How many people are they losing a month again?

There's lots of great VR products out there without the stank of facebook's desperation baked into to them.

I feel happy that tethering Facebook to the headset is exactly the giant fustercluck we all predicted it would be.

It's one of the classic blunders.  Never get involved in a land war in Asia, never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line, and never buy a gods-be-damned thing from Facebook, Inc.

Or, just don't buy any Oculus at all so you won't look like a ridiculous toolbag.

Serious question for VR types:

I only see out of my left eye.  Is there a monovision VR set?  Obviously I'm not going to get stereoscopic depth, but the telepresence -- looking and moving around -- still has value.

skyotter: monovision

Apparently that's not the word.  Monocular vision.

I'll try mine tonight and get back with you in 4 hours if nobody else gets there first.

Arm-chairing this one:  I imagine its more of finding a VR set that lets you turn off one of the eyes' displays.  Like I bet it'd work per-say regardless, but its working twice as hard as you need.

I thought the Facebook account was only required for software updates?

morg: I thought the Facebook account was only required for software updates?

(not well tuned in to this situation, but lemmie paint you a picture on why that's not sustainable)

Without software updates you will inevitably run into a situation where your pre-existing use-case applications release a version that requires something that's only available in one of those facebook-account tied software releases.  IE in this continuous release model of software development its getting harder and harder to find a spot where all your software co-exists and none of it changes in a way where it can do so without leaning on the updates in other components, like the zuckerberg derived drivers/software driving your oculus.

/my first real sour taste of that was successfully holding back win10 updates until my attempt to install a later Nvidia driver for my GPU insisted on needing a newer version of win10 before it'd install

Ask trans people/sex workers who have an alter-ego untethered to their physical identity for safety purposes.

FB gave them the banhammer.  FB is an identity mining app.  If an app is free, then you're the product.

Yet another reason, albeit not the most pressing, to never use anything connected to Facebook.

Was curious about the current state of VR after MS Flightsim and Star Wars Squadrons came out. It looks like there are two dominant companies and no real competition on the horizon - it's either HTC or Oculus . I quickly surmised that the Oculus was out due to the idiotic Facebook requirements.

/didn't buy, won't spend like that on a toy

There is the HP Reverb which is built on Microsoft and Valve tech. We just ordered them at work for surgical training sims.

Quest user here, also with the 2-year leave. I really wouldn't put it past FB if, like, six months from now, they change their minds on the 2 year thing and will give you another three months to get a FB account OR ELSE.

/still keeping my eye out for another all-in-one VR solution like the Quest NOT made by FB/Oculus

2020-10-25 8:33:31 PM

morg: I thought the Facebook account was only required for software updates?

Not so.

Sure, Facebook claims that, but then they also tie your software purchases to your Facebook account, and if you cancel the account, you can't play your own software any more. They've also been shutting down headsets because people opened new Facebook accounts only for the headset (and never put anything on the accounts). New account, no content updates from you? Let's just brick that $300 headset...

People have also pointed out that not only does it keep track of what you play, the Quest 2 has the capability to detect how you react to things while wearing the headset, so it's an even bigger bonus for advertising data.

I have a Rift, and Oculus Go, and an Oculus Quest, all bought before these new policies. I won't be buying any more VR hardware from Facebook.

(I should be getting my new HP Reverb G2 in the next couple of weeks. More expensive, but a better headset, and nothing to do with Facebook.)

All you need to know about the idiocy that is Oculus is asking them how to install the software on a partition other than C:/.    Their answer was, at the time, "you cannot".

It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that social media access is now mandatory for a piece of hardware that the customer paid for.  It's almost as stupid as the GeForce "Experience".

I don't know if that would work. Our stereo vision is based on the offset between the eyes, and that's how the VR sets work as well, just like ViewMasters and stereoscopes.

I hope the people who try it get different results, but I'm guessing with no depth perception it won't work.

The telepresence absolutely works, and there's more to depth perception than stereoscopy.

I love the idea of the Quest, but hate what seems like an unreliable company that can change the rules and will. I don't even really care about my data a whole lot.

This kind of thing, and Facebook's generally poor customer service record, really turn me off.

Smackledorfer: Can you create a FB account that has all fake info? Name, dedicated email, old laptop with nothing to mine, etc?

Yes. You can also create multiple accounts for yourself with different email addresses, too. I created a second one for myself back when I had to demo software that tied into Facebook, so I had a "work me" and "personal me" on Facebook. The work me is actually still there, but I no longer have access to the email I used to set it up and I'm forgotten the password, so I can't even shut it down anymore.

I think that's been a big-turn off for me as well in general with this new-wave method of umbrella tech companies.  I'll get into some product made by company X, but then "umbrella farkwit company" consumes them and before long I find my beloved product/service is being made to kiss the umbrella company's ugly STD-infested ecosystem in a forced marriage that ruins what made company X's product in the first place...and I'm out.

Yeah, any thought of getting an Oculus was stopped cold by this.  Facebook already has infinite problems with customer service.  I'm not tying ANY hardware to a company that hidden behind the curtains.

That's a hard rule.  Not gonna change that one.

If I remember correctly, FB requires a phone number to set up as they text you an authorisation code, and they wont accept a bogus/throw-away google number.

There's no VR set with explicit monovision. But there's no reason you can't use a normal VR headset; it will still work, you just won't see the image in one of the screens.

Yah, still the point stands that resorting to using soft and hard links on your file system to get around the inept programming abilities of a multi-billion dollar _software_ company is ludicrous.  Facebook's only component developers were gone the day he stole their code back in college.  Code-bros and frat parties since.  Crush themselves some code, indeed.
