I do. No you personally, but them. I'm cheering for Covid now in these geographies/social circles where the people have had every opportunity to get on board with safety, etc., but have chosen not to. Let them burn.

The problem is all the none-idiot people they'll be infecting along the way who aren't this idiotic througj sheer stubborn intransigence .

My sympathies to the health care workers.

I'm of the opinion that healthcare workers have had enough of this stupidity. They should refuse to go to work and barricade themselves in their homes or just disappear without a trace to more sane locations. They don't deserve this BS and the people yelling and cussing at them that they don't have covid cause it's a hoax that doesnt exist right up until they're intubated to save their lives don't deserve the effort.

It's denial of reality, a cornerstone of conservatism. Just like "if you never teach kids any aspect of reproduction ever teenagers won't get pregnant".

Aussie_As: Farkin' jeebus.

I'm an Australian living in a city where we had a 6 day lockdown announced this week because of suspected community COVID. A city of over a million folks shut down as hard as it could (could buy groceries but not takeaway food, couldn't walk the dog or leave the house for excercise etc). It turned out to be based on shiatty information (a guy lied to the contract tracing crew and it took a day to work out), now they've called off the shutdown after 3 days.

It won't have been great for our economy to shut down for three days (by the time restriction were lifted) but as a community I think we did really well. We adhered to the restrictions, a few hundred notices were issued by the cops but that's not many really, we wore masks and we didn't lose our shiat and panic-buy or get aggressive.

If you want to manage a viral epidemic, follow the public health advice. It's really that simple. Australia is doing great. Japan (far denser and larger population) is doing great. Because we don't regard wearing masks and social distancing as a bad thing when there's a really good reason for it.

We haven't lost our freedoms. We're self-curtailing them briefly to protect the freedoms of our aged, invalid and otherwise at risk folks. And we're not hating it.

The selfish arseholes demanding their Freedumbs in America while killing literally a quarter of a million of their countrymen in the process are appalling. They are lead by a disgusting lazy scumbag whose science ignorance has gotten the US to this point.

I am an Australian too, and there is a strange discontinuity going on...

This thread is about Fox News, a Murdoch media outlet, ridiculing the need for people to stay safe during a pandemic.

For some reason, while there are some serious problems with the way the Australian arms of the Murdoch media empire have covered this issue, I have not heard them ridiculing the need for people to stay safe during a pandemic.

In fact, here is a short article from one of our Aussie Murdoch papers supporting and promoting the need for people to stay safe during a pandemic.

Ignoring govt directions amid COVID-19 outbreak 'is a recipe for disaster'

Infectious Diseases professor Nigel McMillan says Australia's "world leading" protective measures "will allow us to control COVID-19 as long as it does not get out of hand". Calls have been made to strengthen health precautions in Australia by suspending cruises after the virus-stricken Grand Princess cruise ship docked in Oaklands after being stranded off the Californian coast for five days. Mr McMillan told Sky News so far people under the age of 30 have been in no real danger from the coronavirus and it was the elderly population who was at risk. The Gold Coast Griffith University cancer and disease specialist compared Australia's virus situation to "embers burning, rather than a raging bushfire" and said it could be controlled. Ignoring government advice on how to prevent the spread of the disease would create "a recipe for disaster," he said. "We need to get ourselves on top of this as much as possible because the work we do now will pay us off in the long run without having widespread illness from this disease. "We know the [isolation] practice works, it is just a matter of instilling it in everyone."

https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/national/ignoring-govt-directions-amid-covid19-outbreak-is-a-recipe-for-disaster/video/6573661e505d73584f1cf1d9b5271b54

What Murdoch IS doing here is dividing our states against each other by giving wildly different coverage depending on which party governs a particular state.

When Labor states (think Democrats) initiate lockdowns, the Murdoch press picks out everything they can to twist into stories that make those governments look incompetent. When Liberal states (think very moderate Republicans) initiate lockdowns, the Murdoch press fawns over them and praises their great leadership. Despite the fact that in some cases states with different politics have done exactly the same things!

I guess that thankfully our right wing politics has not become as loony and extreme as America's, although we do have a minority fringe.

For example, I doubt there would be any Republican state in the US that would develop legislation to spend A$32 billion on renewable energy. The Liberals in NSW are doing that.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-11-09/nsw-government-32-billion-renewable-energy-plan-announced/12862276

To end this, I doubt that Australians would allow Murdoch here to spread the crap that he has done in America. There are not enough radicals here for that to happen, thank GOD!

Yeah....But you still have a lot to apologize for for giving the world Rupert Murdoch. That's probably done more damage to human safety, and human rights than thing any other country has done. Even Mel Gibson movies.

He's a US citizen mate, has been for years. You own him now.

/interesting Murdoch tale. His father, the late Sir Keith Murdoch, was an Australian WW1 correspondent from the front lines at Gallipoli. He challenged the military and its British leadership over their use of "over the top, boys" trench warfare attacks against Turkish soldiers well-armed and well-dug-in with German machine guns who were just cutting them to ribbons as they left the trench, yet the strategy continued. Murdoch Snr threatened to write articles for public consumption outlining the pointless slaughter of Australians and New Zealanders, a risky maneuver for a colonial nobody, and they stopped the useless and wasteful tactic.

Rupert is an appalling arsehole no two ways about it but his father changed WW1 history.

Rupert's mother (Dame Elisabeth) lived a stone's throw from me (or vice versa I suppose), used to see her out and about a lot, esp at the local art gallery of which she was a great benefactress.  She was generally regarded as an all-round good egg.  Hosted community/charity events at her farm and all that.
You wonder what went wrong with Rupert.

SmithHiller: mainsail: I still have to wonder why conservatives want the population sick/dead. Who benefits from this?

There are people that are only concerned about the death rate and nothing else. They all like to make the  point that because death rate is low we can go about our business without restrictions.
They don't care about the people that  have died, They don't care about the people that have been hospitalized. They don't care that the health system is overwhelmed.

And they certainly don't care about the systemic debilitating internal damage people can get from even mild, non-lethal cases, like amputated toes, strokes and bloodclots, heart damage, eye damage, brain fog and the list goes on and on. We have no idea how permanent these injuries will be, and just think how debilitating it will be for the "economy" if the US ends up with 10-50 million people permanently disabled or on their way to a slow death due to long term covid complications.

This whole situation is just pure insanity, plain and simple.

Do you know the way to Mordor: To end this, I doubt that Australians would allow Murdoch here to spread the crap that he has done in America. There are not enough radicals here for that to happen, thank GOD!

I agree with your interesting take. I'll just give another couple of examples. In the last 25 years of Australian federal government history, the centre-right Liberal Party has held office for about 18 years. And in that time, although there has been a bit of tinkering, they've never really cut into the fundamentals of Medicare plus they've introduced gun laws which most Americans ridicule.

If anyone proposed Australian style single payer health care for the US or taking away semi-auto weapons from Americans, Fox News would quite simply lose its shiat.

Yet in Australia Tony Abbott (former arch conservative health minister then Prime Minister) and John Howard cite themselves as legends of Medicare and gun laws respectively, cheered on by the Murdoch press.

That's a hell of a disconnect.

vincentfox: mainsail: I still have to wonder why conservatives want the population sick/dead. Who benefits from this?

It predominantly impacts brown people

Not in Indiana.  Whites have done their best to bring racial parity to the state by going maskless and getting sick to such an extent that the victims list went from 15% Black to 7.1% Black.

Now the proportion of Black people who catch it for reasons other than their neighbors shirking masks is somewhat higher.

Please, for fark's sake, stop listening to people who do - people who believe that furthering this harm somehow betters or enriches their own situations, and so want you to ignore the CDC, the WHO, the scientists and the experts.

Stay home, if at all possible. If you can't stay home, wear a mask, practice social distancing, and carry hand sanitizer with you. If you have to bring stuff back home, practice sterile procedure. If you have to let people who don't live in your home into your home, ensure that they wear a mask, practice social distancing, and use hand sanitizer.

Don't be "paranoid," but do be aware of the risks involved, especially if you or anyone with whom you're in regular contact is in one of the high-risk groups. Don't be fearful; be responsible. You are now responsible not just for your own health, but for the health of those for whom you love & care. Don't be an idiot.

You know what?  I used to think like you...Then in August while people were out ignoring the guidelines this happened: Nearly 10% of postal workers (my coworkers) nationwide have tested positive for COVID-19.  Now we're well past that.  Now I'm ready to watch it burn.  You don't want to follow guidelines?  Fine.  But don't ask for any help when the economy is toast, when even those with money can't buy proper care, and enjoy that Turkey, because who knows if you'll be intubated by Christmas.

I have my low moments as well. Even in my anger and frustration, I wish they would do what was right. I struggle sometimes, trying to remember that they're still farking humans, and there are days where I'd farking strangle their mouthpieces with nary a qualm as I looked in their eyes while they passed from this world.

But, it does no one any good. Eye for an eye & eventually the whole world's blind, as the saying (I think) goes. It's hard to remember - I've had two bottles of wine, to quell the anxiety & agoraphobia, and I'm going to uncork at least one more tonight before I try to sleep - but if I had my druthers, I'd like them to live and learn. I want them to rejoin the human race; to feel sympathy and empathy, to understand that their needs are trivial compared to what's needed right now, to feel a greater allegiance to America and to humanity as a whole.

You won't hear me argue with your point of view. I just wish we hadn't gotten to this point, and I want more for us.

Sometimes you have to ask yourself if we as people deserve the privilege of living in a civilization.

I'm to the point of saying maybe we don't.  Or maybe I just need more beer and time to drink it.

Scorpitron is reduced to a thin red paste: It's all about political control, of course; Fox News (Murdoch) does not care about lives, but fluffing and agitating their armies of morons into permanent vexation. By the time Biden is sworn in the whole country will be ablaze.

Maybe then Biden should just say, "You know what? Pass. You keep it."

This is sick.

Some people have missed various other events because they could "miss one birthday", "miss one funeral", "miss one wedding", "miss one father's day", "miss one mother's day", "skip one Easter gathering" etc.

Now that we know that the virus is not as deadly as initially claimed, that asymptomatic transmission rates were overstated, and most of the shutdowns were ineffective political theater, people want to see their families again.

Ambitwistor:

In which case the Oakland county one was probably a similar issue.

Those issues must have been wide spread and over and over.  Our system genuinely sucks. Too bad the CDC's only remaining worker was so busy, and couldn't get any peer review before releasing his test (or whatever the hell hPpened)

frestcrallen: The virus isn't lethal enough.  If people were dropping like flies across all ages and demographics, there wouldn't be any debate.  It's selectively lethal, and therefore selectively ignorable.  It's unfortunate, but it's also human nature.

Add your uniquely American individualism to that heady cocktail and here we are.

That said, Fox news is disturbing even in soundbite segments.  No wonder you guys have problems with that stuff running 24/7.

Echo chambers do cultural damage on the left and the right, but damn.  If I only had remedial education and that network was my only source of information, I might have voted for Trump as well.

4% of the world with 20% of the virus and 1/4 million dead in 8 months.  That is 85 9/11s.  1 9/11 was enough to create a new department of government, install nude body scanners at airports, 10s of trillions of endless wars and occupations of foreign countries.  85 9/11s and the government leaders actively lie, which continies to kill, destroy business, and destroy lives.

Not if it will kill them too. There's a little dishonesty going around on that score. I'm willing to wager there are plenty of lefties who are eager to get back to a sense of normalcy, who aren't following the guidelines because they're just as tired of this shiat as everyone else. Selfishness is totally comprehensible.
Selflessness is unnatural.

It's irresponsible and short-sighted, but I don't know why everyone is acting so surprised.  Anyone who works closely with the general public on a regular basis will tell you that people, on the whole, are not hugely inspiring.  That's just life, and no amount of reprimand or public shaming will change it.

Meh. I say let 'em all drop dead. They're subhuman garbage. Every last one.

All I care about is the innocent people they infect and absolutely nothing else. I spend every waking moment getting anyone within my sphere of influence to take a militant stance on anything to do with these 'people'. It's a war and should be treated as such.

OF course.  This is why they portray Republicans as anti-mask and then claim that if 'we could just get everyone to weak a mask',.  It's cute for them to blame this all on Republicans, but the internet has a reach that is as long as its memory and there are numerous pics of Democrat politicians in public in crowds, at airports, etc., without masks.  They know it's bullshiat too.
