Astonishing. Nouveau riche, wealth insulated and isolated narcissist sociopaths can be manipulated! Someone alert the Russians, Chinese, Iranians, Israelis and Saudis. Maybe they can do something useful with these kind of insights.

It's almost as if someone has realized that strife and conspiracy nutters post more than folks with decent jobs and who are generally happy with life. Man, can you imagine the catastrophe to FB if everyone was working, people didn't have to complain about their rights being violated, and they weren't terrified of the future?

HAVEN'T THOUGH ABOUT THAT, NOW HAVE YOU, LIBS? ZUCKERBERG IS JUST TRYING TO FEED HIS FAMILY! YOUR STRIFE IS HIS BREAD AND BUTTER, SO SERVE IT UP, HOT AND FAST!

Now they've all migrated to Instagram (which Facebook has bought).

Surprised they haven't tried buying out TikTok in all honesty.

A-list conservative commentators and leaders did a lot of talking and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg did a lot of listening at an unusual meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

Remember right before FB went public how Zuck ran far away from the US? I think maybe he had something to hide, and the conservatives took the opportunity to bend him to their will...

Or, that Zuck is just a complete asshole, and that explains a lot too.

At one point Facebook was exclusive.  You needed a .edu email address to sign up, meaning that if you were on FB in the first few years it was virtually nothing but your college classmates.  No Grandma Betty sharing minion memes and chain-letter photos captioned with "I bet 99% of people will scroll past without praying for this handicapped girl who also has cancer", no idiot Uncle Jeff parroting pointlessly cruel right-wing talking points at every opportunity, none of your townie dipshiat high school classmates who've never left your hometown and can't understand why anyone would want to.

Totally different. Not necessarily better, of course, but very, very different.

My reason was more petty. The messenger function was on the same app as the main Facebook app. Then suddenly they decided that the messenger needs to be a separate app and that the app needs to take a huge chunk of my phone's memory. I even had a friend keep pressuring me to download the app because she wanted to be able to message me. That started the path towards me being sour about Facebook.

The fact that I would post non-controversial stuff and get absolutely no response didn't help either. No point in talking to a vaccum.

Calling people, having a meal or drink with them, or having fun together beats all those options.  Facebook is the fast food of social interaction.  Leaving it has made me happier and my relationships stronger.

I remember it in real time. There used to be a useless headline feed that was filled with actual fake news, FB made a change, Infowars and Breitbart complained loudly, and a couple weeks later the headline feed was back to being whackadoo. Eventually Facebook deleted the feature completely.

"Did Facebook manipulate its algorithm to reduce article shares from The Nation?" "No."

"Did Facebook manipulate its algorithm to reduce article shares from The Atlantic?" "No."

Very true.  Maybe this is just a reflection of how I used it back in the day, but I always saw FB as an accessory to interactions and relationships that I conducted primarily in meatspace.  The concept of a "Facebook Friend," where your interactions therewith began and ended on that site, wasn't yet a thing for me.

In retrospect, it was never going to stay like that; there was and is too much money to be made in roping in as many people as humanly possible. And I hate to say it because it sounds elitist as all hell, but the stone cold truth about FB is that the minute they opened it up to that wider world, it went to shiat with a quickness.

The part that confuses me is "scary."  Why the fark does everyone lose their shiat just because something new comes down the road?  A lot of shiat has changed since I was even halfway close to "Hello Fellow Kids!" age.  Some of it is indeed scary - the rise of the right wing assholes etc.  Most of it it?  Either neutral or actually cool.  FFS at least wait 10 minutes and see if X thing really is something to worry about, or if it's just weird.  Weird isn't scary, people - it's just weird to you - and so the fark what.  Ain't hurting anything who cares?

2020-10-22 12:36:29 PM
Hardly surprising. Right-wingers are like a dog with a bone. They can't let anything go. Of course, FB panders to them.

The rest of us will make our argument, then say, "You are an idiot. I'm out of here."
