Collective punishment and criticism from one side begets collective punishment and criticism from the other side. Macron is overreaching and its not going to end well. It brings up the spectre of neo-colonialism (Libya, Algeria) in northern Africa and the Middle East. It probably does not help that Turkish authorities have come to see Charlie Hebdo as an unofficial vehicle for the French government's opinion, and now have a convenient scapegoat for the breakdown over the Armenia/Azerbaijan conflict as well as the Libyan civil conflict.

For anybody living in a NATO country this is really bad.

Actually scratch that, for anybody living in any country this is really bad.

Freedom of speech means freedom of offensive speech. Inoffensive speech doesn't need protection.

(And don't even look at depictions of Jews, Israeli or not, in cartoons in large parts of the Muslim world. It's not even offensive because it's sailed right into absurd territory.)

"They literally want to relaunch the Crusades. Since the Crusades, the seeds of evil and hatred have started falling on these (Muslim) lands and that's when peace was disrupted."

Yeah, because Mehmed the Conqueror was just such a peace-loving muslim. Your country is literally the fruit born of seeds of evil and hatred.

fta: "The West was "once again headed to a period of barbarity"

They cut off a teacher's head for showing students a cartoon and Erdogan thinks its the west who are barbarians?

The fundamentalists of the world think they can stop the coming of modernity - but they can't, and they can't pick and choose what aspects of modernity they wish to embrace.
Yes, everybody's old, dear cultures and traditions are going to be disrespected and put on the same level as everyone else's bullshiat.
Sorry - I realize that it is cruel and abrupt, and culturally jarring.
But there is no getting around it. You will ALL have to accept it, in time, because wealth and technology always win.
All that you get to decide is how many people have to die over your butt hurt regarding the inevitability of change.
And this goes for all the faiths and tribes - not just the Muslims.

casual disregard: For anybody living in a NATO country this is really bad.

Actually scratch that, for anybody living in any country this is really bad.

Maybe Erdogan will use this as an excuse to pull Turkey out of NATO.

Then everyone wins!
