real vision.

There are lots of alternatives that work with the Peloton app. I know a few people with Pelotons and they always say the classes are the best part, well you can get them on the app and use a bunch of other spin bikes. The only thing missing is the "leaderboards", so I guess if you're a super competitive type, that'll suck.

Buy a bowflex or Schwinn, same quality and doesn't marry you to the Peloton app (which is a really good app).

Try getting a set of ironmaster dumbells.  For months they have been sold out, with a small amount of stock coming in every 6 weeks or so.  you sign up for a lottery on their website where if you get drawn, you can order a set.  I bet all of these companies are kicking themselves for not having an easier distribution model after this year.

The Peloton bike is not a great bike. You are much better off getting a better spin bike and getting the Peloton app. The app is actually cheaper if you don't have their bike. You can get a better bike cheaper.
Their classes aren't that great. My wife is a spin instructor and is consistently disappointed by their instructors.

BRB, programming Peleton-like porn app where you have VR sex on branded couches that the porn stars are using when they film. The couch could be free but you have to subscribe for the disposable plastic sheeting.

I looked into one when a coworker raved about it. Bike is marked up 200-300%, and you are supposed to get a subscription for $39 a month. Norditrak was less than half the cost. You can find the bike Peloton rebrands for $600-900. At least it looks +90% the same. Norditrak ones are very similar. The difference between the various bikes I looked at was the screen and maybe accessories. My neighbor got a Peloton earlier this year. He offered to let me try it out, but I don't have cycling shoes right now.

Has anyone checked craigslist? There's probably a good number of them out there that are barely used.

2020-11-24 11:16:24 AM
A lot of rich people never bothered to learn the servant's real names.

They just called them "Jeames", "John Henry", "Abigail" and so forth, only having to remember one name. There were regional variations in the UK. Abigail, for example, was a maid in the region of Bath, England. "John Henry" was a generic footman almost anywhere.

Mind you, even the Milords and Miladies almost always had one of four or five names. Richard, William, John, and George, the names of the English Kings, were most common.

In Iceland and Denmark, four male first names are still pre-dominant, and where patronyms (Son of Niel) are still used, it gets confusing. The phone books in Iceland are by first name because about 75% of the population have the same four surnames.

Knowing the names of your servants was typical of the very old rich with family retainers. People who hired their servants or got them through agencies never bothered because it wasn't worth the effort.

"As good cooks go, she went." A classic line from P.G. Wodehouse.

I don't think I would trust myself on a bike or a scooter but I would love to have one if parking weren't such a problem, and then there's theft, of course. They have those new electric scooters lying around all over the place. Assholes. They should be asking what they'd get for a car. About half off the moment it is driven off the lot unless it is a good car like a Mercedes, well-maintained, in which case it might be as much as 90% of sticker price.

My Father was nobody's sucker. He cold negotiate a good price on a car and get any of the "extras" included that a sensible man might want. A third below asking price is not bad at all, but I always say that less than 75% is not really a sale, just a typical built-in mark down on last year's clothes.

Yeah this is true and aggravating. Some years ago I was looking for a mini-fridge that I could use to turn into a kegerator. Figured I could get one someone wanted to get rid of for $50 or so and I didn't care what it looked like. I ended up just buying a new one at home depot cause it was cheaper than any that I found on craigslist.

I guess a lot of people just don't understand the concept of depreciation.

Just here to point out that in my fair home country, the word "peloton" pronounced in French has bicycling connotations - but in Danish, it's almost exclusively used as the second part of "eksekutionspeloton" - and yes, that means "firing squad".

This could actually work for guys.  The better you do while bicycling, the larger her picture is on screen.  Soon the guys using the bike have to make a choice to either pedal faster/longer and use higher resistance, or get a bigger TV to watch her on.

Add in a bit of graphical editing so you can set up your custom bicycle ride (15 minutes, half hour, full hour, etc), the Peloton provides feedback to the app to let the app know how good you are doing (resistance vs endurance), and it could motivate a few people.

On the corporate recording side, it would have the model filmed from a variety of distances while bicycling.  The setup and cooldown videos of her challenging and congratulating the rider are spliced onto the front and end of a series of clips showing her bicycling (and the clips would be slightly different lengths to make the splicing less obvious), with a warm room so the sweat/glow looks authentic.

Various outfits for the model would allow for several weeks before her outfits start to repeat. Combine that with green-screen backgrounds to simulate different outdoor areas.

I do not own a peloton bike but their build quality is far superior to the bikes that are half the cost. Even when they are near the same price they really are outstanding. To get a better bike you will pay for it, the NordicTrack that is equivalent costs the same, same with the Keiser bike. The $39 a month is similar to other companies like iFit.

Noted. I was giving a coworker some advice on getting a bike a couple of months ago. Started looking around at the regular sites and wow I had no idea that bored quarantiners were buying up all the bikes.

About the only thing I have seen recently are high end bikes. Of course those are great bikes but would be a waste of money for beginners or casual neighborhood riders.

Which reminds me. I have an old mountain bike that would be great for a casual rider. I need to tune it up and see what I can get for it.

Jess King, my favorite instructor, because she's got so much....talent.

Just be glad she's available on your screen, and not out on her huge . . .  tracts of land.

Mycroft_Holmes_IV: I ordered my future coat rack (recumbent exercise bike) off Amazon last week and they delivered it two days later.  No fancy membership or apps involved.  Just plopped down in front of the TV.

Mostly it's an attempt to not completely atrophy by spring.

That's kind of how we set up - though we started in the beforetime. So there was plenty of inventory to get good prices on both the exercise gear and A/V system that suited us and the space available. I like outdoor biking too, but it's never been the same kind of exercise as the recumbent (or its current replacement, a rowing machine).

Most of my TV time is while I exercise now.

orbister: FTFA, they've had to drop the price.

I believe that's because they introduced a new more expensive version.  The lower price one is the older model.

Tonto's Expanding Headband: Get a real bike. Get a set of rollers. Or if you are a klutz, get a bike trainer.

Ride indoors as needed. Take bike outside and ride more.

If you need a someone running a spin class to get you to exercise, you don't really want to exercise.

Or how about we just let people exercise however they like if it actually gets them to exercise?  shiat, I like outdoor riding too, but you'd think Peloton was out there farking some poster's wives with the reaction around here.  There's a ton of people out there who "don't want to exercise."  It's kind of a normal feeling.  But if a $2K bike gets them to actually do it, then who cares?

Oh, and has anyone made the coat rack joke yet?

iron_city_ap: Ordered a couch in August. Still waiting, and they are saying MAYBE by mid December instead of the original mid-October estimate.

I ordered one in March, got it in September.

As a practical matter, high intensity workouts cannot be done outside unless you have some empty trails around.  Puttering around at 150 Watts for a few hours?  Sure, but that's only one kind of workout.  Intervals or tabatas or anything over about 20 MPH is just begging for an accident on a busy trail, though, especially if you're sharing with pedestrians.

Random Anonymous Blackmail: amb: I looked into one when a coworker raved about it.

They have done a hell of a job branding the thing as a premium piece of equipment.
Buy a real bike, no need for super high end... streets are still open.

For less than the cost of peleton you can get a really nice road bike, a good indoor trainer, and a subscription to Zwift or some other VR service.  And you have a bike you can actually ride places when you're not inside.

WhackingDay: There are lots of alternatives that work with the Peloton app. I know a few people with Pelotons and they always say the classes are the best part, well you can get them on the app and use a bunch of other spin bikes. The only thing missing is the "leaderboards", so I guess if you're a super competitive type, that'll suck.

What specifically about the bikes allows leaderboards?  Is it a watt meter or something more specific to pelotón?  O have a smart trainers with watt meter and would.live to just try out a couple classes for LULZ and to see what everybody is talking about.

brantgoose: Drews idea of buying one second hand is probably a good idea, given the present conjuncture. I saw an exercise bike in the doorway of a second hand store on my way by just yesterday, so somebody must be selling them.

I've been curious about pelotón for a while (bought some stock,so was doing a bit of research).

People who buy them tend it use them.  I don't see many of them on Craigslist at least around here.

Of the coworkers what have bought them.over the years, only one doesn't use it regularly anymore but his daughter has started to use it nearly daily.

I'm not sure how much they'll continue to improve with the pandemic ending, but they grew a lot long before the pandemic started.

Yup.  Buy a real bike to ride outside and you can get a smart trainer to mount it on to for 500-1200 dollars, depending on how fancy you want to get.  Toucan then get a zwift or Rouvy subscription for about ten dollars a month and have a kick-ass time doing VR riding.

No hot instructors,if that's what motivates you, but still quite a bit of fun for me.

brantgoose: Red Shirt Blues: abhorrent1: Has anyone checked craigslist? There's probably a good number of them out there that are barely used.

Yes, but the sellers want pretty much what they paid for it.

Assholes. They should be asking what they'd get for a car. About half off the moment it is driven off the lot unless it is a good car like a Mercedes, well-maintained, in which case it might be as much as 90% of sticker price.

Some markets vary.  I was looking for a used higher end mountain bike in the Portland area and the prices were crazy.  Looked in Austin and they were about 30 percent less for comparable products.  May still buy something over there when I visit my brother and bring it back with me.  It's usually about 100 bucks to bring it on the airplane unless you fly southwest.  They just charge it as luggage!

Erik_Emune: Just here to point out that in my fair home country, the word "peloton" pronounced in French has bicycling connotations - but in Danish, it's almost exclusively used as the second part of "eksekutionspeloton" - and yes, that means "firing squad".

In northern Mexico, it used to be some guy that was really lazy and a moocher had heavy balls.  So a pelotón was a la y moocher guy.  Not sure if it's still used much.

Some people don't like to exercise but know they have to.

There's plenty of videos on youtube as well for you to train by yourself with rollers or a trainer.

If you want to be more.interactive a smart trainer starts around 500.  I've seen THOSE on Craigslist for 350 in good shape.  Usually being sold by people who went with the direct drive model and outgrew their entry level trainer.

brantgoose: To be honest, I thought Pelaton was some kind of card or gambling game.

It sounds French, like chemin de fer.

Pelotón is a term for the main group of riders bunch together in a cycling race.  Because people switch out at the front, the people behind can save energy by drafting, so the pelotón can frequently go faster than an individual or small group of riders (like a breakaway) can.

You ride better with the peloton.  It's a good name for a bike whose selling point is allowing you to train at home with a bunch of other people.  Like a pelotón, so to speak.

Alternative:. Get yourself a shiatty bike.for the trainer.

I have a 50 dollar garage sale bike.  The seat tube in the frame is damaged and may not be rideable in the road.  But it's fine for the trainer.  Just put a decent drivetrain in it (chains pedals and derailleurs) and you're good to go.

Scout craigslist for some beater 20 year old bike.  Concentrate on it fitting you well.  Look for a decent drivetrain and a true rear wheel.  You'll need to buy a trainer tire unless you managed to snag a cheap direct drive trainer (they're pricey).

I basically use that in the trainer and ride my real bike outside.  Less hassle mounting and unmounting trainer tire and skewer from my bike every time I ride inside or outside.

FTFA, they've had to drop the price.

They dropped the price on the older model because they have a new model out.

Find a neighborhood with a decent hill and do repeats on it.  I freaking crank out the watts on one hill near my house and barely break 10mph.  And it's a quiet neighborhood street, so no traffic and no pedestrians to run over.

Would love to go to a velodrome, but I'm a bit intimidated.

I'm one of the "crazies" that actually owns a Peloton. I can't even really describe its appeal. I've always been good about exercising on a daily basis, and I made fun of my friend with a Peloton...until I tried one. Did a 45 minute ride with Emma Lovewell on a hotel bike at a conference and something just clicked. The community and built-in competition were immediately addictive. I ordered one the day I got back from the conference and haven't looked back.

Plus Denis Morton and Ben Alldis are VERY easy on the eyes. I'd bike through mud for those guys...RAWR.

Ok advice pre pandemic, although I wouldn't recommend it to someone new who doesn't know enough about bikes  but, those deals don't exist right now and parts are at a premium too.

Maybe.  We have a community bike shop around here that still has stock good enough for that.  They get abandoned bikes from the police as well as donated bikes.  Remember, you're looking at something that could be unrideable, so might not be snatched up yet.
