That's kind of an oxymoron, we can't help but like people that make us laugh.

I forgot about him, he's a Republican, and I think I laughed at him once.

Wanda Sykes, maybe.

Mitch Hedberg.  I love his jokes in written form.  Absolutely hilarious.  Just for some reason when he delivers them it grates on my nerves.

Steven Wright for the same reason.  Except his scene in "So I Married an Axe Murderer", that was gold.

Ricky Gervais. He's a criminal level POS but has some funny bits.

Will Ferrell. He gotten a lot of work and most of my friends think he's hilarious...but I just can't stand watching him.

Breaker Moran: Wanda Sykes, maybe.

Wanda is a way better writer than performer. The stuff she's written for other people has been gold.

I can't stand Russell Brand. The only thing I could really stomach him in was Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and that was mainly because my liking of Mila Kunis and Jason Segel barely surpassed my loathing of Brand.

I can't stand Steve Carell. He is somehow, a whiter, stupider Will Ferrell. I liked him much more when he was played by Griffin Dunne.

I was digging through a box of crap from high school a few years ago after my mom died. Found a playbill from a night I went to see a Second City performance out in the suburbs. I remembered a few members of the cast, and I even recall some lines. But it surprised me that Carell was in that show. I have no memory of him. None whatsoever. Amy Sedaris, yes. Ken Campbell, Razowski, yep. Not Carell.

For some reason I just can't stand her at all.
For some reason the voice and mannerisms of a bleached blonde valley girl just don't work well on her.

I know that probably comes off way wrong, but for some reason that always bugged me.

Quite a few British comedians mentioned, but I love some other British comedians that others don't like or have never heard of.

One I respect but don't get at all is the Tyler Perry empire. It must be funny to be so successful right? The guy runs his own movie and TV studios now just cranking content out.

Mrs Bslim finds her hilarious. When her eponymous show was a thing I was forced to watch it. I noticed that she managed to make herself the character that ALL the hot guys went after like dogs in heat. Looked to me like some weird Lena Dunham type overcompensating  bullshiat going on with her.

That would be on Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare!

Chris Rock. I used to enjoy his comedy. Then, when Nicole Simpson was murdered, he did his long schtick about how reasonable it was to feel homicidal rage at your ex for crimes like dating someone else and getting alimony or child support. His image, with the disgusting phrase (I paraphrase) "I don't agree, but I understand," has become a meme. I do get that comedians are edgy and say shocking things, but to empathize with a murderer about the reasons that way too many women are murdered...nah, just too much for me.

He is a very funny guy, but he definitely has said things that rubbed me the wrong way. I think he once said something to the effect that it was effeminate for a man to use hand lotion. I don't know why that turned me off so much. His impression of John Bolton nearly killed me.

Same here. Can't stand him. He was involved in a radio show with another famous Brit Jonathan Ross where they ended up live on national radio phoning Andrew Sachs (played Manuel in Fawlty Towers) and getting his answerphone decided to sing "I f*cked your granddaughter!" to the machine, which Brand had actually done.

He's also criticised the lack of affordable housing in London, while owning a huge apartment that takes up the space of half a dozen affordable flats.

Also James Corden.

You are taking a comedy routine way too literally. I don't know Chris Rock very well, but I'm pretty damn sure he doesn't condone murder. Comedy is hard, and to do well you have to push the envelope. It's completely unfair to not give him the benefit of the doubt, about something that grave.

Comedians:

Nick DiPaulo is funny, but I don't like him. He makes me laugh if I open my mind. But then I go back to knowing he's wrong. But comedians have license to hyperbole and I assume he's mostly just trying to joke about stuff.

Jeff Foxworthy...I don't think I'd find his stuff funny now, but he hit on a thing at the right time.

Jeff Dunham...I never really found him funny, but it's undeniable that he made lots of people laugh. Not just a few, he captured a large share of the Big Comedian economy. But I can't stand him.

Actors:

Tom Cruise makes a lot of people laugh. The ire he gets on the internet is not indicative of what a majority of people think of him. He's funny by comedian standards, but his antics make too many people laugh. I do respect him for his stunt work.

Tim Allen in his day was funny. I can't stand him now. Politics probably play into that because either he's doing it for comedy and legitimizing wrong thinking or he actually believes it which also legitimizes wrong thinking

Robert DeNiro...OK...when he did whatever the Meet the Fockers franchise, he was meant to be funny. And in some ways he was. But what always irked me was that it was supposed to just be considered funny because he was such a great actor. That's when I started thinking he was not such a great actor. He was just really good in those gangster roles he used to play. I mean, his acting was fine, but he was just doing his gangster character, but with funny lines. I don't think he does as much as they try to suggest. All the high up stuff he's been shown doing is very safely attached to something. He apparently was on the outside of a cargo plane as it took off. but he was in a harness and was as safe as a passenger sitting inside the plane. I've flown ultralights where there is literally nothing under me or beside me and nothing holding me in place but a single seatbelt. And I've abseiled a hundred feet plus where the only thing stopping me falling to my death was my grip on the rope, no safety wire.
Strap me onto the side of a cargo plane while it takes off? I'd do it.

I've seen Kate Beckinsale do as much stunt work, wire work, fight scenes etc.

I love Will Ferrell and the fact that his dumbassery is entirely acting and in real life he has college degrees and speaks multiple languages just makes me love him more.

I don't care for Jerry Seinfeld..I didn't like Seinfeld (the show)..He might be a decent guy, but his "comedy"
isn't as urbane or clever as he thinks it is...

George Cloony may be one of the nicest guys in the world..But for god sake he's no actor..
He has one character, and that character is George Cloony...That's it...As a person, I respect his
loyalty to his friends and co-workers..That goes a long way to make up for lack of any actual acting skill..

Harrelson's dad died in 2007.

I listen to a lot of stuff and feel like I know what comedians think about other comedians. Tim Allen did comedy until he got a tv show. He didn't care about being onstage.

I don't knock him for that. He got his break to act in a TV show and I think he got a movie or two. Good for him, but I don't care about his acting career. I did watch his Tool Man show...I'm spacing on the title.

doomsdayaddams: Chris Rock.

I don't spare much thought for Chris Rock, but that right there is why. I heard part of that bit, and I went insane with rage. I have never liked him since then, and he might be pretty funny. Some of his other stuff is funny.

It's obvious that he's funny. People pay real cash money to see him and his movies, so that fact is beyond doubt.

The problem for me is that I'm not one of those people. If he is in it I'm not ever watching it. Period. I find him, his mannerisms, and his characters utterly loathsome.

I like his performances in musicals better than his comedy.  Not my favorite Thenardier from a singing perspective, but his physical acting and chemistry with Helena Bonham Carter worked in Les Mis, and he was funny in Sweeney Todd, too.

His comedic characters aren't my cup of tea, though I respect what he does there.

My answer for subby's question?  I could go for the easy targets like the wave of angry white dudes who mostly shout and swear (think Bill Burr), but my really unpopular opinion?

Jon Stewart.

I respect what he did in metaphorically punching Bush in the face, but his comedy just didn't work for me.

His imitators are worse, though. I have tremendous respect for Stewart, but half of the comedy news genre now is just people a little too strongly influenced by him or possibly John Oliver, and the jokes get stale.

Many many moons ago... I caught a piece of his show (after it moved to ABC?)

He was interviewing a few member of the Twins baseball team following their World Series win. Maher lamented that it was impossible anymore for a small market team to win anymore; they didn't have the money to buy a team like the Yankees did.
This was demonstrably wrong and the players pointed out how many small market team had won in recent years.
Even as a kid, I was amazed how Maher was ignoring plain facts to push his initial belief. He couldn't just say "You know what, I'm wrong. Objective evidence proves my initial statement to be incorrect..."

That always stuck with me...and I have a hard time seeing him as anything other than a guy incorrectly arguing with professional baseball players about baseball.

Never attracted to his act, it was one of those 'over the top' acts that succeeds in going so far over that it goes into 'trying too hard'.  Saw him on a rerun of MASH (bit part) from before he got famous...actually a pretty decent actor.  And outside of playing his nightclub character, seems like a pretty decent fellow.

If there's no risk and no skill required then it isn't a "stunt". I saw a "stunt" he did for a MI movie where he was jumping out of a building, but he was harnessed to a wire that automatically slowed him down and stopped him. Literally a sack of potatoes would have done as good a job.

This isn't a congressional panel. The discussion has evolved into one where we discuss comedians who we don't find funny. If everyone stuck strictly to the arbitrary rules there would be two posts. Because "they're funny, but I don't like them" is an incredibly rare combination.

A lot of people think Will Ferrell is funny. I don't. And I really don't like him. I'm not sure if he's been funny accidentally. Even his best stuff "Celebrity Jeopardy" is funny despite him. He's supposed to be the straight man but can't even pull that off without his trademark man-baby yelling. So, he wouldn't count.

But in a list of weirdly popular unfunny people, he's near the top. Popularity means nothing. Americans are fart-joke yelling morons.

The soul of good comedy is telling the truth. Bob Newhart's bus driver training bit, for an early example. He wasn't being mean to bus drivers, he was just telling the truth about oblivious bus drivers in a situation every bus riding button-down American could relate to.

Gervais, I think, is not an angry or a mean man. The worst I can say about him is that he's child-like, and curious. Not entirely bad things if you're a comedian, though they could come off as mean to others. I'm not sure his intent is to be mean. But he does tell the truth. And he says funny things. Sometimes a thought can be funny, but sound mean, but it isn't meant to be mean. "Judy Dench licking her A-hole" for example. He doesn't mean that's what she was doing - but you put together Judy Dench and general cat behavior, you'd be an idiot NOT to make that joke.

Context is everything in comedy. And I think as society is increasingly getting loaded up with STEM literalists who never learned to think outside of a logic tree, we're going to see more and more outrage. "BuT LOgiC!" Logic is the opposite of comedy, as life isn't logical at all.

A good comedian is able to look at things differently than the rest of us, and point out the connections we're missing. Seinfeld is an awful comedian. He looks at things that we all see the same, and repeats them back to us. He writes jokes that good comedians discard for being too obvious. "But why is he so popular?" you might ask. Americans can't handle the truth, so they consume things they're comfortable with. Dave Chapelle is brilliant at telling the truth, but he quit because his fans didn't farking get it. Some of them took his satire as an open license to be racists.

Today, Americans are too god damned dumb on average. Take the Chevy Chase/Richard Pryor job interview sketch, for instance. It could never be made today, even though everything in it was legitimate satire. "You can't say the bad words - the libs will just hang you for it!" No. You can say the bad words if you're playing the bad guy. It's about context.

What the hell is my. there's a shiat I gotta wash the car. In conclusion, Libya is a land of contrasts.

2020-10-31 5:53:23 PM
To dig a little deeper - good comedy is also about things you can change, but won't. It's why Mitch Hedberg's donut receipt joke is funny, and someone just screaming "n-werd" or "f@g**t" isn't. You really don't need a receipt for a donut, but you get one anyway, always, and it's just a waste of everyone's time. Jerry Lewis calling someone's son an illiterate f*g on a muscular dystrophy telethon, well...

Funny comes from love and understanding and introspection, not hate. It's why the right has no decent comedians I guess.
