I time out on the sports categories.

Thankfully they're only about 10%

There was a NASCAR category recently.

Man, did they blow that one. Simple shiat like "Daytona 500" or "Richard Petty".

I just figure sports categories are killers because Jeopardy attracts nerds, but the article says otherwise.

Probably how I feel when someone flubs a music or movie question but given the pressure they're under, I try not to judge.

My favourite is when they can't name the provinces of Canada, let alone major cities.

non-stem nerds.  Science and Math categories tend to just be history questions of famous contributors.

I consider myself a smart person, but other than an educated guess at 4-5 questions per round, I am clueless on most questions.  If Alex mentions a river in South America, it had better be the amazon, because that is the only river I know.  Otherwise my experience feels like this:

Alex: Authors for $100 - He wrote this story while sipping tea on the ship Regarndino while it was in port near a body of water.

Me: fark if I know...is PTI re-airing yet on ESPN Ocho?

I got 3 of the 5, I just flubbed the first one because I was thinking 'QB Sneak', rather than looking for the clue in how it was phrased. And I didn't know the 'Purple People Eaters' one, but I don't really watch football outside of watching the Steelers.

Well, see, he disappeared....that summer. He was on a fishing trip.

The last goal he ever score won the Leafs the Cup.

They didn't win another until 1962 -- the year he was discovered.

I got this from a hockey card I kept tucked under my Fifty Mission Cap.

What about them fumbling easy science questions?

I mean, it's not like the two categories aren't completely and totally equal and valid and worth knowing.

The sensible explanation is probably this:  Sports are games. Why would I care, bother learning about, who won (or played, or lost, or farked up, or was a star in) a game or series of games someone else played?

does this apply to dance competitions, music competitions, dance performances, movies, improv or jam sessions?

Sports are entertainment just like all of the above.  Why should we care what actor played a part...hmm, played as if it were a game.

Arguably, a lot of trivia is just that, trivia.

Why would I care, bother learning about a song someone else played?

Legally or illegally? The first forward pass attempts were made in the late 19th century although the rules weren't changed to actually allow it until the early 1900s.

9/10 on the hockey/basketball quiz.  I don't follow sports, but the names sounded familiar.  And the goalie nicknamed 'Cujo'?  Only choice that made sense was Curtis Joseph or whatever his name is.  You have to think around your lack of knowledge.

I missed the first one for the same reason, but then I thought "Give and Go"?....wrong sport.  The Purple People Eaters one goes back to the '70s, when the Vikings were still to be feared, unless it was the Super Bowl

No but if you know the song and you could see in the clue that MN has Purple as the color, it may have been a way to get to the answer.
