According to News accounts, Covid disproportionately impacts POC. So not really something for Trump's base to worry about.

Um... you DO understand that POC aren't somehow more infectious or catch Covid easier than white people right? They are disproportionately impacted because they have fewer viable treatment options if they catch it and are less likely to work in jobs that can be done remotely so are more likely to encounter someone who is infected.

It's about obesity and diabetes, mainly.  A lot of POC have terrible eating habits, and are in no condition to fight off a serious disease.

Especially one as aggressive as the one Slow Joe's commie buddies have unleashed on us.

We cancelled our big Thanksgiving gathering because our 20 and 30-something kids, nieces, nephews and grandkids are all completely freaked out over Covid.

None of them have ever known adversity of any sort up until now, so I kind of get it.

We could have had a T-Giving dinner and distanced far better than Newsom and his crowd did, but the younger people in our family would have been placed unnecessarily on edge, or would have felt guilty about not showing up in the first place, so we let them off the hook about a week ago.

As an alternative, us Olds are getting together for a secret small gathering, and the kids aren't invited.

I appreciate your efforts, but please stop telling people not to be paranoid. If you touch your nose/mouth/eye one time when you shouldn't, you're infected and possibly dead. Let someone without a mask on (maybe even with?) talk one inch too close to you even if you're wearing a mask and a droplet hits your eyeball, you're infected and possibly dead. And several more possibilities where if you make one wrong move, you're infected and possibly dead.

If you're not paranoid, you're not paying attention. Be paranoid. Be paranoid as fark. It'll keep you uninfected and not dead.

And for deity-of-your-choice's sake, DO NOT let anyone that doesn't live in your home come into your home NO MATTER WHAT.

Farkin' jeebus.

I'm an Australian living in a city where we had a 6 day lockdown announced this week because of suspected community COVID. A city of over a million folks shut down as hard as it could (could buy groceries but not takeaway food, couldn't walk the dog or leave the house for excercise etc). It turned out to be based on shiatty information (a guy lied to the contract tracing crew and it took a day to work out), now they've called off the shutdown after 3 days.

It won't have been great for our economy to shut down for three days (by the time restriction were lifted) but as a community I think we did really well. We adhered to the restrictions, a few hundred notices were issued by the cops but that's not many really, we wore masks and we didn't lose our shiat and panic-buy or get aggressive.

If you want to manage a viral epidemic, follow the public health advice. It's really that simple. Australia is doing great. Japan (far denser and larger population) is doing great. Because we don't regard wearing masks and social distancing as a bad thing when there's a really good reason for it.

We haven't lost our freedoms. We're self-curtailing them briefly to protect the freedoms of our aged, invalid and otherwise at risk folks. And we're not hating it.

The selfish arseholes demanding their Freedumbs in America while killing literally a quarter of a million of their countrymen in the process are appalling. They are lead by a disgusting lazy scumbag whose science ignorance has gotten the US to this point.

Some people have missed various other events because they could "miss one birthday", "miss one funeral", "miss one wedding", "miss one father's day", "miss one mother's day", "skip one Easter gathering" etc.

Now that we know that the virus is not as deadly as initially claimed, that asymptomatic transmission rates were overstated, and most of the shutdowns were ineffective political theater, people want to see their families again.

Awesome post, thanks.

In some ways Trump is just another step on the path America's Republican Presidents have been on since Nixon. Win power, impose policy despite science or rational thinking because cashed up lobbyists, get campaigns funded by lobbyists, repeat.

I've previously argued on Fark that Trump is much less evil than Cheney. Cheney was intelligent and actively, busily evil. Trump is dumb, in denial and lazy. Evil requires active intent, Trump wants to be loved but can't be arsed doing his job properly. Trump's COVID death toll is arguably higher than the Iraq death toll but unlike Cheney Trump never got paid off for his deaths caused.

Freedom used to be an act of generosity, we granted each other freedom.

Now it's a selfish act of aggression.

ZephyrHawk: Your analysis sounds sensible. So, let us all remember - December 9th for the hospitalization spikes, and December 19th for the deaths. Happy Holidays everyone!

I was accidentally serious for a moment.  I'd like to check that data one more time and see if it's really like that.  Will be back in a bit with a thumbs up/down.   It's bad science to base anything on it.  But I've got those dates in my head, as well.

Much like the wave of cold & flu that comes 2 weeks after the first night of frost on the ground.  I don't expect it to be exactly on the day, but those spikes were really specific.  So it might be.  Ok ... lets see if I remembered what I saw, correctly...

Chinesenookiefactory: You all biatch about Trump, but his approach to the covid vaccine (Private industry competition) is why we are on the cusp of two vaccines being released.

Also, for all you progressives dancing in the streets right now, get back to me when gas is $5.00 and the economy is wrecked.

Oh....that will be Trump's fault too.

Morons.

Honey, we've got 50 states with 50 different approaches. We are united in name only. Red states do whatever the fark they want, and blue states half ass do the rest.

We have a GDP of 22 trillion, but don't you dare ask the government to do everything it can to give the citizens of the richest country in the world. Aid and comfort are for the politicians, and the rich. Our government is floundering like a fish out of water during the most difficult ...

But, but the socialisms, donchya know!

Seriously though, I couldn't have articulated what you said any better. That's why now is the time to rise and fight and never stop. They enemy won't, so we can't either.

I don't know if I have Covid, but I could wish the combination of whatever the f*ck kept me unable to even knit and bipolar mania on every single dipshiat doing this. You don't care enough about other people to keep yourself to yourself for a year? Especially when it could've been a few months if not for you? Go f*ck yourself.

Yeah....But you still have a lot to apologize for for giving the world Rupert Murdoch. That's probably done more damage to human safety, and human rights than thing any other country has done. Even Mel Gibson movies.

He's a US citizen mate, has been for years. You own him now.

/interesting Murdoch tale. His father, the late Sir Keith Murdoch, was an Australian WW1 correspondent from the front lines at Gallipoli. He challenged the military and its British leadership over their use of "over the top, boys" trench warfare attacks against Turkish soldiers well-armed and well-dug-in with German machine guns who were just cutting them to ribbons as they left the trench, yet the strategy continued. Murdoch Snr threatened to write articles for public consumption outlining the pointless slaughter of Australians and New Zealanders, a risky maneuver for a colonial nobody, and they stopped the useless and wasteful tactic.

Rupert is an appalling arsehole no two ways about it but his father changed WW1 history.

Okay...but you get to keep "Australia First" lady...whatever her name is.

The non-renewable energy sector worth trillions in the US and a massive supporter of the Republican Party.

Think it through.

You can't start blindly accepting science like public health virology when you've been engaged in a generation-long trashing of science which is in any way different to the science your granddaddy knew.

The fact your granddaddy might actually have lived in the time of the Spanish Flu when public health policy was found to be far superior in managing the situation than populist bullshiat is irrelevant.

And how does that explain the UK and Johnson? Only now with pressure from the population is the UK really trying anything (thumb-fingers all the way).

Populists need to remain popular?

How popular when your followers are dead?

In July, in Texas, there was a graph showing the spike from the 4th of July on the 17th.  So it took about 13 days to really hit home from that community spread event.  It was a REALLY narrow spike.  People who got sick enough to end up in the hospital, took 13 days to get that bad.  Then on July 27th, we saw a massive spike in the death rate.  So about 10 days after admission to die.  It was a Google News covid tracker for Texas, but by August it was really clear and easy to see the trend.

Based on those numbers, I expect 13 days after Thanksgiving to be a real test of the hospitals, and 10 days after that to be a real test of the morgues.  Though I am skeptical of the narrow'ness of the bands in that data.  that was a super-tight spike on both the 17th and 27th.

Usually a spike that narrow means a certain type of infection, or a certain type of person getting it that is fairly well represented in the population.

I do. No you personally, but them. I'm cheering for Covid now in these geographies/social circles where the people have had every opportunity to get on board with safety, etc., but have chosen not to. Let them burn.

We would, but medical and public safety personnel don't have that option. If we could barricade them and deny services, yeah, let 'em all die.

Maybe don't listen to them too much.
