That gets a vote just for the headline.

Sorry, nothing will top the original headline. If there's ever a "Fark Hall of Fame" that will likely be at the top.

Aww, the Dink.  He beat my mayor Ed Koch (Beastie Boys must have hated him).

He was the worst mayor ever and I ain't kidding. Even worse than Mayor 911.
But now we have DeBlasio who is giving Dinkins a run for his money.
Bloomberg was okay I guess.

No real sane person wants the job. The people that do and are sane, generally don't survive the experience with their sanity intact. Someone once told me that New York City politics is more akin to that of trying to herd schizophrenic cats with bad eyesight. The vestiges of the old firehouse gangs still exist and the mobsters control enough of the local economies to steer attention away from themselves. Everyone still has their hands out and they aren't particularly polite about it.

Dinkins fired Braun for suggesting everybody wear name tags.  Braun ended up in the nuthouse and when he came out he was a completely different person.  I'm sure he is happy Dinkins is gone.

Here in St. Louis, they recently got their first ever woman mayor.  She just announced that she's not going to run for reelection.. too much crap lately..  so the Democratic primary field is starting to grow.

Lindsay was worse. Beame was worse - all the failures PLUS gave Trump a $400m tax break that didn't expire until a few years ago. Koch? If his people knew how to fix a simple skating rink we'd never know Trump's name. Giuliani had one good term and spent the second term squawking about obscenity the Brooklyn Museum like some old church lady.

Among all that, Dinkins was a gullible mediocrity.

While I'd much rather have a progressive mayor ( as and aside fark NYC Dems for letting bloomberg run three times)  I don't get the deblasio hate.

He's basically just been a placeholder for keeping the status quo.  He hasn't been terrible or amazing.  He the meh-yor.  He's done the bare minimum.  And sometimes he mostly shows up.

He's the mayor who took Lloyd Braun's advice to require that all New Yorkers wear name tags right? But he also helped George Costanza get that doctors appointment.

I heard his son died a few days ago, so he's lost his wife, then daughter and now his son, so no not the original.

He beat Koch in the primary, at the time we had a incident where the cops killed some black dude in suscpious circumstances and that was considered to have cost Koch the primary, had he won, he might have gotten a 4th term as NYC mayor but he would have run against Rudy Guiliani.  Dinkins won and then later beat Rudy.  Rudy would then campaign for the next 4 years against Dinkins during which at one point he would lead a police riot on the steps of city hall because the cops didn't like having a black man as mayor and also felt he didn't kiss their asses enough..  Rudy ran again and won the second time, the first of two terms.

And I've said this many times, he's mayor because he's been lucky enough to run against piss poor candidates. In the last race, if you ask most people who he was running against, they couldn't tell you.  Without looking it up I couldn't tell you who he fist ran against.

You're mostly right, except the part about the mob, who has less control than they did in the past.

The problem with Dinkins was that he was a little too nice in his mayoralty which allowed people like Giuliani to succeed him. He also set the stage for the drop in crime by adding more cops, which Giuliani took credit for. That Dinkins still had some sense of sanity after being mayor is a big deal.

It's also no surprise that once you become mayor of NYC, that's usually the end of your career in politics.

I think that's true in general - people who should be in those positions REALLY don't want to be and are smart enough to stay away.  We asked my dad why he never ran for office because he's by far the smartest person I'll ever meet (and I'm in academia) and that was his answer.

And I can imagine that being true x a million in NYC for just the reasons you mentioned.  I just thought maybe the willingness to sacrifice sanity would be more equal opportunity haha
