Max $10K fine? So, everything over that is profit?

Wow, no mention of restitution?  That's some mighty fine moral hazard we're encouraging here.

The IRS is one organization that needs to be beefed the hell up.  If we actually collected all the taxes that companies owed, we probably wouldn't have a deficit right now.

CSB - one of my uncles (married to my dad's youngest sister) did something like this years ago. There was no jail time involved but I'm pretty sure they spent years paying back the taxes and some sort of fine. I think their Social Security was even garnished when they started receiving it.

I'm guessing that this guy has to pay the taxes.

The IRS is the one gov't entity that reduces the deficit the more it's funded

It sounds like some sort of grounds-keeping or property management service.  In Bedford, PA.  It's quite possible that the total value of the tax fraud was less than $10k.

Even assuming there is full restitution, the light penalty might make the crime a pretty rational gamble. If you get caught and convicted like this guy, you wind up behind, but surely some never get caught and the potential gain is many times the worst-case loss.

I would never consider a 6 month jail sentence to be light.  Maybe for a violent crime, but not something like this

/The IRS is actually pretty reasonable if you owe them money and make an effort to pay it back.

Need input from those in the know. The commercials you see for these companies that can clear up your IRS debt, are they legit? Seems you have to owe more than 10k. Then they settle it for 2 or 3k. How much do they charge?
