For 7 more days, you are required to check your temperature every morning (they actually gift you a thermometer)

Sounds like a Deep State plot to prop up the thermometer industry

2020-11-22 3:40:41 AM
But they did have 7 deaths.

The US population equivalent would have been 91, if my math is close.

Brownie Taiwan, you're doing a heckuva job

Too late now, but in February we should have instituted a 14-day quarantine for ANY international arrivals at the airports. Every international airport has at least 2, 3, or more hotels nearby---make them quarantine hotels and put EVERYONE getting off a flight into them for 2 weeks--NO EXCEPTIONS.

Close the borders shortly after that too.

/This is why national leadership is so important and why we failed so hard in the US.

That's how you do it.

Taiwan is an island with no borders.  The US has two giant borders and a whole lot of people that have hissy fits whenever we try to actually secure them.  I can only imagine the cries of racism if we instituted mandatory GPS tracking of everyone that entered the country.  Hell, when Trump tried to stop flights from the country this virus originated in they called him a racist for it.

everyone has been living their lives freely since February

Sure, for definitions of the word 'freely' that don't include mandatory quarantine and compulsory purchases.

Trump said something mean about China so doing anything about international travel was racism.

What also helps is to believe  nothing China says. A tactic that is pretty much shared by all countries around there. "You say it is harmless? We'll see in a few months what happened to others. We're doing prevantative measures".

Well, there's a bunch of disengenuos crap.

First up, no one suggested closing either land border to try and get a hold of the virus. Second, there's no proposal for GPS tracking in the tweet thread, it was a mandatory 14 day quarantine for new arrivals, with what sounded like bluetooth contact tracing once you're out. GPS isn't really the tool for that job.

As to Trump's ban on arrivals from China - it may still be in effect, and still as ineffective as it was when he proposed it. It only applied to non-US nationals, except for non-US nationals who had relatives in the US. So a large number of people from Wuhan were able to travel to the US.
I'm not suggesting the US should have barred its citizens from entering the country, but requiring a 14 day quarantine (in a home or in a hotel or whatever) may have saved a lot of grief.

An effective control on anyone entering the US (as opposed to those who were targeted) would have gone a long way to refute any accusations of racial (or otherwise) motivation in that policy.

I didnt call Trump a racist for that.

He is a racist, of course but that move was purely stupid and ineffective.

The fact that it appealed to the racist GOP base was just a bonus for him.

Trump failed the US utterly with his pathetic response to Covid.

The entire world is aware of this sad, simple truth.

Not you though.

Why is that?

Kind of seems like the price you have to pay if you want to travel internationally.  Ripe for abuse? Maybe, but apparently it is working.

'Movement' doesn't imply GPS. From actually reading about it, it looks like it's based on association to cell towers.

GPS is (obviously) a poor choice if people are going to be inside.

For the two weeks quarantine, it's about the same, but better food available from Uber eats. After that, getting out to a functioning society is fantastic

So, for a moment, consider what was not misinformation in the comment. First New Zealand, and now Taiwan, is given media attention for having so successfully mitigated infections that the term contained can be applied.

That both have isolated populations and sufficiently small populations to test widely and enable tracing is not evidence their mitigation procedures (terms of quarantine) are useless to contiguous nations and regions, but their difference must be understood.

And not necessarily politically understood-- which is why I believe you've interpreted a comment as political in character when I read it as addressing the mechanics of a quarantine.

I lived and worked in China beginning from Feb 5th and left for Hong Kong Oct 11 and was isolated for 14-days upon arrival. I have a married associate who returned to Taiwan mid February and described the protocols in place.

You have questions? Because "misinformation"? You're soaking in it, Marge.

That would be a reasonable defence if Canada was in the same situation as the US. Except it is managing the pandemic a lot better, in part because its leadership isn't incompetent and has implemented measures that have limited the spread of the virus.

Maybe it had something to do with the gaping loophole he left in that Americans abroad were able to come back without quarantining? We didn't close the border to China, just to the Chinese.

Australia has been doing this too, apparently. I just watched a YouTube video about one man's experience. It costs $3000 Aus (about $2200 USD), and that includes very nice hotel accommodations for the two weeks of quarantine, three meals a day, cable and internet, and medical checkups. Which honestly sounds like a really good deal, all things considered.

The UK does have a land border with the Republic of Ireland. It also has internal borders between Scotland, England and Wales and the jurisdictions are reacting differently to the health crisis. e.g. Wales has banned most travel with England as a "circuit breaker" reaction.

Concerning Northern Ireland and the Republic, both are doing better IMO than England because they are treating it like the health emergency that it is. e.g. the ROI and NI did loosen up over the summer but locked down to maximum in autumn when the rates shot up and are still in lockdown. England did it far later and you can even see Boris Johnson is shiatting his pants over a Tory rebellion (and attention whoring twerps like Nigel Farage) if he keeps it much longer.

He didn't try to stop flights. He banned Chinese nationals and let others keep coming. If you were an American in China you were free to fly back to the US while infected and then immediately start spreading it here. That is why he was racist. He acted as though only Chinese nationals could spread the virus.

Among the first reactions from Americans to the news from China was avoiding Chinese restaurants-- that's the base to which he appeals and it is a Venn diagram of ignorance and chauvinism. Racial chauvinism? That's easy to identify. Chauvinism expressed through action and its basis in ignorance? Complex.

FTFA: At any point, if you break quarantine - which they can tell by the movements of your phone

This right here, is why it works. They do most of their contact tracing through cell phone data and financial transactions. This means that nobody is breaking quarantine because they KNOW they will be busted.

Honest question to those who look at them being so much better than us in handling this:

Would you be fine with the government tracking your phones movement and your financial transactions during this?

I was video chatting with my friend in Australia last week.  She lives on a farm.  She needs a pass to go anywhere, like to her job to get paperwork once a month.  I think she said they have about 40 cases of covid in her state and those people are all locked up in a hotel in full quarantine. I was pretty shocked at how buttoned up they are with so few cases and she was pretty shocked that I can go anywhere and do anything I want (if I wanted to) with the Rona out of control here.

As something that you can do each morning in your home in a controlled environment, it can be useful in saying...."ok....something isn't quite right here".

Being an island with a fraction of the population of the larger afflicted nations and with plenary powers to impose draconian controls and penalties might have something to do with it.

I wonder what they do if you arrive with a feature phone or no phone at all, give you one?

Taiwan person here. This American that wrote these tweets, that has spent a total of 5 days in a quarantine hotel in Taiwan, is not an expert on how things are here in Taiwan.

Things have not been "normal" since February. And masks are not "voluntary" here. Her series of tweets is basically a load of garbage.

Despite over 200 days without a single, local infection, most businesses still require a mask to enter. All public transit requires it. All government buildings require it. All malls require it. And they all do forehead temp checks.

One thing that there is not, as has never been, is social distancing. There's some markers on the ground and on some chairs in government buildings, but they are largely ignored. And your average Costco will have 50,000 people stuffed inside it on your average Sunday.

Starting next week, though it will just be a formality, the government is once again requiring all businesses to require masks (but is saying nothing about social distancing). Local people still freak out around anyone that doesn't look Taiwanese, even when they are wearing a mask. I regularly have local people move to a different aisle when they see me in the grocery store, etc. Life is not "normal" here- locals are still completely freaked out about foreigners infecting them. Every day, the CDC here posts the latest info, usually one or two cases caught at the airport. And every day, those posts are filled with reactions from locals about how Taiwan should completely ban all non-Taiwanese people from being on the island, because they are "dangerous", despite the 14 days of quarantine (and despite the fact that nearly all of the caretakers of the elderly on this island are Filipino or Indonesian).

If you want a country that has mostly returned to "normal", look at New Zealand.

Have a tiny country surrounded by water.  The end.

2020-11-22 8:50:30 AM
i can see how geographically smaller island countries are better able to contain an outbreak, taiwan is roughly the size of maryland in terms of land, just a much denser population. but way smaller in general, less airports, etc..

i'm glad they are able to keep it under control to an extent, but the problem here in the US is that you've got people here that lose their minds when asked nicely to pop on a free cloth mask to help stop the spread, i can only imagine what 'scanners' type head exploding scenario would occur with the trumper/qanon conspiracy loons the moment phone tracking was brought up. (which is extra funny because your phone is basically always being tracked anyway)

2020-11-22 8:53:01 AM
What the bloody fark are ya'll going on about banning travel from China?

The initial wave that hit mostly New York was the result of the European travel ban, that forced crap loads of people from Europe to have to rush back to the USA to get home in time, congesting in the airports, and certainly not traveling all the way to the west coast from Europe, with help from the Trump admin to keep everyone potentially sick congested in New York, therby causing 30k deaths no other state has reached to this point.

Even if they let travel from Wuhan through by that point, i'm not sure how it could compare to the numbers in Europe, especially Italy at the time, especially with a sudden confusing travel ban.

Any travel ban on China didn't cause this, especially when considering the stock market was already tanking because shiat was blowing up in Europe.  The immediate ban on Europe sure did.

Except in America you can't lock American citizens up (anywhere, even hotels) without due process.

You guys say all this stuff, like should've just suspended the constitution as if they're legitimate possibilities.
