Up until now, studies commissioned by The Vatican indicated that black kids were perfectly happy getting molested by white clergy, but they've grown skeptical in recent years.

Right.  A lot of Americans seem to forget that there's a whole lot of world out there that isn't US.

Indeed, Pope Francis shouldn't stop here, he should appoint many more.

We've had African cardinals since the 60s.  The college of cardinals was only formally named/established ca 800, so depending on how you want to define 'African', there were high-ranking priests from the African portions of the Roman Empire way back in antiquity.

But let's face it, there aren't that many African-American Catholics.

NPR this morning said that Francis has now appointed a majority of the cardinals eligible for the conclave, which bodes well for those hoping to avoid a conservative remission with the next conclave.

People always seem to mix up African-American (which is a historical group with shared history akin to Italian-American or Chinese-American) with race. Using the term "African-American" to refer to someone outside of the United States is ridiculous. I'm not sure "black" is the preferred nomenclature (probably best to ask someone what they prefer) but I think it's the best we have outside of the geographically correct but misleading "African" or the neutrally charged but so out of fashion to be considered offensive "coloured."

The Church moves these guys around so it's possible to be an African-American prelate outside of America.
