(Billings Gazette)   100 Montana hunters fire into herd of elk, resulting in 50 bagged animals, six citations from game wardens, and one hunter dead from a heart attack. "We didn't write as many tickets as you'd think. Hunters were fortunate that no more elk were injured"   (billingsgazette.com) divider line

Reminds me of the "Vacation" hunters in West Texas.  You sit em down in a recliner then let loose a few deer 50 feet in front of them.  You can make bank off that.

The six cited had license problems or were shooting from a road.  In other words, this is a non-story.

I read it. Were the other 94 hbunters the required 50ft? from the road lined up like a fireing squad.
Did they syncronize watches and all fire at the same time or what.
I better go read it again.

Bob Down: "Hunters."

hunting is less of a "sport" than golf.

And remember, we HAVE to kill every wolf in the wild because they "tke too many elk" leaving poor hunters no way to feed their families.

BTW 100 hunters = a minimum of 100 rounds fired.  50 elk died.  Even assuming some were hit twice (and then how do you determine who gets the kill?)  where did the other 30-40 bullets go?

They kill them because they need culling, and then they eat them.  It is far from pointless.

I often wonder if your profile pic is actually you.  I could go either way on that.

50 elk died where their bodies could be found.

There's probably more elk walking around bleeding from newly acquired bullet wounds.

I do not know.  It seems kind of odd that 100 hunters would be at the same spot at the same time.  Was it some sort of ambush involving herding them into a bottleneck?  I have never heard of hunters using war tactics like that and the story seems strange.

A hundred guys in the woods in Montana, with guns, doesn't sound like typical hunters.  It sounds more like a militia group was out playing GI Joe and decided to open up on a herd of Elk.  It also sounds like the Gravy Seals shoot about as well as they do PT.

If they were doing this to clear a herd that was grazing the plants down to erosion danger, and if it was for meat/skins/antlers for crafting...ok.  Not sporting, but done quickly.

But if these folks were pretending it was "sport", bullshiat.  This was a planned harvest of wild meat.  If people were keeping trophies of this, that's like keeping the beak of the chicken you just strangled for making pot-pies.

You know what the park manager have discovered is nature's way of keeping Haerd of Elk and Buffalo on the move and keeping them from over grazing any particular area?

Yep. A Nearby herd of wolves.

With the WOlves around the herd move every two to three days giving grazing patches time to recover

Hunting would be better if it consisted of a survivalist pocket knife and a water filtration flask. The rest is up to you. You get dropped off on Friday, picked up on Sunday, and you only get kill for food and what can pack out.
