Not even being hyperbolic.

I hope for that.

But I'm not a monster.  I wouldn't force that on him.

I'd ask for volunteers.

In New Jersey (which this election is almost entirely absentee ballot), Republicans were complaining that the votes would start being counted before election day.

So...

Republicans don't want votes collected before election day, they don't want them collected after election day.

If I didn't know better, I'd almost think the Republicans just don't want the votes to be counted at all.

chawco: dletter: Trump promoting the fact that vote counting "ends" when talking heads on the TV first say that a race is "won" is peak "Trump speak".

I mean, if that was the case, Gore won Florida and the entire 2000s is fake!!!!

Man. Do-over

This time I'm not marrying.my now ex wife.

*raises hand* I have made a couple of  questionable decisions myself. Also I'd love to see how a Gore administration would have handled 9/11.  I'm in! Let's meet at the Large Hadron Collider as soon as we can travel again.

Democrats are ahead in mail-in voting and early voting.

dumpy the redhat asshole there has convinced himself that on election day, a tidal wave of concealed trump voters will appear like magic and descend on the polls to somehow cast more votes in a single day than were cast by all the other voters in all the days preceding it.

This will, he believes, put him into the lead, and he will then declare himself the winner.

He's counting on his rigged supreme court to end it for him there, stopping all counting at that point, so that no more votes can arrive to take his win away.

I'm hoping that the historic number of votes which have been cast so far will kill that plan stone dead the moment the first results start rolling in.

2020-10-30 12:55:17 PM

shoegaze99: And yes, I am ashamed to think that way. It makes me uncomfortable. It's not the kind of person I want to be. I don't like feeling that way and am not proud of it.

But I'd be dishonest if I denied it.

If it makes you feel any better, I have thought the same thing.

I am a free-thinking rugged individualist whose opinion on this issue is entirely consistent with the right-wing propaganda in our billion-dollar corporate process, and in no way exacerbated by the emotional investment I have in the politicians who act as my lone outlet for control in an increasingly complicated world that I promoted through my enthusiastic support for economic growth.

eKonk: Is it worth pointing out that the election does end on November 3rd, not just in NC but in every US State and territory?  Any ballot postmarked on, say, November 4th, is going to be invalidated.

The ELECTION ends at the end of Election Day, yes,

The count does not, and it's the count he's talking about here, not the election itself. The ballots in question are ballots that would have been cast on or before Election Day. At issue are whether or not they should be counted.

And they should be. They were cast on or before Election Day. They are valid ballots.

The count is never finished and certified on Election Day. We may think it is because television networks usually call the election that night, but the actual count takes some time to finish and certify.

Since Donald Trump only knows what he sees on TV, he doesn't understand this.

Bottom line is, this isn't about allowing people to vote after Election Day, it's about counting votes that were cast BEFORE Election Day but that weren't received until after thanks to the post office.

zorkmcgork: Do the MAGA rubes know and understand that this a complete lie?

The rubes I know when I bring up what about military votes say that they serve at the pleasure of the president so it doesnt matter who they vote for they have to listen to him. They also are now on the kick of even you are in line at (fill in the time) your vote shouldnt count since you didn't "vote" by the ending time.

2020-10-30 12:57:00 PM
So... no votes after Election Day, and they're doing their best to discredit early voting and vote by mail. And they're destroying in-person voting on Election Day by closing precincts.

I wouldn't put it past them to try to cancel in person voting on Tuesday because of Covid.

Farking traitors to democracy.

The ironic thing is - he's going to take an epic ass beating on Nov. 3rd.  Then the law suits begin.  My guess is that the litigation will still be ongoing as he is forced to watch Biden's inauguration.  So basically, he will try to keep the election going for months and months after November 3rd.

I had no idea that a person could produce a tweet that didn't age well from the very second you posted it - but here we are.  Thank you 2020.

Right.  But we will have trouble because of the direct appeal to ignorance.

Joe Sixpack here in Indiana thinks it's over on Tuesday at 11:00pm, doesn't know there is a certification process, and he is a Trump cultist.  When Trump says "they've had to count past the next day" these idiots believe him.

I love how the election is supposed to start and end on 11/3, voting in person only, requiring ID...

Assuming everyone has the day off, is in their home area, is motile... in California for example, 40 million people are supposed to vote in 1 day? During a pandemic? How many thousands of polling places would that require?
That crush is supposed to be more reliable and secure than having a ballot mailed to you to fill out and drop off in secure box?

The insanity of the republican wet dream is more than transparent, and it should be grounds for a 72 hour mental health hold.

The Election should END on November 3 unless I lose, in which case the courts should take as long as possible to rig a win for me.

This is fair take.  Call it gaslighting or whatever you want, but this is an administration that has spent four years trying to push their alternate view of reality on the country and the world.  That isn't going to just stop next Tuesday.

To some extent it does, yes.

I'll never claim to be a saint -- far from it -- but I don't want to be a monster, either.

But I know I'm not alone in this. Even Trump knows he brings this out in people (and he revels in it). Woodward quotes him: "I bring rage out. I do bring rage out. I always have. I don't know if that's an asset or a liability, but whatever it is, I do."

For my part, I just want him removed from power and influence, and for him to be deeply humbled in an unavoidable way.

That would be justice.

Donald Trump's approach to letting his supporters in the armed forces have their say doesn't involve waiting for a few ballots to trickle in from the other side of the planet.

If Beer Boy and Handmaid Amy can't find some legal excuse to save his skin, don't rule out his ordering anybody in the US armed forces still willing to obey him to do it for them.

Augusto Pinochet lost the 1990 referendum in which he asked for a mandate to effectively remain Chile's dictator---something he only agreed to because he was sure he could not lose. When he did lose, his first instinct was another violent crackdown on his opponents. The only thing that prevented another bloodbath was his own generals telling him as one: "Gus, it's over."

Yep. Some people might remember that there was a shift in the electoral votes several weeks after the election. And there were 7 faithless electors, 2 pledged to Trump and 5 pledged to Clinton, who voted for someone else. That's something we couldn't have known would happen on Election Day.

22 States require ballots be received by Election Day.
28 States allow some grace period for the delivery of ballots postmarked by election day.
source https://www.fvap.gov/guide

Washington's deadline isn't really election day. We're an all vote-by-mail state and the rule is that all ballots must be postmarked by election day. We never have a complete count for at least a few days.

In Oregon, ballots do have to be in hands of election officials by 8:00 PM on election day. I would like to see the deadline extended for ballots that are postmarked by election day, but we've been a vote-by-mail state for a couple of decades and we're familiar with the rules. We also have drop-boxes, and the media and election officials do a good job letting people know when it's too late for the mail.

Technically the voting part of the election does indeed end on November 3.  The counting of the votes and certifying of the results does not however.  So in some respects if you could say the "election is over" And the vote counting begins, and the results are announced.

So the official GOP position is that we can't even begin to count any ballots that arrive before election day, but we also can't continue to count any ballots once election day is over.

What the fark is this shiat?  We should be both tabulating absentee ballots as they arrive and counting all valid ballots until the counting is finished.

According to the US Code (3 U.S.C. §7) the Monday after the second Wednesday in December of presidential election years is when the Electoral College votes which falls on Dec 14th 2020.

One could argue that they can legally keep counting until Dec 13th.
