Interesting read.
I wonder if they didn't want him to see the injector.
They may have come up with a proprietary solution.

So 24 months from now we'll know, perhaps, if the shot made him sick. Since it's unethical to intentionally infect someone with a lethal virus, we won't know if the shot protected him, or if he just avoided exposure to it.

Even 24 months to an actual vaccine would be record-breaking.

Medical ethics aren't quite that simple

It could also be because they don't want them to know what they got and if the vaccine is day glow oranges it would be hard to miss.

That's why there are 30k+ participants in each trial, and they don't end until enough people do get sick to form a statistical sample.

One of the more dangerous things Trump has done with his politicizing of the process is to undermine trust. But while it's possible that a safe vaccine will never be found, or not for years, it's also possible that one of these candidates is safe and effective. The entire world will be getting data from these trials in the coming months, and will be pouring over it together.

I assumed it was because he told them he was afraid of needles and it was probably a big needle. They don't want someone puking or passing out or backing out of the study.

This guy did not sound well informed.

A friend of mine is on the Pfizer trial. He said the second injection rocked his world. Said he had never felt like that in his life and it lasted 24 hours. Pfizer said it was the expected reaction.

It may also have been marked or coded in some way that could allow people to work out who got the vaccine and who got the placebo.  Depending on the level of the trial it might not be fully blinded

Those are possibilities too.
I can just see them coming up with an injector to make the price go up.
He certainly got the real vaccine, judging by the adverse reaction.
Will that reaction be bad enough to kill it or will it just be a warning is the question.
Tetanus and the flu vaccines are well know to make your arm sore, just not to that extent.

Yes, yes, doom and gloom and all that...

My stepdaughter was going to do it. And she changed her mind after I told her that they asked for me to not have kids. That scared her away.

Like, ever?

How is that record breaking? Obama had the Bird flu vaccine done in 6 months.

Apparently intelligence was not one of the things they got tested on. Well he seems like the type to head to a superspreader event. Let's see what happens!

Having working in clinical trials management, there is no f*cking way in hell I would ever allow someone I cared about to participate in a clinical trial.  From the CRO (management) to the sponsors to some of the clinical site MDs, I have never seen so much goddamn corner cutting in my life.

At least in some trials, they select a placebo that has a similar reaction as they observed in the phase 1 trials.
