My heart pains for Lebanon.
They need to realize that external parties will not solve their issues if they don't solve them themselves.

Lebanon is a microcosm of the world where most of the world's players have a finger in the pie; Americans, French, Russian, Iranian, Saudi, etc. I'm just surprised that China hasn't started/funded a party there.

Lebanon is my barometer to how things are going in the world.

Lebanon is an example of how different Middle-Eastern tribes/sects/religions don't make a single unified stable nation. And you can see this all over the Middle-East.
Political leaders from each sect/tribe/religion have maintained their power and influence, protecting the interests of the communities they represent. Lebanon even has a "special" political system (link) based on sectarian interests which was put in place to try and make it work with all the different tribes/religions.
Lebanon was becoming a failed state before the Beirut blast with the economy collapsing, the massive corruption and mismanagement and of course foreign interference. It was basically becoming a puppet state of Iran with Hezbollah trying to take over the government.

The explosion left 300,000 homeless? Holy crap. It was clear from the pictures that it was pretty bad but I had no idea that it was this bad.

It was opposite downtown. There are a couple of videos from the apartments people were living in.
A whole bunch of apartment buildings there.
I received videos of the hotel I stayed in when there. Shattered.
A close friend not only had his windows blown out, but even had his apartment door blown off its hinges!

Forced perspective makes it look massive. Looking at the base give a better idea of size. Impressive in any case.
