I want to put this in perspective.  The election was called on September 21st, 2020.  That's how long they had to prep for the vote and they are still doing a great job (during a pandemic).

So when you have 4 years to plan for an election in the US and you still have 4 hour line-ups, you are doing something very wrong and/or stupid.

Pennsylvania has until November 6th to finish counting mail-in ballots, a judge was even lenient on whether or not they are postmarked on the 3rd.

With the amount of voter suppression, foreign interference, Super PACs buying votes and the American governments concerted efforts to stop States from counting mail in ballots, can we still call America a democracy?

America is the oldest democracy, but that doesn't mean it's the best. We're proud of our kooky, archaic traditions when it comes to governance; we are descended from the British, after all.

Everyone I know either voted by mail or at the advance polls.  No lineups, in and out safely social distanced in five minutes or so.

Wrong, as in malicious, rather than foolish. The far-right doesn't get their way anymore when more people vote.

Are you aware of the origins of the word "democracy"?

Also, and much later - Poland had first democratically elected king in 1386. As democratically elected as first elections in US - any member of nobility who owned the land was free to take a part and vote.

We have a party that does everything it can to restrict all non-whites from voting.  It's completely intentional. You have good-faith actors, we have Republicans.

An (essentially) 2-party-system is really the absolute bottom rung of the ladder of democracy to begin with.

Winner-takes-all naturally gravitates towards that setup, and the end result is that there is very little incentive for either party to take much note of prevailing political opinions of the population at large. In a 10 party system, any fringe group that manages to scrape a few percentage of the vote may end up having an actual impact on policy.
It forces all the other parties to continuously re-evaluate their standpoints as well, and the chances that there is at least one party you agree with is significantly larger than it is under a 2-party system.

Ah, I see; you're using failed governments from hundreds if not thousands of years ago and somehow implying that those same nations exist today to prove me wrong.

If I told you that someone today who is 117 is the "world's oldest person" you have done the equivalent of replying "are you aware that some lady who died in 1997 was 122?" as if you were actually adding anything to the conversation. She's not alive today. Athens hasn't existed for 1000 years. Neither gets to claim the mantle of 'oldest' anything if they stopped doing that thing since. I bet you'll next argue that the Dutch East India company is the oldest corporation in the world despite it having ceased trading in 1800.

You've proved nothing and made a fool of yourself. I know, I know, joke's on me, welcome to Fark.

That being said, your chief executive was elected with a minority popular vote at least 2 out of 5 times this century.  I'm not sure what that is, but it doesn't sound like a democracy.

I voted early, there was a line up, but everyone was wearing masks and distancing correctly.  I was happy that I could vote progressive and probably expect a progressive representative (I come from AB).  A couple of days later I received a local paper wherein the local candidates said their piece and the Con came out and said that overwhelming evidence shows that global warming is caused by sun spots and the tilt of the earth and trees expiring CO2.  How did he think he was going to earn any votes here?

Nice. You didn't have to put any thought at all into it. I applaud that you, unlike most of the other electorate, didn't pretend that there was anything that could happen during the campaign that would change your vote in any way.

2020-10-24 12:26:16 PM
I voted on the first day of early voting. I was going to wait a day in case there were crowds on day 1, but I don't drive and the forecast called for rain starting the next day. I wanted to spend some time taking pictures of random stuff on the walk there & back and of the waterfall next to the polling location without getting soaked, so off I went. I was a little concerned when I got there and saw many more cars than usual in the parking lot ('usual' being 1-2), but it turned out they belonged to the (paid) poll workers, and there was only one other voter there at the time. I was in and out in maybe 2 minutes.
