Just because Crosby is a musician doesn't automatically mean that he listens to a lot of music by other artists or likes a wide range of musical genres. Over three decades and he never listened closely to Van Halen. That's not a huge surprise.

The funny thing is, from what I've heard, Eddie was much the same way. He probably had listened to as much of Crosby's music as Crosby had listened to Van Halen.

I always found it hilarious when artists criticize other artists. It's a left handed compliment. They're only admitting envy of what that artist is doing.
For someone like David Crosby to do this is pathetic.

Who cares?  He was speaking on his perception of his guitar playing.  It's not like he said he was glad he got cancer or something.

Save that talk for when Ted Nugent gets it.

I farking LOVE Van Halen, but I totally get this. I think his "Not for me" explanation sums it up. When you hung out with, and played  Hendrix, and then this kid comes around a few years later basically amping up / taking to the natural next level what Hendrix did...you can see why he would be dismissive. it's kind of how I always felt about guys like Yngwie Malmsteen. "Ya, you are crazy good...it's just not for me"

Crosby has terrible timing, however.

Well he is not wrong except there have been three people revolutionizing the guitar.  Hendrix, Frampton with that talking thingie, and El Mariachi in Desperado not only killing people but getting Salma Hayek naked.  Next to those three, Van Halen was good but meh.

Because he was answering a question.

FTA...

"A week after the VAN HALEN axeman's death, Crosby seemingly minimized Van Halen's talents, replying simply "Meh ...." when asked for his opinion of the Eddie's guitar-playing skills."

Because some rando on the internet asked his opinion. Crosby, not even knowing Eddie died, gave it. And it wasn't even that harsh. This has been much ado about nothing from the get-go.

I really wouldn't expect David Crosby to listen to Van Halen.. that's about 20 years outside of his teenage years and the music that would have influenced him.

When Crosby passes, a lot of younger musicians will also be all "meh".  But no one will care.  Replace "Crosby" with just about any other musician over the age of 70, and, with very little exception, the point still stands.

But he wasn't saying meh to his death. Crosby wasn't aware that EVH had died. He was saying meh to his thoughts on EVH's music.

Constructive criticism is fine. What Crosby did came off as childish and bitter. Saying this right after EVH died? Publicly? So the family can see it on the news..?
He thinks he's defending the legacy of Jimi Hendrix. 'Nobody will ever be better than Jimi Hendrix' mentality. Silly and trivial. Jimi Hendrix is in his own class. No one will ever touch what he did. Especially for that time in music history.

Unless people can create a better version of what they're criticizing, they should stfu. It doesn't make their work look any better.

The Jeff Beck thing was frustrating. He could play, probably the best Yardbird and I'm a HUGE Zeppelin fan
But other than Bolero and Freeway Jam it's hard to find something memorable outside some Rod Stewart word but that was surpassed by Jimmy in Zeppelin.  How could he not get into another band?

Beck, Bogert & Appice had some good tunes, but yeah, not seeing Jeff Beck go further was frustrating. Some people wondered why he covered Stevie Wonder's Superstition - he played on that song for Stevie.
I remember him having to cancel a tour once, because he screwed up some fingers working on his first love, cars. He's the only guitarist who I couldn't take my eyes off his hands when seeing him in concert.

Wired, Blow By Blow and There and Back showcase some awesome playing but Beck is only (dubiously in my opinion) credited as a co-writer on like 5 or 6 songs. Which tells me he can't even compose a guitar forward instrumental. I kinda wonder if he isn't some kind of idiot savant. I saw him smoke Page and Clapton on the same stage in SF, it's inexplicable.

For me, it was Carlos Santana. From the first note to the last I could not look away from his guitar and hands. He made that guitar laugh, cry, scream and whisper. Watching him play from six feet away was mesmerizing!
