One of the ways I can tell that fish oil/Omega-3 is actually good for you is that a pharmaceutical company tried to make a prescription-only version of it. Saw a commercial for it a few times on the TV, but I can't remember the name of it. I guess I'll have to ask my doctor... or something.

I take Lovaza, but I believe there might be other brands as well.

Does it do anything to help with cholesterol? Well, in my case...I talked my Dr into trying it as an alternative to statins. My triglycerides were always very high and my HDL was always too low. It did seem to have some impact on my numbers, but still not enough on it's own. My Dr pushed again to start me on a statin. Instead, I changed my diet (reduced my simple carb intake/increased fiber intake and ate more foods with unsaturated fats/omega-3 content) and started working out 3x/week. That had the effect of dropping 40lbs and it brought all my lipids numbers into acceptable ranges.

Here's my numbers from that time. I started Lovaza after one of those 2016 tests (probably the first, but I'm not 100% certain), and I started working out in November of 2017. By March 2018 I was down 40lbs.
