(The New York Times)   Donald Trump has cancelled his election night celebration at his hotel in Washington and will instead spend it quietly at the White House pushing all the furniture against the doors and handcuffing himself to the staircase   (nytimes.com) divider line

Farkin_Crazy: Error 482: aedude01: shastacola: Error 482: "a party would have to be paid for by the campaign, which is facing a cash crunch in the final weeks of the race"

This. This is the only reason it's being cancelled. Trump has shown repeatedly he does not care about pandemic restrictions or safety. He is too delusional to admit that he might lose. But he can't grift any money from it, and that's something that he would find both believable and important.

If Donald Trump thought that all cameras would be on him in his moment of glory he would not give a shiat about the money grift, he craves attention more than money.

Agreed.  He'd find some way for the Fed. Gov't to pay for it if he thought he was going to win.

The solution there would be to hold it somewhere else, where he can stiff them on the bill. I wouldn't be surprised if he tried it, but did so at the last minute and couldn't find anywhere that would take him up on it.

That's why nothing will be held at the hotel.

Trump doesn't mind it one bit when vendors get stiffed.

Unless he's the vendor. Then he wants 2x the original contract. He's gotta get his taste, ya know.

This. As TFA pointed out, this whole thing has been a big fundraiser for a seriously strapped campaign. "Come party with the pres and his first lady  as we celebrate beating the evil dims!" My guess is that people within the campaign came to him and said "We can't afford this. You're going to have to donate the hotel space." And tRump, pouty toddler that he is, crossed his arms over his chest, stamped his feet and said, "No. If you aren't paying me then I won't go to the party. No."

I wouldn't be shocked to see this turn around in a day or two when they agree to pay for the hotel after all to avoid an angry mob of otherwise useful idiot donors.

JerkStore: It was unclear why the plans had changed. But the prospect of the president appearing on the night of the election at the hotel was certain to reinforce concerns about Mr. Trump mingling the office with his business.

It would also reinforce questions about whether the hotel would be in violation of Washington coronavirus restrictions limiting gatherings to 50 people. And a party would have to be paid for by the campaign, which is facing a cash crunch in the final weeks of the race.

So what's the real reason? These are all too sensible and exactly what a responsible person would do, so we know they aren't what is guiding Trump's decision.

He believes he's going to lose and as humiliating as that would be, the only way to make it worse is to plan a big party for himself where nobody will bother showing up.

President "I'll Do What I Want Because" would have packed the hotel to the hilt. He loves a spectacle to the point he made the White House his personal reelection backdrop, especially with the Fourth Celebration.

There's the let's-not-suck-each-other-dicks realization that he can't steal enough of this election to make a difference.

Katie98_KT: shastacola: Katie98_KT: Wasn't the gathering illegally large anyway? If he does it in the WH, then DC govt can't shut it down.

There isn't going to be a large gathering at the WHite House though.

as someone posted after me - the DC restrictions are to 50 people. I'm assuming the White House holds more than 50 people.

Because he suddenly cares about covid protocols and restrictions?

Nah- he wants no eyes on him when he gets crushed.

Farkin_Crazy: Opacity: I may be the constant Trump cynic, but I have a suspicion that what's really going on is he's going to take a multi-hour nap at the White House (instead of in a room/suite at his hotel) until whatever time comes that he has to give a speech. Instead of taking an escalator down to the event, he'll have the secret service chauffeur him over, either give his congratulatory "4 more years" (ugh, Canada save us all) speech, or his "it isn't over, we're contesting CA, FL, PA, TX, and VT all the way to the court above the supreme court!" speech.

Maybe I'm being too much of an optimist, but I don't think his challenges are A. Going to help him and B. Are going flip the states needed to turn out differently.

Not to mention (and I've never heard anyone even bring this up) most every state has a margin in which a recount request can even be made.

For example, if Biden wins a state by a full point, chances are that state is not going to even be allowed, by state law, to be challenged.

I don't think you're being an optimist, I think you're being intelligent and showing a reasonable understanding of election laws. None of that stops Trump from being Trump. Who knows for sure what stunts he's going to try, but I'd imagine he's going to try to use the courts to try to stop counting while he's slightly ahead, or while the margin is within the range where he can contest if he thinks there's no way he's going to win a state. Barring state-level challenges, I could see federal level challenges occurring.

After I wrote my original post, I realized a real reason for Trump remaining at the White House is he can hide with his army of lawyers a lot easier and more securely than he can at the hotel, so napping aside, it's really probably about how they're attacking the process.

I sincerely do hope that all states worth greater than about 10 EVs are awarded, either way, by greater than about 5% of the vote. That's a very significant margin to challenge in court. Pipe dream, I know, but it's really the only way to ensure this isn't complete chaos.

I really am holding on to the hope that SO many people have heard about the danger of him stealing the election, that it caused them to come out and vote.

And it seems that for the first time since 2016, that hope is justified.

Because the only way I'm wrong about that would be if all of those millions of people that have voted already, voted for Trump.

hubiestubert: It's good that his handlers have finally gotten through. Now if they'd just leave a pistol on the nightstand we could all get back to trying to dig ourselves out of this mess.

That is creatively ugly, but not as ugly as the person who has to work 2 jobs and has no healthcare being forced to handle biohazard without proper PPE or training being assigned to clean the scene up so the press can say "the president died in his sleep".
They will have to put coil springs on the gurney and lower him to a waiting flatbed trailer below his room to haul him off.
I'm sure his corpulence will not have to wait in a refrigerated trailer, and if they place a shunt in his gunt and copper tube it through his casket to the surface, they can light the methane and he will have his own Eternal Flame.

Here's the thing, should this ever make it to a SCOTUS ruling.

To date (so far as I know) SCOTUS has deferred to a state's written laws.  Only, in a few cases, did they take up challenges aimed at the Governor, for directives in voting issues

It would be pretty unusual now to say that federal court decisions should rule after declining, in some cases, to even hear cases.

Mind you, I am only speaking about recounts, or audits, in states where their laws define the criteria for challenges. Not all states have them. Iowa doesn't.

Maybe I'm being naive, I dunno, but I don't see states leaping to ignore their laws to overturn elections.
