That's what happens when you buy up any potential competition to your core market.  At some point it is no longer monetarily sound to keep those brands alive.

Usually it happens in the first year after the purchase.  But overall, not out of the norm for big business.

If Dasani "water" is on that list, it's a mercy killing for the rest of us.

To be clear, some of those so-called "brands" are obscure "brand extensions" like Diet Coke Feisty Cherry.

Others are entire product lines like Odwalla.

Sprite is on the list? That doesn't seem right

I never had heard of that one. Tab was the only on the list I had seen.
Lots of regional stuff it seems.

They're mostly larger brands that can themselves be "extended," but some are just individual flavors.

Coca-Cola Life surprises me somewhat because when they did their big packaging redesign a few years ago, the green for Life seemed to be a major impetus for the whole thing (red for the main Coke brand, silver for Diet Coke variations, black for Zero Sugar, green for Life). I read a portion of a recent analyst call, and they seem to be as fixated now on "Coca-Cola Energy" as they were previously on Life.

They're not dropping "Sprite," they're dropping "Sprite Lymonade," which is the original drink "plus a splash of lemonade." Original Sprite contains no fruit juice, just citric acid.  The product they're dropping had lemon juice in it.

As for quantity, remember that Coca-Cola sells in more than 200 countries, and claims to offer more than 500 brands worldwide and 800 "varieties" in the US.  Including Dasani, which isn't going anywhere.

A long time ago, I worked at a store that sold Odwalla drinks. That was good stuff - it's a shame Coke didn't just sell off the brand.

Ever been to one of the Coke Museums?  You can sample a bajillion different sodas they make for local markets.  My favorite off-beat one was a pear soda for the South American market.

Given the legal hurdles the Syrup movie went through, there is no way Max Barry's best novel gets made in to a movie.

The middle east Coke consumption style is...strange to western tastes. They drink it at room temperature (80ish F). It burns.

As long as I can still get lime Coke. That stuff is absolutely delicious with rum in it.

I'm guessing it's more the lubricating effect of the water than anything else.

Phosphoric acid reacts with rust, but Coke doesn't have anywhere near the concentration you'll find in your average hardware store rust remover. Something like CLR isn't that much more expensive, and works a whole lot more quickly at full strength.

My brother thought he was doing me a favour bring me a 12 pack of pepsi.
I don't drink regular pepsi I drink diet so I just put the 12 pack in a cupboard and forgot about it.
A year and a half or two later I go into the cupboard and all over the bottom of the cupboard is this brown syrupy stuff.
I pull the old 12 pack out and the pepsi had started eating through the cans.
There's still a stain on the bottom of the cupboard where it kind of ate it's way into the wood.

Still drinking diet pepsi .

You can definitely clean coins and such with coke. I don't doubt you are right about it being the less effective than special purpose stuff though.

They make an Italian soda that we tried when in Atlanta at the Coke Pavilion there (it's not sold in the US, thank gawd).

it was absolutely vile. As my wife said, it tasted like someone had added seltzer to the contents of an ashtray and then canned/bottled it.

I had some when I went camping back at the end of Summer. Got it at either Safeway or Savemart. Can't say that I see it all that often.

I hope the don't kill of anything good.  Whatever they do, it won't noticably reduce the selection at the local soda pop store.

I advise against smelling large quantities of Hershey's chocolate. It smells like vomit. The subtle tang in Hershey's chocolate is caused by the milk stabilizing agent butyric acid. This is the same chemical that makes vomit smell like vomit.

I have a better chemist podcast link, but Fark doesn't like it. Anyway:

At some point, this is the end result of our brand of capitalism: monopolization and destruction of competition by any means necessary.
