Gilligan's Island theme? Could be the Pirates of the Caribbean theme instead, except that would be cool.

Gross has a long history of not playing well with others. Pimco barely survived pushing him and his ego out the door but is probably a better company now.

OTOH, what the heck is wrong with the sculpture? Not really my taste but this seems overwrought.

It's not the sculpture, it's apparently the net put up to protect the sculpture.

Maybe it's just me, but blown glass doesn't seem like the correct medium for an outdoor display.

The sculpture isn't the problem apparently, its the net they put up to protect it.

if i had a pewter baby shark with frickin' lazer beams as a sculpture on my front yard i would be so happy. and i think it would piss off Ms. Leaf Blower with the Rump sign across the street. only lawn in the entire neighborhood with no leaves on the lawn.

The pictures don't do Chilhuli's work justice. They're farking amazing. That installation looks like shiat. If I had a million dollars worth of Chilhuli glass, I sure as fark wouldn't leave it sitting outside on a gravel bed. That guy needs a punch in the dick.

I like the sculpture.  The netting looks awful.  I would build a privacy screen on that side anyway.  There's not much of a view other then a hotel.  And it would block Bill Gross' view into the pool area.

A cold snap, or the sun coming out from clouds could be enough to shatter one.

Beautiful but outdoors sounds like a risk you would only take if you were willing to loose it.

I would have to move if my neighbour had that sculpture.  The urge to shoot a bb gun or fling a rock with a slingshot at all that glass would be unbearable.  I wouldn't be able to sleep.

2020-10-26 5:41:46 PM
Wow, rich people can be assholes.

That said, Gross is so clearly in the wrong here it's not funny. That sculpture doesn't belong outside if it can be easily damaged, so the idea that the neighbor might have thrown a rock is irrelevant. Outside of that one, unprovable act, Gross has taken upon himself to annoy his neighbors by constantly violating actual codes as well as simply being a bad person.

I loves me some Chihuly.  Long before I knew the sculptor's name I was calling it Cthulhu glass because of the long tentacle-like pieces he often uses.  When I found the sculptor's name I thought it was hilarious how close it is to Cthulhu.  Cant imagine what that piece costs.
He does make garden sculptures but I thought they were just for public places and temporary installation.  I would think they need to be protected. In the picture I don't see anything protecting it so who knows what the neighbor is pissed off about.
I think the sculpture is gorgeous and the fight would be me constantly going on the neighbor's lawn to be closer to it.

I live in a middleclass neighborhood where houses start ~$600,000. Not Brentwood Park by a long shot, but people here have enough money to get petty if so inclined and there are the usual expectations that come with living in such a neighborhood: Keep your lawn cut, bring your garbage can in after pick-up, don't leave auto parts strewn across your front lawn, etc. Basic stuff.

Last year my neighbor took down her 3 season sun room. The pile of debris still sits in her back yard where it has for 18 months. I suppose a mess like that might bother some people, it's a 15'x15' pile of tangled aluminum siding, cinderblocks, and wood after all, but I've found a simple solution: I mind my own fu*king business. If I don't like the way it looks I simply look somewhere else, like my own yard where my opinions actually matter. The people in this story should do likewise.

"$100,000 in damage" Yeah. Sure, bud. Maybe not leave your fragile, expensive objets d'art  outside to get torqued by the wind or hit by literally any low-density, high-hardness object that could get carried by a stiff breeze. "It must have been vandals; people upset with the nature of the artwork!"

Maybe the art glass lost a lot in photography...but what overrated junk with a name attached.

I'd rather put out 20 random bongs. The 'art' world has been _insane_ for many decades. No clothes.

From the neighbors side, that could appear to be a cement wall with a whole lot of penises sticking up from it. They should just consider it a conversation piece, and if anyone asks, just say it belongs to the dick next door.

Hire someone to surround the sculpture in Plexiglas, put up temporary supports, and encase the fragile glass sculptures in clear plastic resin. A giant plastic block should protect that.

But first, figure out how to describe that to the city so you can get the proper permits.

Keep pretending that pirate Chihuly actually makes his own art, he sketches some stuff out then gets the galley slaves to do the work.....

That being said, he is a good example for replacing your vintage car windscreen with safety glass.

The sculpture looks pretty cool, but if you put it in an unprotected outdoor location, for that matter any outdoor location, you're pretty much an idiot.

/Why don't California brush fires ever take out these neighborhoods?

I like it..It's an underwater theme..I think he should use a glass wall to protect it..It would go with the house,
and make it look like the sculpture was in an aquarium!

That netting doesn't look to me like it would that great of a job protecting it and could do a great deal of damage if it were to collapse upon the sculpture or rather art installation to identify what it is properly given it is not sculpted in the traditional sense.

That's the ride you need to ride at DL or WDW since it is a classic but you pray to God that the ride does not break down while you are on it or you would hear that song for a while.
