It always annoyed me that Mirror Universe conflated sexy with evil while the prime universe was good and chaste.

On the other hand, any excuse for Michelle Yeoh in a leather catsuit.

As a young child I was deeply scarred by the Star Wars father Holiday Special. The images of Chewbacca's father getting his cyber rocks off to Diane Carrol and Maud singing in dive bar have left me incapable of appreciating or even accepting any mashup of science fiction and Christmas.

I watched, but only barely.

It's such a contrived setting. Kind of fun I guess...

Kirk's and Sulu's legs need to be switched around. Kirk is standing like a ballerina.

Ya it's basically shiatty writing that appealed to the way people thought things should be in the 60's. It says a lot about current Star Trek writers that they don't see that and continue what is really an unimportant detail to the story.

Bring back the Yangs and the Kohms, there's a nice dose of racism in there too. Redoing original series episodes always brings in the viewers, right? Lt T&A only goes so far.

DS9 went to that well way too often. The Mirror Universe is best as a one-shot, like they did it on TOS and ENT.

Captain James T. Kirk kind of blows that whole "chaste" theory out of the water.

It wasn't about sexy=evil, it was about power and abusing it for personal gain. In that context, sex was just another form of exploitable power.

Counterpoint: I'm growing to like the character and she represents a welcome pragmatism to reign in Starfleet's sometimes ridiculous idealism. I guess she's going to play the part of Tyr in this season's remake of Andromeda (which isn't a bad thing - that show deserves to be redone better).

Plus I really do like Michelle Yeoh as an actress.

If you continue on any of the TOS episodes with more than just the core idea, for instance in this case the they can't keep it in their pants aesthetic to prove their evil, you'll quite quickly find they're all bad. The show is built on a series of caricatures and stereotypes.

The TOS is only enjoyable when you remember that the stories decency might be separate from it's presentation. A good story stands the test of time, but presentation often doesn't. Star Trek's writers have decided to keep the presentation of the mirror universe instead of finding something beyond that.

Though personally, I believe the mirror universe should have been left in the TOS.

Now will hallmark get off their asses and make Excelsior and/or Enterprise B?!  Its the last major ship not made.  Good lord, they made the scorpion fighter from Nemesis before Excelsior.

"Gene Roddenberry approved of the idea of the 'pleasure planet' but wanted to radically change Risa's culture to incorporate extremely graphic depictions of homosexual behavior, which Rick Berman advised Behr to ignore."

I really want to be mad at Berman here but pragmatically speaking he was probably right: the censors are there to protect from reprisals by the sponsors.

So, yes, chaste.

(Side note: one of my favorite episodes from the first season of TNG is Arsenal of Freedom, in which a horny Dr. Crusher is sending signals that Capt. Picard just ignores. I found the sexual frustration funny)

Maybe, but at least they knew what they were serving up. Rom was excellent in the Ferengi one. He spends the whole episode doing meta-commentary on how silly and inconsistent the whole "Mirror Universe" premise is, then sabotages the Klingon command ship, and then has a whole scene farking around with Mirror Garak's insecurities while his plan unfolds.

I'm a lifelong Trekker and I've got the costume pips to prove it. I never liked any aspect of the mirror universe. Most alternate universes where there were "doubles" leave me yawning.

It was in the last season. Ezri was actually not annoying in that episode.

I thought the part where they were "sneaking" around with a cloaked cloaking device was pretty funny.

The more I'm reading about Roddenberry's vision of Star Trek, the more it sounds a slightly less nihilistic version of Rick & Morty. Now I has a sad that he isn't around to see that show.
