I knew Dr. Facilier being dragged to hell was going to be on that list. That's an underrated movie, and Facilier's song is among the best.

The Secret of NIHM?  Oh yeah.  Particularly when that huge spider nearly eats Mrs. Brisby..then is effortless crushed by the Great Owl, who could have decided to have her for a snack at any time.

Labyrinth scared the fark outta me when I was a kid.  We watched it in elementary school.  Wtf!  Not a movie for 8 year olds.  I'm still traumatized.

Yet I watched Rocky Horror when I was 5-6 with no problems.  Probably the singing, dancing, overly fabulousness of it.  The "villain" wasn't all that evil, and he was dressed in lingerie.

/Pfft so what he cooked a guy
//don't call yourself Meatloaf if you don't wanna be dinner
///yes I know Labyrinth is PG

Bambi, The Brave Little Toaster, and The Land Before Time all wrecked me as  a kid.  I can't quite remember why (other than Bambi) since it's been over 30 years now (fark, I'm old.), but the fact that they still stick with me after all this time says something, I think.

2020-10-26 6:28:10 AM
I think they wound up making more "Land Before Times" by the 90's than all the Jurassic Parks until present time.  It was the original LBT that sticks in my brain to this day.

I know its PG, but the scariest thing I ever watched when I was a kid was Superman III.

Not the whole movie, just the robot scene. That shiat farked me up.

And I somehow managed to watch Alien, The Thing, Poltergeist, The Terminator, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th all before the age of 6.

IIRC the rating changed a couple of times during its release. It still is a master lesson in restraint in a horror movie.

My then four year old mother was so upset by Bambi's mother getting killed she would never see another Disney movie ever again, which kind of sucked in the 1940s.

Our daughter loved Milo and Otis so much that we not only did she name our now 10 year old orange tabby Milo but she watched it so often the DVD burned out.

The flying monkeys in Wizard of Oz freaked me out on our 17 inch color TV.

I remember reading somewhere that they intentionally upped the scary factor because they were trying to get a PG rating so it wouldn't be perceived as "just a kids' movie."  Apparently they were very surprised when the movie received a G rating.

The Andromeda Strain was rated G and had nudity in it.

From IMDB:
One shot of topless woman lasting 8 seconds at it zooms up showing full breasts and nipples. Another shot of nude males from the back.

Regardless of rating, I recall this being more depressing and morbid than scary. Not a kid's movie, really.

With TLBT, it's the same as with Bambi: the mother's death is traumatizing. Everything's going fine and then wham, 20 minutes in and a T-Rex murders her in a gruesome fight atop an erupting volcano. And during the whole thing Littlefoot and Cera are in constant, imminent danger.

Also, Ducky is horrific.

/ Rewatched it several times recently with my 4 year old.
// I'd forgotten how excellent the score is. It's James Horner.

The Secret of NIMH revealed/created my fear of drowning at age 5.  So that one will always top the list for me, even decades later.

My guesses were NIHM and The Last Unicorn.  Very surprised The Last Unicorn didn't make the cut, but I guess not that many people remember it.

Maximilian was terrifying.  And he kills a man onscreen.  In a Disney film.

G and PG-rated movies in the 1970s and 1980s got away with a lot that the MPAA wouldn't allow today.

This. I haaaaaated this movie because of this character as a kid.

The point is to reminisce and think of movies that scared us as kids.
