A lot of court-watchers figured this was coming, when Claire Bronfman (richest family in Canada, the Seagrams fortune) got 7 years for recruiting women into this, after the prosecution only asked for 5.

Raniere's six-week trial, as well as today's verdict, will be explored in more detail in the second season of HBO's The Vow, its docuseries about the MLM and self-help cult.

Man, I'd hate to be the bottom of that pyramid scheme.

Has anybody watched the HBO documentary, The Vow? If so, what did you think?

I've watched the first two episodes of the Starz documentary, Seduced. It's good, but it also feels sort of incomplete -- it's mostly from the perspective of one person who got very deep into the organization, so it's intimate, but also narrow. She didn't even get involved until the organization had existed for 10-15 years. I'm thinking the HBO documentary might be broader. I'd like to know more about the origins, how it developed, where all these people came from, etc.

Why do Americans say "of a person", instead of "how terrible a person"? I find it most peculiar.

You wouldn't say "She was a terrible of a person", would you?

Right up until the jury hears the testimony against her and her "master".

According to the Variety story that somebody submitted with almost the exact same headline ""Battlestar Galactica" actress Nicki Clyne, who is married to "Smallville" actress Allison Mack, one of the leaders of the NXIVM cult, was spotted at the courthouse to show support for Raniere".
Normally, the thought of Nicki Clyne and Allison Mack being married would make me think of nothing else... oh, who am I kidding?  My mind is already wandering.

He woulda still had his organization that vacuums money out the pockets of weak minded people. Attracting men who cry that they don't "know how to be a man", and farking similarly broken ladies with daddy issues. But the whole harem/branding/sex slavery thing would not have happened without Salzman. He had the mind control thing but that girl knew how to haze. Be interesting to see what kind of jail time she gets.

I watched the Vow and am watching Seduced. The Vow explained how it started all good and they were helping the world blah blah blah.  Then they  figured out the dude was a creep. But the folks that were central in The Vow all managed to be successful and get rich with Nixium before they found out it was a scam.  They portray themselves as being scammed, but in Seduced you see this every same folks in the trainings where some creepy/ crazy stuff is being taught.

It may have been a moral awakening, but it also screams of getting in front of a bad story and protecting reputations.

Super Chronic: Has anybody watched the HBO documentary, The Vow? If so, what did you think?

I watched it.  I think it was 10 episodes that's could have been 6.
They spent a lot of time introducing more and more people with lots of artsy fartsy shots of rain falling in puddles and people twirling on the beach that could have been cut.

It was worth watching just to see how bat shiat insane this thing was.

It was also surprising, at least in the first couple of episodes, how normal it all seemed.
I mean I'm not a self help group kind of person but it seemed a guy learned to make a lot of money by reading and expanding on "I'm ok, You're ok"

It's not until the later episodes where you really go "Holy COW!"

The Pope of Manwich Village: [Fark user image image 425x285]

Gross.

I find people who are totally in love with themselves to be absolutely repulsive. So this guy's not only disgusting to look at because of his hair-carpet (and going by that photo, I'll bet he's got some seriously gross back hair going on as well), everything about him - his teachings, self help bullshiat, collecting, controlling, abusing, and branding women, make him utterly abhorrant on every level of the "could you like this person?" scale.

Glad they threw the book at him.

If any women out there have issues with emotional or physical trauma, see a therapist, seek professional help to deal and heal. Don't respond to the predatory advances of some religious organizations or cults that seek to draw you in with claims of getting you through the pain or healing your soul with woo therapies or bullshiat and nonsense.
