Plus the past 4 years have been what can best be described as a transformative event.

Between Covid, the economy, the crazy that has been Trump, and the mucking.of the judiciary,a large part of our society is severely scared by the actions of Trump and the GOP.

They won't forget this.  They will carry the base vibes of the GOP with them for most of their lives.

This is like the Civil war or the Great Depression.   This will leave a mark.

Also add to it that the courts the GOP packed are going to make a ton of horrible rulings and just keep reinforcing how horrible the GOP is.

I've been reading some version of this story for decades.  Demographics aren't riding to the rescue.  You're going to have to court and win over voters, no matter how much you may dread the prospect.

When I was young I used to think things would be better when all the old folks died off and we could introduce new ideas.  What I didn't realize then is they just get replaced by a new crop of old folks.

And they forgot to farking vote when they were hippies. One of the 2 Biggest GOP electoral college wins ever happened on their watch.

I contend that for every 5 guys involved in the hippie movement, 1 was a true believer and the other 4 were just trying to get laid.

We could start actually teaching our children to understand how the Internet actually works and/or teach them introspection and how to evaluate messages media presents them with, but that would make advertising harder and less effective, especially the political kind, so that is more of a fantasy at this point.

I suspect that the GOP is going to split in two, with the more radical and MAGA based portion as one and the other as what the party was 12 years ago before they started catering to the extreme. At least one of them might be able to be reasoned with again so that our government can be functional.

Was gonna say this. My coworker math teacher ... smart guy. Like 15 years my junior. We both love math and hockey. And he's like aggggggggh just want the masks gone!! Every time we chat I try to work on his ideas. Last time he brought up herd immunity and we calculated something like a 2/3 to 4/5 infection rate and the resulting death rate. Could see how dejected that made him even with a lowered 1% death rate.

His wife tested positive. Him and the kids nothing. Personal experience helps drive the younger Magats.

I'm trying but the younger right wings are NOT convinced. Even the educated ones.

But us new old folks are way cooler than they were. I'm in my mid-50s, technically a boomer since I was born in 64. I've smoked pot, dropped acid, dated multiple races, and have gay friends. We're not nearly as stodgy as they used to be.

Weren't people saying this 4 years ago? As long as gerrymandering and the EC are still farked 3 ways to next Sunday, we'll be teetering on the brink of disastrous minority rule for generations to come. Long after anybody in this thread is dead and forgotten.

We've still got 3 months of this administration to get through, at least. It's going to give Lame Duck Congress a whole new look.

The worst ones I have seen have been the younger ones but there don't seem to be as many of them. Just seems like it because they are so loud and obnoxious about it. Seems like a good 90% of the people at work under 30 hate Trump with a passion.
So for every Wohl you got 9 that want to stomp a mud hole in him.

I don't buy that for a second. It's not genetic. Being a horrible person is learned behavior. Society changes over time. The % of people born post-2000 have the same prejudices of those 50-80 years ago? Hell no

There was just a similar article in the Atlantic that talks about this.  The assumption is that younger generations align much more closely with Democratic ideological views, and that this generation is more racially diverse. But is that true everywhere?  Because in New York and California - sure.  But red states seem to still be full of lily-white evangelical honkies as far as I can tell...

Either half the people in the U S. are truly horrible, or the insanely leftward swing of the Democratic Party over the last 40 years has made many of them desperate enough to vote for Trump when they might have considered a moderate candidate.

One of these is the truth, the other a deplorable alternative.

Conservative Boomers didn't hate the same way that their ilk in the Greatest Generation did, so it stands to reason that Republican Gen Xers and Millennials will find new and innovative ways to be pieces of shiat. So don't count those assholes out just yet, they still have plenty of fight left in them and the right's perpetual bullshiat apparatus is amazingly adept at brainwashing.

One loud arsehole can ruin a room even if there's 20 other quiet non-arseholes there.

You remember the MAGAts, the regular folk don't leave any impression other than the stereotypes people assign to them.

Take an inventory of the people you know under 30. Like a real count. Then enumerate the MAGATs, then assume everyone else is more than likely the opposite.

The whole brainwashing situation with the Republicans these days and the way they run around disrupting society reminds me of something.

The mindless adulation of the great leader.

The politically motivated violence the leaders' fanatical followers felt free to inflict on their perceived enemies.

These followers' utter scorn for expertise and professionalism, preferring to follow and practice only what their Supreme Leader says.

The severe degradation of the followers' capacity to be properly educated.

Am I talking about Trump? Yes. But I am also talking about the Chinese Cultural Revolution.

The quote from the article below is not from exactly the same circumstances as Americans face now. But the flavour of both events is very similar...

In 1969, Mao said Russia intended to bomb China, so Gao and her classmates spent school days digging trenches instead of studying.
"All my essays began the same: 'The revolutionary situation is fantastic, Mao is better than ever and his face is radiant, but there are still class enemies that debate on his deathbed.'"
When not doing hard labor, schoolchildren studied nothing but propaganda and spent their time screaming insults at teachers.
Today, she said, these same people are 50 or 60 years old and can barely read and write, and have trouble adjusting to Chinese society.

For me, by studying the Chinese Cultural Revolution we can gain much insight into today's politics in America.

Not to harsh your mellow, but that's what people said about Dubya after he left office.  2 years later the Republicans won the house and gerrymandered the fark out of it to maintain another 8 years of control which included electing Donald Trump to power.

To the kinds of malignant shiatheads that still support the Republicans their problem is that the people in power aren't vile enough.

Yeah, but what states are you seeing this in?  The article doesn't address the importance of geography in this demographic swing.  If deep red states stay deep red-- it doesn't matter.  But if battleground states like Florida, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Ohio, etc, go from purple to blue because conservative boomers die off and are replaced by Gen Z democrats, that's going to make a huge difference in national politics as a whole.

Boomers were outliers because they were even more politically conservative than their parents, instead of more liberal as is usually the case, so mentioning that a small minority were all about free love and pot doesn't amount to much.

There's also some misconception that almost all boomers were hippies.  My parents who have been life long Democrats, were too poor and too socially conservative (drugs, promiscuous sex = bad!) to be hitching rides across the country to Haight Ashbury.

In reality, I think the 'hippie' movement wasn't as large as some people seem to think it was.

This is accurate.  Most Boomers were not hippies. If you watch any Vietnam era footage, you see plenty of clean shaven young people ready to kick some hippie ass.   My liberal parents couldn't relate to anything hippie.  They were too busy working.

No, it'll disappear down the memory hole. The moment Joe Biden takes office, America has a new thing to focus on. On the right, the drumbeat will the same 'he's the worstest thing ever'; and on the left the criticisms that he hasn't fixed everything perfectly will soon rise above the fading argument that 'he's better than Trump'.

The huge 'Yes We Can' momentum that Obama had after Bush left the country in a raging dumpster fire of economic disaster and illegal war lasted all of what, 2 years, before the GOP started recovering politically. I hope we get 'transformative' in the election, but I don't expect Trump's stank to carry on influencing people in elections beyond that. Once he's gone, the last 4 years will disappear into the past and be subsumed by new matters. Indeed I'd go so far as to say it would be dangerously complacent for Democrats to treat the boosts they're getting from running against such an awful shiatstain as anything other than temporary.

The thing about the under 30 MAGAts is thst the bulk of them are the way they are because their parents and grandparents assure them that Republicans are winners and that democrats are just losers.

The Republicans get spanked hard enough, a sizable number of the young Republicans will readdress their beliefs.  Remember they are being told Trump is unbeatable, and they believd that. A loss will reveal that the emporer has no clothes.

Of course on the other hand, Trump cheats his way to a victory, then they are gonna double down on the facsism.
