The California Democrat clinched the votes for another term as speaker in 2018 after promising that she would step aside by 2022

Subby can't read.

Not subby, but that author can't report. 2022 was never set in stone. In fact, I believe anything past 2021 held a ~ton~ of stipulations in that deal that are likely to be violated.

Pinche Mateo: She's on the Strom Thurmond plan.

Would have to hang in there another 20 years to get there.  But she's 80 FFS.  Is there truly no Democrat in the House smart, strong, wily, etc. enough to take over or is she just that conceited to think she's the only one capable.
Tell me again why term limits and mandatory retirement ages for politicians and judges are wrong...

This seems like worrying about nothing.  Let's worry about this when it's time to actually make the selection.

She and DiFi will retire within the next couple of years. As long as they don't insist on not prosecuting Trump I am cool.

As much as I appreciate Pelosi's leadership, I think she should step aside and spend the next term or so grooming and teaching..

Because she has proven to be an utter failure during two Republican presidents' criminal tenures that borders on complicity in its consistent incompetence and fecklessness?

No, it must be cuz everybody's a buncha h8rs.

Good thing nothing bad happened as a result of a geriatric judge putting her brand before the life of the country.

Whatever you think of her politics, the woman can get a whip count like no other speaker in the last 30 years.

Personally, I am more bothered by the possibility of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer if/when we take back the Senate.

We need majority leader who will gleefully tell the Republicans to go fark themselves, like Senate Majority Leader Elizabeth Warren.

Chuck Schumer will still think, "I can work with Mitch and the others".

Also: casual reminder that the last revolt against Pelosi as speaker was because she was too liberal and that the party needs a blue dog to take over to better represent the country if you think "if only Pelosi was gone things would get fixed."

People often overlook that the 2022 date was pushed on her by the right wing flank of the Democratic party, and that her replacement is most likely going to be more conservative than she is.

We need leadership in both houses that actually cares about the future of the country and the planet more than representing the donor class.

When I see that, I expect to see them at the court crying about how their rights were violated, and the judge then stating "well, you DID tempt them with that statement, now didn't you?"

Okay. It will further strenghten K Street and ramp up the current kleptocratic tendancies of the members of Congress to new, unplumbed depths. What Congress person would want to upset K Street when that person will be their boss when their term is up?

The problem is the only way out of our problems is less people and less consumerism.  No economic policy can change that.

I came here to say exactly this. he is spineless and not what the Democrats need to show real leadership. I would happily let Nancy keep her speaker seat if that was what it took to make sure Chuck Schumer is not majority leader come2021.

It would really be nice if the old guard would step aside, especially or at least those in safe districts.  I'd like term limits - 3 terms senate, 5 terms congress, and something for the supreme court although I don't know what that should be.  2 eight year terms?

My neighbor suggested we change the presidency to a one year term but 5 years.  At first I was like wuuut but then it started to grow on me.  If you can only serve one term, you might be encouraged to actually serve in the interest of the country instead of your own re-election.

Because not everyone feels the way you do?

If Nancy is 218 Reps' top choice, why should her age or tenure prevent her from doing a job her colleagues feel is a good one? Why should we necessarily have someone in the job with less experience at it, especially for a moment when we need a savvy operator in the role of Speaker?

// if you want to replace the Speaker, maybe start by replacing some of those 218+ supporters
// chances are better you can vote for a Rep who isn't Pelosi than one who is
// and FTR I'd also like to see a new Speaker; I just think that demand should come from the House conference, not the equivalent of a zero-tolerance policy for age and experience

Because the institutional knowledge of how to get things done is cast to the only group of people who aren't beholded to voters, lobbyists.

"I don't have to try to build a coalition with you. You're done in a year."

It sets the nation into an even worse path than the one we are on~

She's a good speaker, she should stay. That said, the Dem leadership is way too old, all the way around. When Schumer, at 69, is basically the youngest of the leadership roles in the party, you've got a problem. Time for some of these folks to step aside for younger members. It's dangerous to not have a good succession plan.

And look where her legacy has led.. she could have retired an old respected lady when democrats controlled the senate and the whitehouse, guaranteeing her legacy lived on with a younger version of her self on the court.. but no. She couldnt see clear to step aside. And now its going to be 6-3 conservative rule for the next 20 years at least. Theres a bunch of oldies that should be long gone, Pelosi, Shumer, McConnell, Grassley, Feinstein. D or R theres a bunch of ancients in congress that need to go.

It's never the wrong time to discuss removing incompetent leadership.

2020-10-26 10:06:00 AM
What's the problem, exactly?  It's not as though she can't do the job, and if someone else wants the seat they can compete with her for it.  Besides, even if the worst happens and she dies in office, it's not as though the Republicans would get to just appoint someone to take her place.  Why shouldn't she try to stay in the role, other than "she should let somebody else have a turn"?

Let me explain to you why you are SO completely and utterly wrong about that.

COVID-19 caused there to be less people and WAY less consumerism.  And THAT is what got us into the mess we are currently in.

You cannot digger a deeper hole in an effort to get out of it.

It's close to Halloween and some of those Republicans are wearing costumes.
