They're different demographics. Popeyes is more African American while CFA is lifestyle brand for malls and fake Christians. The food, especially the sandwich, is far better at Popeyes.

I'm literally the whitest person I know and Popeyes beats CFA every day of the week and twice on sundays.

Zaxby's is the best chicken, IMHO. BoJangles' is good too. Popeye's isn't bad, and neither is Chick fil A

What Chick Fil A has over the others is a much more efficient drive through process. It's like a military operation*. I'd rather go to Zaxby's, but unless I get there right as they open, chances are the line will be wrapped around the building. With Chick fil A, you can go when they're really busy and still get through fairly quickly.

*Onward, chicken soldiers.

I've eaten both of them for most of my life and never even thought about them as substitutes.

Popeye's is generally much better, but they can be hard to find (fact: they do buy cheap real estate). I go there for some spice, and to eat a "real meal" with some variety. So addictive. Best fast food fried chicken on the market.

CFA is quick, easy, and everywhere. The food is okay, but they do so much community support -- especially schools -- it feels almost like a charity fundraiser to eat there. Plus they have the most efficient and friendly staff in the fast food business.

well, don't stop into the one in Altoona, PA.
It is staffed by the whitest people you will meet.
No pride in fried chicken there

Popeyes is better by a good bit but they absolutely SUCK at service. I'm rolling the dice every time I go there while CFA is a model of efficiency. KFC is the worst of both worlds.

Never again.

I've still never had a Popeyes chicken sandwich because every time I've been to a Popeyes they are either out or it a 30 minute wait. Its like they are surprised they have customers and don't prep any food ahead of time even right before a rush.

Guthrie's is the OG Zaxby's, literally. I remember reading that Zaxby worked there at one point, then basically recreated it on his own with a lot more liberal franchising policies. There was a lot of bad blood. But to this day, I still see a Zaxby's and have a visceral reaction of "sellout/knockoff"

I realize we're supposed to be virtue signaling our disdain of the homophobic CFA and our love of the "urban" Popeye's, but Popeye's is really erratic in terms of quality control.  Good Popeye's beats the best CFA, but CFA is very consistent location by location, whereas many Popeye's are terrible, with old oil covered up with gallons of salt.  If you find a good Popeye's, treasure it.

/travel about 75% of the time for work, even now.

THIS.  Guthrie's is like a Zaxby's with a spice blend that's not just "salt, salt, and a sprinkling of pepper".  A Gutbox is the best chicken meal around.

The original Popeyes location was located in the most racist white trashiest section of New Orleans.  A placed called Arabi, Louisiana.

The owner, Al Copeland, used to run a donut shop(Tastee Donuts) and practice his recipes in the donut grease at night for the chicken.

Sure, Chic-Fil-A may be homophobic. But Popeye's promotes toxic masculinity by teaching children that women are objects to be won in fist fights.

Do they fry their chicken in Olive Oyl?

I only ever went to Popeyes once.  They lost my order for like half an hour, and then when I finally did get it, it was monumentally disappointing.  I hardly got anything in my side orders, and the chicken was definitely not worth the wait.  So f**k Popeyes.

The quality control and customer service at CFA is top notch, but I just don't understand anyone thinking the food is anything beyond mediocre.

I think it also benefits from people irrationally assuming it's a healthier option simply because it's chicken.  This is anecdotal, but I remember a conversation at work where someone was professing their love for CFA because it was the "healthiest fast food."  I imagine that's a pretty common line of thinking.

The popeye's sandwich is not only better, its bigger and a better value.  Each time I've gotten one it's been 1.5-2x the size of a typical chic-fil-a sandwich.

I hear that a lot, too. It's weird...their actual "healthy" food like wraps are among the worst I've ever had. They're really only good at basic fried chicken and even then, my patties range in size from 2-3 oz to, if I'm lucky, 5-6 oz. It's all over the place.

I also used to accuse CFA of being way overpriced, but most fast food is crazy expensive now.

The main problem I have with a comment like this is when somebody says "I went there once and didn't like it, so never again."

So first of all I don't doubt your anecdote at all. I've had plenty of bad meals at chains I normally think I like. Sometimes there are just plain bad locations where I wonder how they can stay in business; well, they have a drive-thru so any traveler weary for a quick and moving meal might get suckered into it. But the bad ones don't always seem to be in locations that support that logic and sometimes the good ones are a bit far-flung.

But writing off hundreds or even thousands of locations for a single bad experience or even three or four bad experiences in as many locations seems suspect. Somebody up thread said that if you can find a good Popeye's then treasure it, and I wholeheartedly agree. The one near me is pretty bad but the one on the way to my dad's house is quite good. Chik-fil-a is really no different but they seem to streamline their menu and training to the point that you always get the same experience (whether you like it is up to your personal taste).

NONE of these chains are pillars of either health or fine dining. So yeah it's particularly egregious when I have to wait 30+ minutes for food that is not only not fresh but where my order is flat out wrong. There are definitely LOCATIONS that I would avoid but there's few places I would avoid when I want something that's supposed to be fast and effortless on my part.

i personally want a super crispy and seasoned chicken sandwhich to feature mayo, lettuce, and good tomato, hold the pickles and cheese, on a tender brioche (or soft egg dinner roll) style bun.

but i feel like CFA charges a lot for a dry and naked sandwich, with a side of fresh corporate hate.....

i've eaten it twice. liked the waffle fries. no reason to go back though.

I really don't eat much fast food; maybe once a month. My kids love, love, love CFA. When the Popeye's chicken sandwich came out they begged me to get some for everybody. So I get a bag of these things and bring them home. They raved about how awesome they were. It was ok, but very big and heavy tasting.

I don't think the kids have ever been back to Popeye's. But I see on my credit card statement that they still love CFA.

I might be high. No idea why I typed all of that.

I went to college at Georgia Southern University (Statesboro, GA), where Zaxby's began. I got to eat there when they literally only had 2 locations. It's not the same restaurant at all now. They have a lot of the same things, but ever since they went corporate, it's such crap.

Scorpitron is reduced to a thin red paste: They're different demographics. Popeyes is more African American while CFA is lifestyle brand for malls and fake Christians. The food, especially the sandwich, is far better at Popeyes.

Popeye's is using their success from the chicken sandwich fiasco to start putting locations in the areas they wouldn't build in before. There's one currently under construction about a mile from where I live, and it's a pretty upscale, heavily white area. Can't wait until I don't have to drive 25-30 minutes anymore.

You get one chance at a first impression.

I've only been to Popeyes a few times while traveling. No locations near me. Each time the food was good, better than CFA, and the service good with a wait typical for how busy it was at the time.

For CFA both the mrs and I grew up in the north where it wasn't really a thing. I lived in the south for a while, and liked it while I was there, so one time we're in Florida we hit the CFA drive through. They tell us we need to wait for the fries, so we wait. It was late and not busy, so we just sit in the car at the window.

After a few minutes we get our order and drive off. You can probably guess the end of this story.

No fries in the bag.

mrs mcmnky will never go CFA again.

/a few years after that CFA opened near us, been there twice, both times the chicken was very mediocre
//don't know if it's a bad location or CFA in general is overrated
///if you want better chicken than CFA and more consistent service than Popeyes, go to Wendys

The thing about the Popeye's sandwich is, it tastes exactly like the rest of their chicken. So unless I'm on the road and need something I can hold in one hand, I'd just as soon get a chicken dinner and skip the bun.

I feel like even as as person who hates cooking that I could do up a better sandwich than you got there.
