California has a history of moving water around via canals to supply the southern part of the start with tap water and irrigation. Since the Santa Ana winds are making forest fires much worse down there they should look into channeling sea water into some uninhabited desert areas as a way to artificially increase humidity and calm the murder winds down a bit.

I think I saw this in a Highlander movie that never existed.

I like this... carve a channel/canal from the Pacific to the new "Mojave Sea"

Sure, it might cause ecological damage to a desert, but what has the Mojave done for us lately?

/Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a Nuclear Winter.

Yeah, well, the Martians tried that, didn't work, so they invaded Earth, caught a disease, and all died.

It's called geoengineering, and every time its mentioned it makes environmentalists hiss like vampires when someone's pulled out the garlic.

Serious people have been writing about geoengineering for decades.  We already do it, in a haphazard and scattershot form.  We ought to be doing it in a planned and deliberate way.

We could heat the Earth up a bit, they say hotter temperatures are better for life. A whole new series of species could thrive. I'm thinking maybe +10C

No way this could have any unforeseen side effects.

Every time this has been tried the effects have been disastrous because human beings are too stupid to know the consequences of their actions.

Kudzu
cane toads in australia
melaleuca trees
honey bees in north america

the only one that was successful was the introduction of earthworms to the new world.  And even then we probably caused an uptick in nematodes that make some plants impossible to grow in some places.  We just never really looked.

Eh...if it goes wrong we just take one of the backup planets from storage. We have those right? Right?

Check with the mice and see where they are on that.
