I started to read the article, and got hung up on Bosco.  I guess they still make it, but it's in generic squeeze bottles. Totally lame.

Real blood doesn't look right on film stock, depending on the type and how it was developed. So they had to come up with what they thought would look right and hope for the best.

/of course, low-budget films just went with whatever was around.

I always thought it was a conscious artistic choice.  At least it wasn't CGI.

I was reading about Conan the Barbarian movie, and it said during the filming in cold areas, they had to use the Vodka-based fake blood. When the actors were supposed to spit blood, everyone kept just chugging it and saying they needed another application and ended up getting drunk.

Hoped to get on TV?  "Give us a lower rating, no one will believe that's real blood!"?

Kyro syrup, water and food coloring.  Good enough for Evil Dead, good enough for me.

I remember mixing up massive vats of stage blood for car crash reenactments for from season when I was working in the high schools. Every year there was a theater kid or 2 who did not understand why I tried using something besides red dye in the blood.

This was  Early YouTube when you could not find videos that were longer than a few minutes long. As a fun side project for the students I brought in copies of my favorite Kung Fu movies with their bright red blood and clips of horror movies that did the blood right.  It was a fun learning experience for my students. Unfortunately there were 2 fire departments that were mad at me for years afterwards because my blood did not come out of their 1st responder uniforms. Oops.

El Topo has lots and lots and lots of fake looking blood.

That and Dino De Laurentiis (or possibly the director, but I think it was old Dino) demand "more blood, more blood".  Everywhere except the cold area shots.  Because of the above mentioned reasons that the cast and crew were getting drunk on the blood and it kept running out.

Yeah, the ratings board was the cause for some movies.

Famously, the ratings board made Scorsese change the color of blood in Taxi Driver, or they were going to give it an X rating.  That happened to several movies that I'm aware of.

If you're a cut wondering if people cut themselves, 1: Put down the Smiths record and 2: Get help.

The "blood" in that famous shower scene in Psycho was mostly chocolate syrup. It was shot in black and white, so it didn't need to be red.

In my day, a lot of times people would get shot or stabbed and not bleed at all.  That's how tough we were.  They would crumple up and die on the floor, maybe with a little grunt of discomfort, if they were a "sensitive type".

All I care about is what Simmons' nephew thinks about this.
