The PPG has really gone down the shiatter since the ownership change. It used to be this weird conservative paper that also hated Republicans, but now it's some sort of weird GOP echo chamber, more than even some GOP rags.

Also its owner got drunk & went off on its staff last year

"Proven to be utterly false"?  I think it's bullshiat but I haven't seen much of anything about this story, in any direction, that should have the word 'proven' around it.

Totally Facebook's prerogative to say that something is bad journalism.  Wonder if they'll keep it up going forward, now that they've begun.  It's a tough job

Before that, for a long time, it was a pretty liberal paper that always backed Democrats. An ownership change farkied that up but good.

I don't think I'd have called it liberal but it was definitely not right wing, in part because it had to compete with Scaife's Tribune-Review.

The decades I'm talking about were before the Trib existed, some during the time that we still had an afternoon paper, the Pittsburgh Press.

It's in reference to a popular political cartoonist that newspaper fired because the cartoons were too critical of Trump in the eyes of the Trump-supporting editor that took over the paper.

Now the editor of the paper is biatching because Facebook is calling the Hunter Biden laptop story as BS (which it is).

My assumption is that the PPG, having decided to chuck all the rest of their market for the nutcase right, now feel obliged to cater to the last of their readership.

Trouble is, newspaper reading righties are a dying breed. In fact, righties who can read at all are.

I anticipate them going out of business in about ten years.

Facebook basically ran into an issue of trying to have its cake and eat it too and faceplanting as a result.

When it was 100% a user forum its legal obligation was to be hands off, since public forums do actually inherit a lot of first amendment protections, especially since it's not just speech but association you're dealing with.

When facebook decided to be a news service they took on the legal obligation to curate all content for at least factual truth.

Neither of these things is immediately a direct constitutional legal obligation, but both are real enough and having to do two contradictory things at once has not gone well for the idiots running the company thus far. Especially not since the leeway that new companies and especially tech companies always get expired with the election of government officials who can actually USE social media.

Agreed. People are mean on the internet. Doesn't really matter what the topic is or who you are, there will be people handing you shiat. It's the internet. Someone on Fark once mused this is what happens when all these Millennials and Zoomers hit the Internet without being properly toughened by Usenet and the vicious trolls who lived there. And, apparently now when Boomers attain a passing knowledge of it as well.

Jim_Callahan: Facebook basically ran into an issue of trying to have its cake and eat it too and faceplanting as a result.

Can I just point out that pretty much everything in your post is wrong?

When it was 100% a user forum its legal obligation was to be hands off, since public forums do actually inherit a lot of first amendment protections, especially since it's not just speech but association you're dealing with.

There is absolutely no legal obligation to be "hands off".  The Communications Decency Act provides protections if companies choose to be hands off (including if they do step in to moderate in some cases).  This isn't a first amendment issue at all, other than if the government were to step in (which it hasn't with regard to Facebook).

When facebook decided to be a news service they took on the legal obligation to curate all content for at least factual truth.

There is absolutely no legal obligation for a news service to be "factually true".  See: Alex Jones, Breitbart, etc.  They can get into civil trouble if they defame someone (with actual malice), but they can publish all the nonsense they want to.

Neither of these things is immediately a direct constitutional legal obligation, but both are real enough and having to do two contradictory things at once has not gone well for the idiots running the company thus far.

No, neither of them is a "real thing" in any legal sense, constitutional or otherwise - see above.

Especially not since the leeway that new companies and especially tech companies always get expired with the election of government officials who can actually USE social media.

Nothing expired with officials using social media.  It's getting more attention, sure, but the legalities haven't changed.  There is talk (on both sides) around updating the Communications Decency Act and the protections included within it, but nothing's happened yet.

Pittsburgh votes overwhelmingly liberal.

The main newspaper was the Pittsburgh Post Gazette which reflected that.

Then Scaife started up the hard-right Pittsburgh Tribune as anti Clinton competitor.

In 2018 the PPG was reduced to printing 3 editions a week and started moving to the right, eventually embracing Trumpism

I guess their market is now old folks in the conservative suburbs with a fondness for newsprint.

The Tribune-Review still exists, but it went back to being just a Greensburg-focused newspaper.

The PG is becoming a joke. I still travel to PA from time to time (not as much now because of COVID), but I remember when they were really pushing people to use the digital edition and they had these commercials with old people promoting the app and website and I thought to myself "Did they really think old people would adjust that easily?" That was right before they announced they weren't going to be a daily newspaper anymore.
