You all biatch about Trump, but his approach to the covid vaccine (Private industry competition) is why we are on the cusp of two vaccines being released.

Also, for all you progressives dancing in the streets right now, get back to me when gas is $5.00 and the economy is wrecked.

Oh....that will be Trump's fault too.

Why didn't you tell us?!!? Grandma and little Billy are dead now!

In July, in Texas, there was a graph showing the spike from the 4th of July on the 17th.  So it took about 13 days to really hit home from that community spread event.  It was a REALLY narrow spike.  People who got sick enough to end up in the hospital, took 13 days to get that bad.  Then on July 27th, we saw a massive spike in the death rate.  So about 10 days after admission to die.  It was a Google News covid tracker for Texas, but by August it was really clear and easy to see the trend.

Based on those numbers, I expect 13 days after Thanksgiving to be a real test of the hospitals, and 10 days after that to be a real test of the morgues.  Though I am skeptical of the narrow'ness of the bands in that data.  that was a super-tight spike on both the 17th and 27th.

Usually a spike that narrow means a certain type of infection, or a certain type of person getting it that is fairly well represented in the population.

You also had less noise due to Covid not yet being everywhere in July. More noise in that signal now.

Trump is a symptom, not a cause.  He's what you get when you teach creationism and climate change denialism as "science", abstinence-only as "sex education", and the Lost Cause myth of the US Civil War as "history".  And there's about 70 million Americans who think he's doing a bang-up job and voted for him to be re-elected.  Even after Joe Biden is sworn in on January 20th of next year, we're still stuck with those people.

BlackChickWhiteAccent: Aussie_As: Farkin' jeebus.

I'm an Australian living in a city where we had a 6 day lockdown announced this week because of suspected community COVID. A city of over a million folks shut down as hard as it could (could buy groceries but not takeaway food, couldn't walk the dog or leave the house for excercise etc). It turned out to be based on shiatty information (a guy lied to the contract tracing crew and it took a day to work out), now they've called off the shutdown after 3 days.

It won't have been great for our economy to shut down for three days (by the time restriction were lifted) but as a community I think we did really well. We adhered to the restrictions, a few hundred notices were issued by the cops but that's not many really, we wore masks and we didn't lose our shiat and panic-buy or get aggressive.

If you want to manage a viral epidemic, follow the public health advice. It's really that simple. Australia is doing great. Japan (far denser and larger population) is doing great. Because we don't regard wearing masks and social distancing as a bad thing when there's a really good reason for it.

We haven't lost our freedoms. We're self-curtailing them briefly to protect the freedoms of our aged, invalid and otherwise at risk folks. And we're not hating it.

The selfish arseholes demanding their Freedumbs in America while killing literally a quarter of a million of their countrymen in the process are appalling. They are lead by a disgusting lazy scumbag whose science ignorance has gotten the US to this point.

Honey, we've got 50 states with 50 different approaches. We are united in name only. Red states do whatever the fark they want, and blue states half ass do the rest.

We have a GDP of 22 trillion, but don't you dare ask the government to do everything it can to give the citizens of the richest country in the world. Aid and comfort are for the politicians, and the rich. Our government is floundering like a fish out of water during the most difficult ...

But, but the socialisms, donchya know!

So...

Analysis:  It was July 16th, not 17th.  This gives us a 14-day lag between the 4th of July and the surge.  This won't be a predictor unless we see it repeat.  So lets take Labor Day, and see if we get anything on Sept. 21st.

Uh ... yeah.  So 14 days is probably a good indicator.  Mark December 8th on your calendar.  It's only 2 examples, but that was exactly 14 days again.

If you want to see what I'm looking at, it's the New York Times' cases over time (new cases, per day), for Texas, which isn't going to pass up a chance to fire up the grill.

We should also take into account any lag in reporting.  If that is 2 days, then look for lines of cars at urgent care or hospitals around the 6th.

Awesome post, thanks.

In some ways Trump is just another step on the path America's Republican Presidents have been on since Nixon. Win power, impose policy despite science or rational thinking because cashed up lobbyists, get campaigns funded by lobbyists, repeat.

I've previously argued on Fark that Trump is much less evil than Cheney. Cheney was intelligent and actively, busily evil. Trump is dumb, in denial and lazy. Evil requires active intent, Trump wants to be loved but can't be arsed doing his job properly. Trump's COVID death toll is arguably higher than the Iraq death toll but unlike Cheney Trump never got paid off for his deaths caused.

Um... you DO understand that POC aren't somehow more infectious or catch Covid easier than white people right? They are disproportionately impacted because they have fewer viable treatment options if they catch it and are less likely to work in jobs that can be done remotely so are more likely to encounter someone who is infected.

False dilemma

We can follow guidelines *and* call out politicians for being hypocritical pieces of crap. Like my Mayor who took to the streets to celebrate with the crowd of Biden supporters, often seen with a mask around her neck instead of being worn.

While otherwise condemning other politicians for not acting appropriately and taking covid seriously enough, and telling us peasants to stay at home and socially distance.

It's about obesity and diabetes, mainly.  A lot of POC have terrible eating habits, and are in no condition to fight off a serious disease.
