(Fark)   Will someone explain the face eating leopards? I think I get it in a general sense, but would like some additional depth, if possible   (fark.com) divider line

It's a political party of leopards who eat people's faces. People still vote for them, even though the entire platform of the Leopards Who Eat People's Faces party is "We're going to eat your face".

It's a metaphor for voting against your own interests. They still vote for the GOP even though the GOP does everything they can to hurt voters, including those that voted for them.

They eat faces, but they'll never eat my face, because I'm attractive and delicious.

It's a play on the old fable about the frog and the scorpion, the scorpion asks the frog for a lift across the pond, the frog says no because the scorpion will kill him, but the scorpion assures that it'll be fine because the scorpion would also die if he stung the frog. Then, in the middle of the pond, the scorpion stings the frog, the frog asks :why did you sting me if it means both of us will die," and the scorpion responds, "why would you be surprised, it's in my nature."

People get drunk.  They fall asleep.  A hyena or a wild dog comes by and eats their face.  Then they wake up and try to blame it on a leopard.  Like any self respecting leopard would find them tasty.

The Leopards Eating Peoples' Faces Party is a metaphor for voting against your self-interest. Obviously, getting your face gnawed off by a leopard is a less than desirable outcome. But, people still vote for it.

It's mostly like that, but in this case, the frog says, "I know you're a scorpion and all; but you're my scorpion, and you'll only sting those other frogs. Hop on, no questions asked!"

This, an important aspect is that the Leopards aren't hurting the right people when they eat your face.

Kid wrote a letter to Trump saying he wanted to mow the WH lawn.

Trump saw a photo op and got the kid to mow the lawn.

The "photo op" is now the meme of Trump looking like he's screaming at the kid.

And he's called "Pickle" even though his name is not "Pickle" because "Pickle" is the nickname of ANOTHER kid who supposedly wrote a love letter to the shiatgibbon and that "letter" was "read" by the Huckabeast as a supposedly "heart-warming" moment in a press briefing, but most people did not believe that that letter was real. But the pictures of the OTHER kid (the actually existing kid) mowing the WH lawn came out and at that point, THAT kid was named "Pickle" and gets yelled at by the shiatgibbon ever since in meme form.

And it has morphed into the notion that the kid is Donnie's 'kept boy' who acts as a punching bag and/or sounding board for anything that pops into Donnie's head.

See, I never got that. Why would the scorpion sting the frog BEFORE he gets what he wants? Why wouldn't he wait until the frog outlived his usefulness? It's not really a metaphor for anything but self-destruction.

Trump got what he wanted - the vote of the half-wits. He made it across the pond before he started stinging. And a lot of them are shouting "Sting me more, please, I love it!"

Because the scorpion's nature is to sting when it gets a chance and feels threatened, not to plan ahead.  Also, the scorpion can't swim, so instinct overrides reason and it stings on impulse.

It bothered me too so I looked up wiki's explanation "A common interpretation is that people with vicious personalities cannot resist hurting others, even when it is not in their interests."

My take away is that the nature of the scorpion in this case is not so much that it is vicious, but that being vicious overrides self interest.

I find myself thinking not acting in your own interests is close to unfathomable. I usually regard acting out of self-interest as the baseline for human behaviour, however it is clearly wrong to do so, as has been shown by Republicans, their number one motivation is to hurt their *enemy*. But for that I prefer "would cut off their nose to spite their face" if we are digging up old sayings.

Trump could anally rape all of his supporters with a Roto-Rooter, and as long as they thought that someone they didn't like was getting the same treatment, they'd ask for it to be done twice.

The scorpion NEVER stung out of calculation. He stings because he can't help himself. IT'S HIS NATURE. Trump has NOT YET crossed the river. He's already stinging, attacking Republican senators on the cusp (McSally, Collins, Graham), drowning Republican chances of retaining the senate. And he's been stinging all along. His followers in Omaha. The entire US with COVID-19. Anyone not in the 1% with the tax cuts. Veterans and military people at nearly every turn. People relying on affordable healthcare and government benefits. Farmers. That mofo been stinging since he got into office.

Nidiot: I find myself thinking not acting in your own interests is close to unfathomable.

People act against self-interest all the time.

See people who drown trying to save their dog.
See addicts going for the next score deapite knowing it might kill them.
See people remaining in abusive relationships because "X is actually very kind deep down and didn't mean to do that".
See someone with barely enough money for food buy a lottery ticket in the misguided idea that winning it big and having no more problems trumps buying another loaf of bread this week.

All of the above are not the same as what Republicans are doing. Republicans are actively trying to harm others and harming themselves in the process.  All of the above are self destructive but the goal is not to harm others.

It's basically a bunch of frogs, and other animals on the shore watching the scorpions kill them as they try to get across the river.  All the other animals are saying, "don't do it!".  The scorpions on the shore are saying you take me across or I kill you here.  AND the Frogs are cheering them on and helping the scorpions.

Irrelevant. The posted position was "I find myself thinking not acting in your own interests is close to unfathomable."

That has nothing to do with republicans or harming/not harming others

Valid point. I was thinking of considered or planned actions that are not influenced by love (say for the dog) or drug addiction. Abusive relationships are often a combination of mental manipulation and not having options, which (like drug addiction) doesn't put people in the best mental position for sensible decision making.

As for the lottery ticket, sometimes the chance to dream has a greater value to that person than the loaf of bread, so what we are doing is judging by our standards what their best interest is, not their standards. See also people who seek to discontinue aggressive cancer treatments that may prolong their life, in favour of palliative care.

So on the whole I tend to see people as motivated by what is going to work out well for themselves. If they are a Republican who says "I like Trump because he gave me tax cuts and I like tax cuts" I really cannot criticise them, their motivation makes sense. If they are Republican and Trump fans because they want to make sure someone else gets hurt, and they don't even care if they get hurt along the way (I'll happily have no health care if it means those black folk don't get health care), that indicates their motivation in life is to see others suffer, basically spite, which is weird and strange to me.
