They have 30 days to comply. So take them down around Thanksgiving.

Then reassemble them a few days later for the Christmas version.

Or
"Handles unruly neighbors"

I said the same thing. Then I got a new neighbor.

Now I would gladly move to a house with strict city regulations + HOA

You again with this neighbor.  And your allergic wife right? Maybe you are the bad neighbor.  Mind blown. I know.

I think we might be missing the story behind the story here.

First, yes HOA's are pretty horrific.

But, there are a couple things that I picked up on in reading this article.  While the homeowner said nobody complained and all the neighbors loved the display, I think she is being a little naive.  At least one of those neighbor's who didn't complain to her probably went to the HOA.  That's the thing with HOA's, they enable an environment where nobody resolves any issues face to face, complainants just leverage the HOA.  I'd bet on this one.

The other thing that was interesting is that the HOA letter gave her 30 days to comply.  I'd like to think the person within the HOA bureaucracy did this on purpose.  While the bureaucracy sucks it is somewhat nice to think that someone within that framework, saw this complaint, felt it was bs and sent the letter that they had to send but giving the homeowner enough time to keep the display up until they would have taken it down anyway.  That may be naive thinking on my part but the data lines up.

But it's OK to stick an overweight pedo with housebreaking tendencies and his flea infested rats with long legs up there?

I'd still rather put up with a weird hoarder neighbor. Done it more than once already. But I'd rather not live in a "managed" Stepford-wife community that doesn't like my choice of bird feeder or threaten me with fines for a missing shingle.

That said, does being an "NFL game streaker" count as a costume?

Pretty smart on the HOA they do what the old prude who complained wanted  with out having to really enforce it as it will in all likelihood begone before the deadline.

Just speaking from personal experience, I didn't have much choice in the matter.  Not all mind you but the vast majority of subdivisions in the school district I wanted to be in have an HOA.  When it came time to house shop, finding a house I could afford in the area I wanted meant buying into an HOA neighborhood.  Years ago that wasn't the case but nowadays it seems the HOA thing is becoming more and more prevalent.  Luckily mine isn't run by a bunch of asshats.  Still wish it wasn't around though...

Yep, I agree. HOAs are kind of annoying but they can serve a purpose. I'd never live in one but I have owned rental properties in one, which is an ideal situation IMO. We sold them at a predictable price and the tenants are just wanting to live there and come and go to work. It works out. It's also a good place to buy/rent for kids going to school or if someone just wants a place to live and otherwise be unattached, kind of like a lease car.

It's ironic that HOAs theoretically try to encourage long-term homeowners but in fact they encourage more of a commoditized, "here today/gone tomorrow" mindset...because who really wants to live there long term? Not me!

HOAs are frequently used as pugil sticks but often the people on the Boards actually do have common sense and try not to make life terrible for everyone. They have to live there too.

As for "keeping dark people out", that's no longer the case. There are actually HOA neighborhoods where the residents are majority black. I visit them frequently and they're excellent clients.

How so? Yes, there are probably monthly/quarterly dues for maintenance and access to amenities like a pool in some, but other than that....it's just a neighborhood, with rules. How exactly does that keep minorities out? Is it actually in the covenants?
