The FaceBooks let Russia spread disinformation in 2016. Since Trump is bad and he likes Russia, we don't like the FaceBooks.
TikTok can allow the Chinese Communist Party to spread disinformation in 2020. Since Trump is bad and he doesn't like China, we must defend TikTok as it it were a beloved family member.

Tik Tok is a problem cos why now?

*rtfa*

Cos propaganda?

OK. See, this makes more sense to me now.

Trump isn't worried about a foreign country disseminating divisive propaganda per se.

See: Russia.

He wants to start his own RW propaganda outlet and he doesn't like the competition.

I view every app as a data mining exercise so forgive me for not being too upset here.

China looked in American homes to see what we buy to sell us more shiat.
(The answer is pentagrams, things are taking a turn for the goth. Goth dried up between 2013 and 2018, now it's back. (Yay!))

If you want to fark with China, start decorating you home in an oddly specific way, get your friends to mimic your decorations.

Um, yeah, everyone quick, prominently display bismuth crystals or photos of them where TikTok can see.

Figure out that you like girls with dildos and order a lot of wine online? That you are having an affair? Oh wait, they might blackmail your worthless ass!

My son and I watched this last night. 2 points from it.

1. Josh Hawley trying to come off as normal is creepy

2. My son said, " so TikTok is bad because it may be listening to you even if you opt out of that, yet if I say toilet plunger too loud when you are searching Amazon for something, you get toilet pop up ads for months on end. Its only ok if an American billionaire listens to our voices without consent?"

I'm glad he has some sense.

Cookie Control

Guarding against western corporations collecting what information is necessary to predict consumers' seasonal purchasing habits/budgets is why China banned Google and FaceBook to begin with.

Producers wish to optimize their inventories and distribution networks...fine, it's not inherently evil. Brutally competitive and difficult to regulate? Mostly. But extend that pursuit beyond national boundaries and currency exchanges, and it's a problem as big as they come.

You want to argue the Great Fire Wall is about censorship and tyranny, fine, but those are minor considerations to the economic plans of sovereign nations seeking to minimize disruption.

And what has been Silicon Valley's mantra? Disruption.

That is a disturbing breakdown of the app. And that's a lay person's ability to reverse engineer that. Imagine what sort of disturbing shiat the intel agencies have as to what that info is used for.

Seriously, that's just one half (how?) of the problem that's uncovered. I'm really curious what the second half of that answer is regarding how they use the info

The problem is that all this info goes straight back to the CCP's Intelligence agencies.

Between things like this and the unusually specific hacking targets (hospital systems, OPM, etc), it's pretty clear what they are doing.
1) creating a dossier of every single person so no one can hide, which means that you cannot send any covert people into China.
2) a dossier on everyone with all their data allows them to find easily manipulated people that they can use to spy for them. We're taking down a lot of Chinese spy rings in the US (especially at universities), the Chinese need to rebuild those rings with new blood. This will find willing participants

I read-it ;) Uber-coder refers to libraries as assembly and pretends to know transcoding protocols. Byte-dance has agreed to sell and that means opening the proprietary source code to the partner.

The deal fell through because there's only an accusation of menace and no Silicon Valley hedge fund wants to pay out the hard currency Tik-tok's current valuation can command having so rapidly and thoroughly established users.

What is Tik-Tok really? A utility YouTube failed to innovate. I first saw versions of it in 2014 and I have no doubt Google did as well.

Why Tik-tok was not re-packaged for users outside China? Or only for western users? Could Byte-dance have accused Silicon valley of copying? Could China, of all the nerve, have asserted creativity and leadership after years of reverse-engineering and copying itself?

Care to speculate?

The problem is that all this info goes straight back to the CCP's Intelligence agencies.

So they have the same basic information on me that Kellogg's gets from Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Mozilla, any grocery store with a loyalty programme, any credit card distributor, or any of hundreds of providers of "free app" developers.

If you use a computer that isn't air-gapped, which includes the one in your pocket, the information you're panicking about is already in the hands of hundreds of company's and dozens of national governments.  The time to stop this was thirty years ago when people like me were saying the data farming and privacy violations were going to be a problem, but we were ignored.

If you want to demonstrate that privacy and data security concerns are genuine, and not just some racist bullshiat about the Yellow Menace taking over your internet, then push for an American equivalent to the GDRP.  I know you won't because Americans lost your minds about what a heinous violation of business rights it was when the EU passed it, but at least the whinging about TikTok won't be such transparent codswallop.

There is always a difference between what a company collects on you and how they use it vs. an Intelligence agency, what it collects, and how it uses it.

I don't want either, however I'm more open to letting a private company do it than a hostile foreign intelligence service

Actually, China HAS explicitly and provably harassed, threatened, and in some cases kidnapped Chinese citizens (and people they consider Chinese citizens) inside the US. So they may not kidnap you and fly you to China on an unmarked plane, but they can and do break into the apartments of dissidents, send them threatening letters and packages, have them surveilled, etc.

China isn't a cartoon supervillain, but neither is it harmless and benign, and they have done and continue to do some truly shiatty things to people in the US.

And the algorithms will decide what videos you see, and the more you watch, the more your available videos will change.

I don't know what I did before I uninstalled TikTok, but 3/4 of my videos were in Spanish, and it started feeding me southeast Asian videos too.

My wife's fyp feed is now mostly sob stories and US political 'outrage' and satire videos.

The funny thing I find about TikTok (other than the unlimited boobies) is that there is so much repetition.  So many 'challenges' and everyone doing the same schtick in the videos.

It probably provides a pool of videos that can then be demographically targetted to fyp for impact.

Which stupid person so they show you, one from your 'own' or one from the 'others'?

Who are the experts getting sent to your page?  Who are the assholes that are put in your feed?

'Big data' probably knows what the best lineup is, or you will teach it.

I'm out of that pool for now.
