everybody lies to some extent.  I tell people I'm five minutes away when I'm probably more like 8 minutes away.

But attitudes like yours are--and there's no kind way of saying this--moronic.  Because even if you do think they are all pieces of garbage, they all have voting records, they all have campaign donation records, they all have published platforms, they all have tax returns (well, all but Trump), and they all have print and video interviews.  So if you're just going to be the kind of lazy schmuck that throws their hands up in the air and says "they're all pieces of human garbage" you are neglecting the fact that you actually have objective data to make your decision by.

you have objective data that you can use to figure out that even if all of them were garbage, some politicians are worse than others, and some are just absolutely abhorrent.

As far as "GenX attitude", it seems GenX has trended liberal for a long time.  So the idea that South part has "GenX values" is--and there's no kind way of saying this either--well, you know the rest.

Naido: TheCubsFan: Naido: The majority of people I talked to in 2016 weren't excited about voting for either candidate.  A lot of them were actually pissed off that the choices were so lousy.  Either they were all watching South Park, or South Park was reflecting a phenomenon that existed.

As a lifelong liberal, I wish some of you would stop saying that the solution to all of our problems is to make people shut up.

I don't think it's a matter of making people shut up, it's about getting people to look at the two parties and candidates with some nuance and why they aren't both exactly the same or equally shiatty.

If you actually watched it, which I didn't do until this year, they did.  Garrison was a complete buffoon while Hillary represented competence.  There were even episodes where he endorsed her ideas, told people to vote for her, and it just made people want to vote for him even more.

They actually did a pretty spectacular job of representing voters.  The problem is the reality, not the art that reflects it.  It's funny, I spent 25 or more years having this argument with moral majority conservatives.

I think I stopped watching the show around the time that garrison trump character was being fleshed out.  And it was actually a breath of fresh air for them to firmy take a side on something, but they had lost me by that point. Maybe I grew out of the humor too.

I didn't see it, but I'm pretty sure they revisited the same premise for 2016.

Their most damaging premise was that if you were in any way opinionated about an issue, you were an asshole because only people in the middle were smart or nuanced enough.  They visited it over and over, even trying to apply it to alcoholism (being completely sober makes you an asshole, being an alcoholic makes you an asshole, can't you just drink a little?).

Nevermind there's issues that shouldn't have a middle ground.  You should be firmly against them, and having an opinion about them shouldn't make you an asshole in matt and Trey's world.

South Park started out so well.  It was irreverent and didn't take itself seriously.  Then they really got into themselves and started with their "middle makes us better" schtick and they got real old real fast.

Skarekrough: The damage that these two did in 2016 is something that we're just starting to overcome.  Their whole "douche vs shiat sandwich" thing was such a damaging and ignorant narrative, the sort of shiat that white folks get to indulge in and have nearly no consequences for it.

It's great to want politics to work that way but just damaging to call it out when it has never worked that way and do so at the peril of an election with real consequences.

There is no shiat sandwich big enough for them to eat for that, but I guess I appreciate that they need to try and do something to make up for it.  At least they're owning it.

Oh, come on.  I find them as annoying as any Farker here, and the douche vs shiat sandwich and we are better than either side because we are in the middle schtick make me want to punch them.

But I don't think I would put 2016 on them in any significant way.  Yes, they might have influenced some votes, but there's more significant systemic and societal factors at play if your electorate takes their cues from south park.
