Gavin Newsom thinks he's going to be elected President someday. [NARRATOR: "That will never happen."]  So much so, in fact, that he would've probably been just as happy to see Trump win this year so that he could run in 2024 with no Dem incumbent President, so now he knows he would probably have to wait until 2028 to run (and lose).  He will want to appoint someone to Harris's seat who he does not see as potential competition then. It would also be nice if he could appoint someone who would be good at being a Senator, but that's not really part of the equation for him or any other California politician.

Given that, the best choice would be Ted Lieu. He would be a great Senator, and because he was born in Taiwan he's ineligible to run for President. Of course, that will not happen because he's not female enough or dark-skinned enough to check enough of the "diversity" boxes, but he would be a good pick for Gavin.

A better pick would be Katie Porter, but Gavin would view her as potential competition, and she checks only one "diversity" box.

I'm not usually extremely keen on eliminating candidates because they don't fit a particular gender/ethnicity criterion...but California is 40% Latin. I think that population deserves representation.

Ideally, get Feinstein to retire so he can fill both seats and make everyone happy.

Maxine Waters could burn more Republicans in a few days than anyone else could in a full term.  I like this idea.

Because there is precisely one best qualified person for the job. There is an objective measurement and only one person has the highest score.

Funny you mention that a person's skin color should not prevent them from getting the job, yet for well over 100 years in CA, that person's skin color (and number of testicles he has between his legs) were the first requirement to being considered for the job. Now, once we've finally had some female and non-white representation, we get the "oh, we should not be using skin color or gender..." fark off.

So that's a no to anyone but a black woman. So no Asian, Latinx, Native American, Caucasian, et al., people need apply even if they're gay or transgender. Good to know the seat is strictly for a black woman. No Indian (dot) Americans for the seat allowed.

My state has had two female senators for decades  I think we've proven that there's not a glass ceiling where that's concerned. It's ok to appoint someone male this time.

Yeah, I don't have an opinion on Padilla himself, but picking the son of Mexican immigrants seems a good choice.

California hasn't had a male senator since January 1993.  I think it would.be fine to pick a male.

Maybe we should focus on getting.a female governor.

He's 83, so unfortunately his health may not permit it. A decade ago, (in Newsome's shoes) I'd have named him w/o question as he has no higher ambitions and has done wonders for Asian and gay rights.


Japanese 83 is the Caucasian 55, IMHO.

Gavin may get a second term as gov but I doubt he has the traction for anything beyond that. He had a shot at being a bold leader during the pandemic and went mushy. Unlike Cuomo he has not been able to sell and stick to tough measures.

The big problem with Porter is she reps Irvine. Pull her out and you risk the seat going Republican. Libby Schaaf and Xavier Becerra keep coming up. Becerra would be the party pick, if not selected for AG, since he shores up the CA Latino base.

Of course not!!! Governor Newsom can fill that seat with whomever he gets pressured into by the donors... maybe if he's lucky he can get a free dinner out of it somewhere.
