(USA Today)   Fact-checking a claim that the US is living "under minority rule" as a president who lost the popular vote by 3 million is nominating a justice that will be confirmed by "majority" senators representing 15 million fewer people than the minority. True   (usatoday.com) divider line

Republicans: People who looked on apartheid and saw the system they wanted to bring to America.

'A president who lost the popular vote by 3 MILLION has nominated a full THIRD OF THE SUPREME COURT'

That's true.

In 2016, Hillary Clinton bested Donald Trump by exactly 2,865,075 votes, according to CNN."

...

'Amy Coney Barrett will be confirmed by a Senate majority that represents 15 MILLION FEWER PEOPLE than the minority party'

That's essentially true.

Republicans in the Senate represent 14.3 million fewer Americans than Senate Democrats.

----------

What terrible fact-checking!

The 'Betches Sup' twitter post is claiming that Donald Trump lost the popular vote by 3 million, whereas he only lost it by 2,865,075, and that senate Republicans represent 15 million fewer Americans than Democrats when they only represent 14.3 million less.

Are you saying that 134,925 votes don't matter? Should we let them get away with conjuring up 700,000 Americans out of thin air to prove a point?

Given that this is a liberal source, the rules of fact-checking say that both of these claims are roundly false, since they deliberately inflate numbers to prove a point. It's very important here to focus on semantics instead of actually engaging with the fact that a shrinking minority of voters are wielding disproportionate power and taking measures to entrench that powers and their numbers continue to decline.

For shame, USA Today.

True, but a minor clarification: we're all being ruled by the 1%. Don't kid yourself otherwise.

A president who received 3 million fewer votes than their competitor appoints 1/3 of the Supreme Court, which is confirmed by Senators representing 14.3 million fewer people than the minority party.

Sounds like the system works, folks.

That's why I have no problem if judges are added to the SC.

In fact, we should demand it if the Dems win.

That will get a lot easier once the DOJ ramps up the investigations into the GOP's treason.

They can't vote on legislation from prison.

Yeah.  It's like comparing trump voters to nazis, which isn't true, because nazis were competent and fairly intelligent.

well, while there are no Jedi, we still have constitutional rights that enable us to go after and dethrone the treasonous bastards if we have to.

Remember, according to Rethuglicans led my #MoscowMitch: "POWER IS THE ONLY LAW!"

Remember that well.

Get the votes to take back the Senate.

Then dilute their power. Remember, it's legal and peachy keen to do such a thing. They did it to Evers and Kaul on the state level in Wisconsin after the last election. Tell the Rethuglicans you're going to take away that ebil soshulizm they hate with so much vitriol. Then cancel their government checks. Then cancel their government backed farm loans. Stop buying excess produce at market value, because no business guru would ever do something so foolish as to overpay.

Don't forget to add a few new states to dilute the small state power, throwing a monkey wrench into the GOP playbook. When your Rethuglican family / friends / neighbors whine, remind them: POWER IS THE ONLY LAW! ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES!

We did it on purpose because the slavery states demanded disproportionate power, or they wouldn't join the union. They said they feared "the tyranny of the majority."

North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana combined have a smaller population than Los Angeles. Let's combine them into one state and lose 5-6 republican senators.

Why is it the same people who refuse to listen to the majority when it comes to things like trans rights are always complaining about the senate representing a minority of this country. Do you want control by majority or not?

Article 4 and 5 says you can't do that without their consent.   And Article 5 says this provision can't be amended.

Of course, nothing says you can't pass an an amendment amending the non amendable provision and then doing it anyway

American has always been under minority rule.  A tiny minority of super wealthy ruled over millions of slaves is an example most people are aware of.  Less well known is the fact that all but a tiny minority was disenfranchised when it came to the vote.   Women were not allowed to vote.   Native Americans were not citizens.  The only people allowed to vote were white males of independent means.  In other words, the rich.  Most white males were disenfranchised when this country was founded.   So yeah, American has always been about minority rule...rule by the super wealthy.

Constitutional Originalism is merely a dog whistle for white supremacy and protections for the wealthy.
We were founded on the principle that wealth is power and the little people can be bought and sold, forced into indentured servitude, and can't vote or have a right to an education.  In the first election only 6% of Americans citizens could vote, never mind the large and growing numbers of African slaves and others ineligible for citizenship even though they were born here.
Justice Cancer wants to take us back to that.

This country is living under minority rule now because over the past 20-30 years that minority voted, and did so CONSISTENTLY. Trump* and probable justice Handmaid are the culmination of decades of hard work and perseverance by that minority at all levels from dog catcher to the Oval Office while the majority confidently sat on their asses and watched.

This year/presidential term/nightmare proves that it's not just enough to have the numbers. Those numbers need to be used to have any effect.

Look up the REDMAP program. In 2011 the GOP spent months huddled in little rooms across the country. They drew gerrymandered maps that gave them a structural majority in most states. When they boast about winning elections, they mean they stole those elections. The 2016 election for president was stolen.

It's not enough to have the numbers, you need balanced districts. Also fair elections, but that's another topic.

First thing Democrats need in 2021 is election reform. No more machines. No more gerrymandering.

Russell_Secord: It's not enough to have the numbers, you need balanced districts.

And again, it's those numbers that let republicans win enough elections so that they had the power to gerrymander the districts. They could not do that if they were not in control of the apparatus that does the districting. It's STILL about the numbers and always will be.

This is also a reason why every election is important. Every. Single. One. It's in the off-year elections that a whole lot of representatives to state houses and legislatures are elected... you know, the people who "huddle together in little rooms" and gerrymander maps. If they weren't in office and in power they couldn't gerrymander jack shat. That could have been prevented by voting.

Could have been, but wasn't.

South Africa got that idea from the US. If anything it's just "making America great again."
