Ah yes.  Back in those days, the only thing I knew about Kiss was that it was "devil-worshiping" music.

I stayed up late to watch that piece of shiat. Between it and the Star Wars Holiday Special, my childhood was pretty much in tatters by the time I turned 11.

What does KISS stand for?  "Knights in Satan's Service".  Learned that during recess and "woooooah" was my third grade face expression.

when i was a little kid in the 80s, my grandpa called out my cousin for having an ac/dc shirt on.  he said it meant anti christ / devils child.

That is a very quotable movie.  It's terrible, but very quotable.

I saw this in college in 1997 or so.  It is hilariously bad.  My favorite part being Ace in his incredibly thick accent "Insufficient data at this time, Starchild!"

There's no mention in this article that the movie functions largely as a commercial for Magic Mountain.

My friend loved it. He would get high and play it over and over again.

You're looking for someone, but it's not KISS.

Way underground.

Easy Catman, they are serious.

KISS is the biggest band in the world, and we've got 'em

Be sure to get there early to get a good seat.

There are plenty of bad movies that feel like they've been directed by someone who has never directed a movie before. Phantom Of The Park is like it was directed by someone who had never seen a movie before.

Calvin: What a waste. Brilliant man. True genius.
Paul: Yup. But misdirected.
Ace: Ack.

We were taught that bullshiat in Youth Group too. (AC/DC came off of Angus and Malcom's sewing machine)  Ten years later I was going to AC/DC concerts with my pastors.

Speaking of which, they're dropping a new album this weekend.

They were hardly done by then.  They had their biggest hit (to date) after this as well as releasing Dynasty shortly after this.

I think KISS was done when they appeared on 3-2-1 Contact.

They grasped that God gave rock and roll to them. What kind of music did God give you?

I wouldn't go making fun of KISS fans if I was you. They're pretty tough. In fact, I hear they're gathering an army.

They put in an appearance in an episode of What's New, Scooby Doo? but it was apparently only Paul Stanley's actual voice.

I think Ace Frehley or the Catman was so smacked out on something they had to overdub his voice, and for some reason, they decided a fey, campy, "non-traditional" - esque voice actor was the best fit.  hilarious.

I must have seen the the thing on TV shortly after it was made.  Even at what, 8-9?, I could tell that they tried to play it straight (not sure if the editing tried to save it by playing it up for laughs) and it was hilariously bad.

They must have still put on great shows, but I don't think anyone took them nearly as seriously (i.e. on the playgrounds.  Nobody much older could have taken them seriously even before that).

CSB - My mom took me to a presentation from a grifter traveling minister about the evils of rock 'n roll. I think I would have been 12 because Ozzy's "Blizzard of Ozz" had been released a few months prior to this.

Ozzy/Black Sabbath, KISS, Led Zeppelin and many others were talked about. One I remember was that there was a rumor that the Wilson sisters from Heart were witches and lesbian lovers. They were asked about it in an interview and they started laughing.

Obviously they laughed because it was ridiculous. This minister thought it was outrageous that they laughed about such "serious" allegations. Church-going twelve-year-old me agreed. Several years later adult me understood that it was ridiculous.

/Incestuous Lesbian Witches could be a name for a Heart cover band.

Peter Criss didn't attend the ADR sessions during post production (likely due to being smacked out), so they used actor Michael Bell, also known later as Duke from the original GI Joe run.

I was like 7? The absolute perfect age to have no idea what a piece of crap I was watching. I remember just loving the intro where they demonstrate their powers. My sister was 13 and a big KISS fan - the reason why we were watching it -  she had taste though and went to her room about half an hour into it. That absolutely got me into KISS and "Shout It Loud" is still my favorite KISS song.

But the truth is, there were no special effects. The members of KISS have superpowers, duh.

I'm fairly convinced people wouldn't hate on Kiss as much if Gene Simmons wasn't such a prick. Even with all the goofy marketing.

They were a big dumb fun rock band with fireworks in the 70s. Lots of worse things happened in that timeframe.

The modern concert experience is due to KISS.  Fireworks, fire, lasers, smoke, light shows?  They did it bigger, better, and louder than anyone before them.

Living in Canada we had the benefit of watching this one two consecutive nights, once on a Canadian channel and the next night on a US one. It, to me at 9 years old, was... confusing. I later watched it drunk as a skunk in the 90s when it was on TV and it was freaking hilarious. I would HIGHLY recommend that you seek it out and watch it either drunk or high (hey, its legal in Canada now...). It's like the Citizen Kane of terrible rock movies.

"Hey, that's not Peter Criss!" or "Hey was ACE a black dude in the last scene?" The special effects were almost at a Roger Corman level of greatness.

I'd bet my house that if a producer went to Gene Simmons and offered him and the others a couple million each to do Phantom of the Park - Part 2; The Search for Starman, he would sign up in a heartbeat.

Kiss was my favorite band as a preteen (Destroyer was the first album I bought with my own money) and I was probably 10 or 11 when I watched this...so excited that they were making a movie. But compared to television programming in general during the '70's, this wasn't especially bad at the time. TV in general was crap. Very little from that decade holds up.

Marcos P: When I was a little kid I thought Kiss was scary, until I heard their music. Then I thought they were a farkin joke. Riverbottom Nightmare Band were more hardcore....

The music was besides the point.

KISS is at best a decent garage band musically.  At best I'm a mediocre rhythm guitar and bass player but I feel confident I could stand in (at least musically) in the band in those roles.

But what made them a phenomenon wasn't music with intricate solos, complex time signatures, and interesting chord progressions.  It wasn't because of them having deep, meaningful lyrics and virtuoso level singing and spot-on harmonies.

It's because of outrageous costumes and makeup, spitting blood and fire, fireworks, and massive flames on stage.

KISS is a circus sideshow on stage.   It's P. T. Barnum with amplifiers that go to 11.

That's why they were as popular as they were.
