Long as I don't have to buy the game again and I don't lose any of my builds.

Owners of the classic version will be forced to migrate

Are you suggesting Minecraft players miGRATE??

Meh. Given how goddamn common stolen accounts are under the current system, anything that increases security can't hurt.

Lots of whining from people who abhor Microsoft, but this is a long-needed change; Mojang's authentication systems haven't had a major update since 2015, and because that wasn't a mandatory migration, there are still accounts using the servers from 2009.

Microsoft has many problems, but stupidity isn't one of them. While the Java version of Minecraft hasn't been the dominant version for a few years, they're not going to do anything to chase off tens of millions of Java players, either. (Especially when most Minecraft content is still Java focused. Bedrock streamers/Youtubers/map makers/etc. do exist, but not with anything even close to the audience sizes of the Java side of things.)

When you decide to copy Facebook requiring an account to use an Oculus (knowing full well how everyone reacted to that move), does that make you a bigger asshole than Zuck?

Most of these people already have an Xbox account anyway I assume?

Except it's not really the same. Microsoft is actually trying to increase the security of the accounts. Facebook just wants to know what you're playing so they can monetize that information.

Came to say this. Mojangs account security system is awful.

Context matters. Microsoft isn't perfect but they aren't known for selling private info to the highest bidder. On the other hand that's Zuck's entire business model.

Migrated my account years ago, got a free copy of Bedrock Edition for doing so.  I'm assuming that promotion is long past. The migrations hasn't changed my Java experience one bit.

I assumed they made it mandatory long ago so my only real comment is: What took so long?

I bought Minecraft on Sunday November 7th 2010 when it was still on alpha.

I was promised lifetime updates and access to all new features.

I just never thought that HAVING to link my Mojang account to a Microsoft account would be one of the features.

But I do understand that $2Bn buys the right to add any and all features the buyer wants...

I don't. The X Box doesn't have any content I want that's not on PC, unlike the PlayStation.

My Microsoft account & my Minecraft account use the same msn email [I'm old]. I would think the switch should be seamless. Actually I should check, I think I already did this........

I've never heard of anyone complain about Minecraft security.  I have 2 accounts, one for myself and one for my daughter.  I hate MS so much I have the Windows profile localized rather than using a Microsoft account.  Needless to say, it's time to find a new game my daughter and I can enjoy together.

Make a MS account without using your personal information. It's easy to set up a throwaway Gmail account.

Or don't make excuses for Microsoft turning itself into a Google/Facebook clone and spying on users now that selling Windows upgrades to consumers is out?

If you're worried about that, then you make the throwaway account.

You think that other games that require an account to sign in, don't sell your information?

I don't even use my main email account for my Fark acccount.

It's cute that you think it's impossible to link information from all the user accounts accessing the internet from behind your home router.

You are an Apple fan boi, yes? You have to have an Apple account to do anything with software on your Mac, hell, even just to log in to your machine.

Mojang was sold to MS 6 years ago, and the developers decided to use MS auth because it already exists and is quite solid rather than create a new auth system from scratch. In fact I might argue that the MS 2FA system is one of the best available right now. What information do you think they would glean that they don't already have access to? You think Mojang's data doesn't belong to MS already? LOL.

As said in the Oculus Quest thread a few days ago, accounts for gaming is extremely common now. Every service has it's own methods of doing things, and NO service allows you to buy or (in most cases) play games without logging in to something at least once.

Well if the Microsoft change to Minecraft burns the bacon a bit there's always:

https://www.minetest.net/

It really isn't bad either for free with the different mods and game modes available to make it like Minecraft or far from it.

From what I gather, it was just a Notch above having your password sticky-noted to your monitor in a public cubicle.

Meh. I have to use a MS account to play Sod2 and SoT, so why do I care if I have to use it for Minecraft?

As long as it's still java edition and moddable, I don't care. The day they take my mods away is the day I switch to a cracked copy. Of course, I load through MultiMC now anyway.

What I wonder about are the mods that store info in your player profile. For instance, Thaumcraft did that. If you started progressing in Thaumcraft while logged in and then later played "offline", your research progress did not cross over. Several mods do a class- or skill-based progression that is stored similarly.
