My "mall parking lot" meat story is the Dollar Tree selling $1 steaks.

I didn't buy any...

God. Who would buy garbage like that when Walmart will sell you a box of frozen steaks for 4.99?

PainInTheASP: God. Who would buy garbage like that when Walmart will sell you a box of frozen steaks for 4.99?

We found a number of Better Business Bureau complaints from around the country about Star's steak show, one complaint saying "poor quality meat," another saying "not sure what kind of meat they are."

people that are so dumb they expect it to be good and then call the BBB on them

But buying speakers from sketchy guys in white vans is still OK right? I mean, they just got too many in the last shipment so everything is on the up n' up.

That might explain why the last time I saw one of these they were camped out in a tractor supply parking lot.

Damn.

I was gonna make a snide comment about how the center dude needed ketchup to be able to eat the steak and then I remember it's probably not really steak.

In the end, it's not a rip-off, but is simply a case of you get what you pay for.

Of course it's a rip-off - the swindle is in knowing just how cheaply you can get USDA-graded beef, if you're willing to buy USDA Select or Standard grades. Most likely, that was Select- or Standard+, given how little apparent marbling was present.

Cut a 1/4" ribeye off that, papain it to hell, and boom! There's your "two-dollar ribeye."

The fun part is that the lower-grade beef is usually better for you - less fat, denser meat - but it can be really, really hard to eat, especially if you're not a fan of chewing shoe leather. Braises, stews, other low & slow applications, are great for the cheap stuff.

I sold those one summer and they actually sound pretty good. They're ferrofluid cooled lol.

When I lived in a college town it was car and home audio equipment once and twice with the steak guys.  With the steak guys I remember they tried to water down what you got for X by making the total package a lot of ground beef and chicken. There may have been fish in there also. Then there was the shiatty steak.

I knew what I was looking at and what it was worth because I was a butcher when I was in college. Needless to say I didnt buy anything.

/I saw and bought one of those dollar store "ribeyes" once to see what it was really about. it was as terrible as you would imagine.

No, beef curtains are best pounded, left to marinate, and then stewed.

Whole Foods near me sells local grass-fed ribeye for like $15 / lb

That steak looks like it's 4oz or so ... they say it's 15% "tenderizing solution" ... likely even more cut.  looks like a 1/2 oz tumor in the middle and probably a bunch more grizzle and mystery chunks. So maybe at best can call it $2 for 2 ounce of actual ribeye - more expensive than Whole Foods.

but don't forget how he poured on literally half the bottle of steak sauce, before tasting either meat OR sauce. and then started whining at the end, about how it was hard to eat very much because of how bad the steak sauce was.

$mai_waifu and her father pull that same shiat with salt (or ketchup, or dressing, etc.) - and then complain very loudly, lol.

also thigh-larious how that middle guy stuffed himself on potatoes (maybe because the sauce was so bad, hahaha!) and the first guy barely had any potatoes - I guess they each had some brilliant tactic in mind? but then that third guy just shoving it all in with both hands, now that was farking glorious.

Yep. The easiest way to swindle someone is to convince them that they're swindling you.
