The only advantage the Sherman gave our GIs was numbers.  Their armor was quite thin.

I read many years ago that the reasoning went like this.

Three Shermans could take out one Tiger tank because the Tiger could only fire fast enough to take out two of the Shermans before the third was close enough to take out the Tiger.
Therefore mass production and a larger population would prevail.

It sounds like a horrific rational and yet I can believe some Military minded types may consider it acceptable :(


Actually it is because of bureaucracy and debates within the Army between the Infantry, the Cavalry, and Armored Forces, because they couldn't decide if they wanted scout tanks or infantry tanks and how tanks even fitted into the war plans, so the M3 and M4 medium tank designs were the ones they settled with.  It was seriously contentious and bitter between 1918 and 1941.

Besides, the Tank Destroyer Branch (and yes, that's how screwy it was in that Tank Destroyers had their own branch within the US Army instead of just being a subset of the Armored Forces Branch) had the Tiger tanks covered.

Plus, Sherman Jumbo's and Fireflies had pretty equivalent armor effectiveness to their German counterparts.
